Leaf through these pages and relive with us some of the happiest days of our lives. Here in this our Yea'r Book you will see us in every phase of school activity: at our social functions, in our physical education programs, in the class rooms attaining scholastic knowl- edge and at our spiritual endeavors. You will see that we had the mind for studyp the mind and heart for prayerp and the mind, heart and will for action. At the thought of all the blessings that were ours for four glorious years, gratitude wells up in our hearts for those who made it possible for us to attend a school that educates the body, the mind and the soul. First our deepest, sincerest thanks go to our dear parents who made every sacrifice to keep us here. Then to those who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives to instruct others unto justice-our Priests and Sisters. dmini tration We have memories of four glorious years under the guidance of our Priests and Sisters of Saint Dominic at Visitation where we learned the principles which govern the lives of those who are seek- ers of life ever lasting! Careers Unlimited is the slogan of dynamic Detroit-for, this City has much to offer in the line of work which yields, not only a good living, but also keen enjoyment of the job, The material in the Guidance Room will give the students a look at the futureg it will help them to decide their W vocations, and point the way to an occupation. Making a living is a iob that no one can escape -but, what iob? That is the question. With the help of their advisers, the Priests and Sisters, the students soon find out what they wish to do. There are also Careers Unlimited in the Church. Teaching, nursing, doing social service, taking care of the aged, Cathectical work, caring for orphans, missionary work in fields afar-these are only a few of the careers in the Master's Vineyard. High School Faculty At A Teachers' Meeting H Sister Brigetta, principal, is presiding at a Faculty meeting. Seated to the right of the Principal is Sister Edwardine, followed by Sister Margaret Joan, Sister Alberta, Sister Ann Thomas, Sister Catherine Francis, and Sister Clare Olivia. On the other side, from the top downward are: Sister Reparata fassistant principall, Sister Mary Winifred, Sister Jean Loretto, Sister Marie Harold, Sister Clare Charles, and Sister Agnes Charles. Pope Pius Xl, said in his Encyclical on the Chris- tian Education of Youth. Perfect schools are the re- sult not so much of good methods as of good teachers, teachers who are thoroughly prepared and well grounded in the, matter they have to teach, who possess the intellectual and moral qualifications required by their important office, who cherish a pure and holy love for the youths confided to them, because they love Jesus Christ and His Church. . The Dominican Order is especially dedicated to Preaching and Teaching and has carried on this work in the Church for over seven hundred years. The Sisters of Saint Dominic at Visitation School are a part of this grand and glorious Order of PREACH- ERS AND TEACHERS. Principal, Sister Brigetta The guiding principles observed in formulating the philosophy of Visitation High School are threefold, namely: existence of God, dignity and worth of the individual, man's place in society. In accord with these basic truths the function of Visitation High School is to prepare the student for what he must do here below in order to attain the sublime end for which he was created. The means of developing the principles of philosophy are through the educational program which aims: l. to organize all knowledge and information in proper perspective so that students may know and love God, the First Cause and Last End of of all creation, may know and love Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of mankindg and may know and love the Church which He has founded. 2. to integrate these principles into their lives so that habitual discipline of will and suitable Catholic attitudes of mind will result. 3. to develop such an appreciation of virtuous conduct as will cause students consistently to choose the good because it is the will of God. 4. to provide opportunities that will inspire students wih a desire to advance intellectually and to grow culturally and socially. an ap reciation of the beauty of God as re- 51 to stimulate and encourage in each student flecte in human character, in nature, and in the creative works of man. 6. to cultivate in boys and girls a desire to know and a determination to follow their God-given vocations. to impart a sincere veneration for the dignity of tge family and the sanctity of the marriage bon . to infuse a respect for Divinely appointed authority as inherent in our democratic govern- ment and our American way of life. to provide exceptional opportunities in a well rounded physical education program that pro- motes healthful, wholesome recreational op- portunities. to develop desirable attitudes, social