They entered contests sponsored by the Iiions Club, the Knights of Pythias, the Toast- masters, and thc American Legion. Under the able direction ot' Leo Gassman, niany of the contestants went on to more than one victory. The Senior Play, Pure As the Driven Snow , proved quite an entertaining Il19l0dI'?1II1ii, and the one act play, t'When Slialiespeare's Ladies Meet , proved to be another asset added to the list. of Senior initiative. The Senior Breakfast was another activity which brought all Seniors together for the last time with the exception of Bacca- laureate and Graduation. , li -f Q, V' l fel A , if 77,5 U 1 mf Donna Lucy Doyle Dewain Clem Ilatridge Barbara Jeanne Godwin f. ,..- ....,,,,,,,,, X i .. .... ,,,,, r 1.-my-1. .nm-um: ........ .1-puma Final E clition HN Left to right: Diane Elsinger t1,2b, Donna Doyle tl D, Roger Giridings t2t, Monte Green tt, 21, Grace Layne t1,2t, Monica Peterson t2t, Arthur Sloan tli, in ahsentia. s ig- We Arthur Sloan Monte Green st Semester President The Seniors liznl an very sin-eessinl ,vezur nntler tlie grnitlnnee ol' Qtlisr tiihson, Senior xponsor. :intl Presitlents .Xrtlinr Sionn :intl Monte tlreen. Coaches Mr. Harritt and Mr. Southstone Varsity Coaches FOOTBALL Vista-0 Escondido-24 An unexperieneed Vista eleven had trouble getting going in the first game of the '51 season and looked a little shaggy by dropping their opener to a bigger and better Cougar squad. Vista-7 Capistrano-45 Harley Lobo and his Capistrano teammates made it a field day in scoring in every quarter to roll over the Panthers who, however, showed signs of improvement and managed to put together an offensive punch early in the first half. Vista-7 Tustin-6 The Panthers shook their losing streak in this game and showed their winning class in dumping Tustin 7-6. Contrary to the previous two games, the Panthers defensive team had no trouble in stopping Tustin. Vista-26 Fallbrook-12 Vista made it four straight over the Warriors in the first league game of the season. The Panthers had a little trouble in getting an offense going and mastered the game in every quarter but the second. Vista-13 A. 8: N. Academy-0 Vista went into their second league game underdogs for the fifth time, but proved their ability to do the unexpected in shutting out A.N.A., 13 to 0. Vista's team looked good on offense and blocked like professionals to open gaping holes for the Panther backs. Vista-31 Brown-13 The Panthers had little trouble in finishing their league season undefeated by trouncing Brown, 31-13. Vista showed all that they meant business by scoring twice in the first five plays and three times in the first quarter. They used the rest of the game to sharpen up their attack for the Oceanside game. Vista-20 Oceanside-20 The Panthers played their best game of the season in winning a moral victory from the Pirates. Although the score showed a 20-20 deadlock, the Panthers felt it was their game. They mastered the battle in all but the third quarter and scored the first two times they got the ball. Then, with their backs against the wall and trailing 20-13, the Panthers did it again by scoring once and having the ball on the 13-yard line when the gun went off to end the game. Vista-19 San Dieguito-21 Vista played the Mustangs even ball, but a couple of bad breaks in the fourth quarter and a couple of missed conversions spelled defeat for the Panthers. The Homecoming crowd of 3000 saw the Panthers fight back from the short end of a 14-0 score at the half to out play the Mustangs in the second half. Vista-0 Coronado-32 CS.C.I.F. Playoffsl Vista ran into too much in the Islanders from Coronado and although these game guys from Pantherville played their hearts out, the Coronado team outplayed Vista and won handily, 32-0. whit, Ed Myers CLE? V. enjoyed a very successful season, pulling almost the reverse of the Varsity Squad. They won their first two games, taking the opener from Capistrano 14 to 0 and copping their second tilt 13 to 6 from Tustin. In the league opener the J. V.'s had to settle for a scoreless tie with Fallbrook. Undaunted, they traveled to A. N. A. and swamped the Cadets, 15 to 7. Next up for the undefeated Panther junior crew were the Brown Cadets. They con- tinued in the win column, topping Brown 21 to 6. Here the I'antl1er's luck ran out. Ocean- side dealt our rugged -l. V. a merciless drubbing 20 to 7. The San Dieguito J, V. followed the next week by taking our luckless J. V. into camp 12 to 6 in a hard-fought battle that made both teams play heads up ball for all foul' quarters. The J. V. squad ended up with a -I win, 2 loss, 1 tie record. Vista 14 Capistrano 0 Vista 13 Tustin 6 Vista 0 Fallbrook 0 Vista 15 A, N. Next up for the Panthers was the Kiwanis tournament where the Panthers split even in the four games to cop the limited Division Consolation trophy. The Panthers opened up the year '52 by dropping a three pointer to Escondido, 41-38. They dumped Fallbrook the same week, 48-47. Vista went into their first league game against the A. N, A. bearing the brunt of a four win, six loss record. The Panthers dropped another three pointer as the Cadets staved off a last quarter rally to hand the Panthers their first league defeat. In an overtime tilt against Brown, Vista won 54-50 after dropping another league tilt to Ramona 39-47. Julian dealt Vista their third league loss, 69-42, but Vista ended up the league season by dumping Fallbrook 46-40. The Panthers ended up the season with 9 wins and 14 losses. B Basketball The Panther Junior cage 5 had a rather disastrous season of war, winning but six and losing l2 for a .333 percentage. ln league play they also had a little trouble, dropping all five contests by close scores. The J. V. was as good a floor team as anyone they played but their trouble was their inability to score. They couldn't seem to find the range and this was their trouble all year. They showed their ability to Win the Ramona B Tourney by eopping two wins to bring the consolation trophy home to Vista. C Basketball The Panther t'C's had a very successful season tallying in the win column eight times against three setbacks. They proceeded a good defensive club and a good ball handling club which was sufficient enough to turn back most. clubs. They turned in a 4-1 league record to take second place. Another highlight of the HC season was the two victories taken in the Brown Tournament to bring home the consolation trophy. D Basketball The mighty midgets upheld Vistas honor by ranking second along with the C's. The lYs sporting a. 4-l record in league play bested almost all they faced to chalk up second place for Vista. They battled .500 for the season, winning four and losing four, A very good record for a first. season club. Field Evenfs Left to right: Dick Tanaka, Bob Bedford, Arthur Sloan, Charles Crafts. BASEBALL The Vista horsehide nine had a little trouble getting started this year and were only able to collect four wins while losing six times. This record isn't as bad as it sounds though, as the Panthers dropped three games by one run, one by two, and the other by three runs. Two league losses, to Fallbrook, 5-6, and A.N.A., 1-3, put Vista third in league stand- ings. Vista 's failure to come through in the clutches with men on base and their shaky defense told the tale of this year 's squad. In the second round the Panthers will be a little sharper and should take some of thc matches they dropped by close scores. The netters took Ramona for their only win, then dropped matches to Brown, Fallbrook, and A.N.A, by close scores. Quite a number of the squad are freshmen and sophomores and will be a, big help next year when Vista invades the Metro League in tennis.