and moral, worthy ideals and intelligent participa- tion in society. to provide for good use of leisure time by developing desirable leisure habits, encourage- ment in the development of the habit of reading and enioying books and periodicals of good quality and real value. to provide opportunities for leadership and to afford each student an opportunity to train for life in a democratic social state. to encourage active participation in matters of community and civic interest. to help each student to adapt himself socially, to teach the maxims of good social usage, and to develop poise, confidence, and a wholesome self-assurance. to provide guidance, both personal and voca- tional from the priests of the parish, from homeroom teachers acting as individual ad- visors who work in cooperation with the help of parents and principal. if sv Q aww: 4 'I 'fa , if V T ' ,, - R 3 s Q ws Tv L f x of g a. , , vs ,- v ' , f 4 '1 i 4' Q . Under his direction and under the direction of our Moderator, Sister Winifred, this organization had the opportunity of providing a program which fostered spiritual growth, self realization, hu- man relationships, economic efficiency, and civic re- sponsibility. The objectives of this organization were in ac- cordance with the view of the Church on Christian Education, that is, man is an intellectual, moral being living in this world with other human beings for the purpose of working out his soul's salvation and returning to the God Who created him. They are Barbara Beerkle, p r e s i cl e n t, Patricia Reno, Antonia Robb, Eileen Luczyk, Patricia Rodeng Paula Woodward, and Barbara Johnson. The National Honor Society was founded to ele- vate standards of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Thus the Society raises the standards ot Secondary Schools and sets a pace for ambitious students. Each school follows the Constitution of the Society, added to which is the Supplement Constitu- tion of each individual school. Since service to the school and to others is a form of Charity and since character has to do with morals, the Society renders an invaluable spiritual service to any school which has the National Honor Society in action, Boys' Civic Squad are Ready for il Rest at End of Hay YI:- l Pictured here, is the boys' section of the Starting at the top lgoing from left to rightl Civic Bureau. They began their day's work immediately after Mass in the morning by keeping order in the halls as the students arrived at their classrooms. Between all classes, during the day, they could be seen at their posts throughout the school. Their orange badges of authority were a familiar sight to the students. Working in coniunction with the boys' section of the committee, change ot class vvas always carried on in an orderly and efficient manner. 125' '., i if A--ff-1 V-V 5 ' Q. 1 ' 'xi I ,-:::.- f ' Q ,- if W D .r, . It was a day that was long pre- pared for and a day for which a goal had been set in the minds of four senior history students. For the first time two parochial schools had the opportunity to appear on Quiz Em. Visitation's team fought during that tense half hour with the determined St. Alphonsus students. When the quiz ended, the score board read: Visitation 600 St. Alphonsus 525. The panelists Peter O' Brien, Barbara Beerkle, Antonia Robb, and Edward Spehar brought home a victory and along with it a 21-inch television set. William Jakeway, in the upper left of the picture was an alternate who did his share in the con- TeST. During the intermission the panelists exchanged sides with a celebrity, Harvey Barcus. Visitation students and St. Alphonsus students fired questions at him concerning the outcome of the future Soup Bowl Game. indeed, this was an exciting day and wonderful experience for the winners. lt will never be forgotten. Young Home Makers Seriously At Work P To the left, Dorothy Lasitis is carefully studying her pattern. Garment makers at the machines are: Sylvia Warunek, Mary Frances Unger, Anne Rudel, Judith Knecht, and Elaine Millington. The work of this group will be on exhibition at the annual Fashion Show which is usually held sometime in April or May. Every spring the clothing classes present a fashion show, This year's show, Travel Treasures, featured garments that could carry a girl through any vacation and look well anywhere. Play clothes were modeled by Paula Woodward, Constance Kuzma, Catherine Rohrig and Catherine's little sister. Clothes that travel, included a blue gabardine coat with red and white candy striped lining, made and modeled by Noreen McMonagle, a white print sheath dress, with matching beige coat, by Sally Taylor, and a brown linen dress, with matching lined jacket, by Dolores Kocenda. Also included in the group of traveling clothes were dresses, skirts, iackets and blouses by Mary Golden, Pauline Vogel, Linda Wilson, Mary Ann Zemaitis, Barbara McNamara, Diane Mc- Pherson, Virginia Livernois, Sharon MacAuley, Janet Bodak, Nancy McNamara, Patricia Blan- chard, Patricia Moore, Karen Krabach, Mary Louise Nashar, Joanne Mottin, Elaine Yondura Carol George, and by Ann Rudel. Ready for an evening, or daytime of fun, in flattering feminine fashions, were modeled by Virginia Osdras, Mary Rowiewicz, Mary Frances Unger, Sylvia Warunek, Colleen Brady, Elaine Millington, Lottie Khoury, Dorothy Lasitis, Mary Ann McKay, Loretta Young, Patricia Kuclo, Jo- anne Ziemba, Anita Piirala, Toni Robb, Barbara Johnson, Carol Prager, Judy Knecht, and Evelyn Chytry. This group featured new fabrics and weaves. Many new fashion trends and colors were evident. A delightful way to begin or end any day were shown in dusters and kimonas by Joanne Steele, Elizabeth Kattula and Connie Kuzma. These garments showed us that clothes can be fashionable as well as modest. Using the latest in fabrics, colors and styles, the students have constructed garments which marked them as young Christian ladies of good taste and culture. 65 Drafting Class Show Ulf Their kills Visitation School provides a well-rounded two year course in drafting, the language of our Industrial Detroit. During the first two semesters the young draftsmen are given the guidance and educational values of mechan- ical Drawing and they learn to express their own ideashby means of conventional symbols. In the first year individual differences are discovered and opportu- nities given for advancement in sketching, instrument lobs, lettering, reading of the slide rule, and skills in the use of materials and instruments as the students progress with the working drawings. Even former students who do not become mechanical draftsmen often return to tell us that the skills, habits, and abilities mastered at school have been transferable and useful in their own occupations. The self discipline that co-mes through the concentration of mind and hand to do a creditable piece of work in a specific time is of lasting value long after the draftsmen leave Visitation High School. Many boys develop a sense of appreciation for the work of the draftsmen in the first year and wish to continue in the field. The subiect of Pattern Develop- ment, Pictorial, Machine, and Architectural Drawing are offered to them in the third and fourth semesters. The boys soon learn that emphasis is placed on quality and thorough understanding rather than upon the quantity of work finished. Pictured here are The Senior boys in the Drafting class. At the lower left, Dale Scott and Leonard Rosiewicz are- comparing basic models, above them are David Moore, Lawerence Korzecke and John Burke, showing the application of des i g n to architecture. In the far- ther right hand corner, Roger Carter and James Seleski are working on a car design, in the back at the tables are Wendel Hall, Mark Shallow, and Michael Duffy, seat- ed in the foreground from left to right are Jamal Esshaki, Raymond Vincent, Gary Naiarian, Duane Murphy and Michael Franz. 1'll'llfnfxlz-- --gnurtliixtzg 2255333355 ,gg g Y I I ' - Y A' ' A I' Lv ' r ' .1 ' -' W! They are Mr. J. Perticone, left, Mr. W. Raikovich across from him with John Marnon at his elbow. At the end is Father Kuntz, the Priest in charge of the Physical Education Department at Visi. A very important personage in this program who does not happen to be photographed here is Father Markey, the Priest who had a dream which really came true. Visitation's Social and Recreational Center is an unique project in Catholic Education, and also a valuable contribution to the Archdiocese. An in- tegrated program of mental, moral, and physical education is possible here because of the wonder- ful facilities, and because of the close cooperation of the Sisters and the Center Personnel. Every boy and girl in Visitation School is given an excellent opportunity to learn practical truths and to have a good time in a well balanced program at the Cen- ter. The large crowds of students found there every day attest to the wisdom and popularity of the proiect. And the well-adiusted successful lives of these students will be a fitting justification of a daring experiment. A competent staff of fifteen well qualified men and women carry on the stupendous program of physical education, leisure time recreation and so- cial activities, along with the usual varsity sports for our grade and our high school. Under the able direction and leadership of Mr. Wm. Raikovich and Mr. Justine Perticone a successful program is plan- ned and carried out by the staff in close cooperation with the School. Every day the Center is a bee-hive of activity with meetings, games, practice sessions, dances, swimming, bowling, ping-pong, and checker con- tests going on simultaneously. The excited chatter of many voices indicates the happiness that is found in the congenial surroundings of the Center. We certainly have here a great treasure that we are happy to enioy and to share with others. 1 'BQ ,I 4. P ' ' fl Gm YH My J f . 1.
