Ellison Choncellor For those who are uncertain of Union's history and growth, a visit to Dr. Elli- son's office will prove rewarding. He is showered with tokens of appreci- ation for his unending generosity and interest in people. Several Universities have buildings named for him. A hospi- tal in Africa also bears his name. The author of numerous books, and an One of Union's greatest assets is unde- niably Dr. John Malcus Ellison. His contributions to this University as well as to other religious and educational institutions the world over, impels us to stand in awe. As a young man, Dr. Ellison overcame many difficulties in his attempts to be admitted to Union. Once admitted, he found himself struggling successfully and performing above average at a University that had almost turned him away. Years later, he served as the first black president of Virginia Union, a term that lasted fourteen years. During this time, Dr. Ellison's progressive innova- tions were numerous as he competently prepared for a future of which we are now a part. Dr. Ellison currently serves as chancel- lor and has his office on the first floor of the building that bears his name. An incredibly erudite man, Dr. Ellison has an eloquent voice and charming mannerisms which captivate an audi- encefs attention. The students and fac- ulty alike venerate and seek the advice of this considerate friend and adviser who is never too busy to listen. A visit to his office, whether it be to talk to him or discuss weighty prob- lems, will result in the warmest conver- sation one can encounter, as well as the added opportunity to absorb some of the abundance of knowledge and wis- dom this man has to share. A friend to all students Dr. Ellison enriches our lives with a feeling of love and understanding. Y ff . ig - ' 911-9.X. 41 ,1 -T ara' N 1-fin t f 4 sa . Helping him to fulfill his life, is his lovely wife Elizabeth, who manages to share her husband's attributes as well as to find time to ,share her own abili- ties in music with the community. Because of what Dr. Ellison is, what he has done, and what he continues to do to make life more fulfilling for all with whom he comes in contact, the year- book staff, with love and respect, dedi- cate the 1978 Panther to Dr. John Mal- cus Ellison. The motto is: l'Friendship is essential to the soul. Omegas live under the auspices of four cardinal principles which are, Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift together with one principal desire, which is the preservation of Black Womanhood. As with any organization which is encompassed with a society which fluctuates between many technological, spiritual, moral, and physical advances and regressions, Omegas must grow mentally and physi- cally to maintain equilibrium with the general campus family. Their endeav- ors are to hopefully omit the stoic men- tality of many of their peers, which seems to pervade the minds of students. Although they too are victims of this mental state, they feel it is the role of the Fraternities and Sororities to pro- ject a scholarly mature and intellectual model for the general campus family to follow. The club is well-known for its fine singing during special occa- sions and for its farewell party at the end of each school year when German delicacies are being sampled by the members. In 1973 the Club sent six members to Germany and Switzerland and visited Cologne, Mainz, Meersburg on Lake Constance, Constance, Kreuzlingen in Switzerland, Oberammergau. Roth- enburg, and Frankfurt. Slide and film lectures by guests from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are greatly enjoyed by all members. In the fall of 1976 the club visited Bush Gardens and in the spring of 1977 a German restaurant in the Richmond area was visited. Student Government Associoton Dovid Rogers, President Attempting to govern any body of indi- viduals is a great task indeed. A hand- ful of capable students took this chal- lenge against numerous adverse forces, namely the apathy of the students, the administration, a strict budget, and the usual calamities that are inherent in any organization. The Student Government Association is definitely not just another organiza- tion. The SGA serves as a powerful go- between and negotiator for the stu- dents. They with the help of concerned students and members of the adminis- Stephanie Nopper - Vice-president Non Thompson - Recording Secretory Brendo Cople - Treosurer tration, especially the Student Union Committee, smoothed out the lumps and stubbles that at times, only a hand- ful of individuals can do. The SGA has a long way to go before becoming that well-organized voice and tool of the students, but such a change will never occur without the interest and cooperation of the stu- dents and administration. The SGA officers are not to be seen as scapegoats for disenchanted students but as a source for action in imp menting the wishes and rights of 1 students. Until we as students real the true purpose of the SGA and 1 those strengths to work, we will cc tinue to point fingers of blame at pi ple that we put in office. Such actior futile as you can see. We must not forget that we are als: part of the SGA, not only during p ties and dances but during disagr ments, elections, meetings, and a other activity on this campus. -i. i I it .t. 4. Although labeled student media center, this department is crucial to both faculty and student relations, as well as a needed tool to reach into the surrounding communi- ties. Student Communications includes all areas of the media, including the news- paper, The Informer, which was under the editorship of L'Retta Wooldridge, as well as the students in journalism. Although the radio station WVUR, was unable to get off the ground this year, it is expected to be on the air next year, under the student management of Tommy Morris. The yearbook, The Paniher, is also pro- duced by this department. This year it was conceived and developed by Viola Evans, editor, and Ella Bryce, associate editor. .3 V i an ,- U' 'f' -- 'Jawa ' V' .' is '..:i . We began with staff of about twenty persons, and within a four week period, there remained two, the editor, Viola Evansg and the associate editor, Ella Bryceg both could be labeled conscientious, responsible, and concemed, but a more preferrable label is, sap! With the immeasurable advice and help of Mrs. Edwina C. Hall, advisor, and Mr. Archibald Benson, Coordina- tor of Journalism Department, as well as a few other kind souls, it is now possible for you to read this pas- sage. Despite the fact we had very little help, the first deadline was met. Needless to say that the last three deadlines were missed. Then the book was at a standstill, we had no pictures, so we called on good ole Mr. K. D. Webb, Mr. Scott Henderson, and Carl Richardson. Carl Richardson .4- i sbt. nwji, ..r' Ello Bryce It seemed that now we were between supplies, requisitions and money, along with the added hindrance of a long period of renovation in the office. We still didn't get enough pictures as fast as we needed them. One day a won- der came to us and offered his photography services. This wonder was Carl Richardson. Through the services of the Messrs. Webb, Henderson and Richardson, the book became better late than never. Explaining how we decided upon the theme, Preparing for the Final Frontier is another story. With the exception of last year's book, for the last twelve years the books have been primarily con- cerned with the past, the entire campus was so caught up in the past. We forgot that 50 years from now we will be what Union was. What the future will be is a question worth devoting a book IO. This book does not answer what the future will be or what the final frontier will be like, however, if effective, this book will firmly plant that question in the minds of its readers. Among the books are What Matter Man: A Biography of Martin Luther King, .lr.,' Confrontation: Black and Whitey The Negro Mood' and Before the Mayflower. I 1 C 48 Franklin Ajaji, a famous come- dian and a concerned black per- sonality, graced Union students with a lecture during the fall semester of this school year. Another of Union's illustrious guest speakers was Dick Gregory. Dick Gregory is first a humanitarian, then a writer, comedian, and politician. Dick Gregory was born in the Black ghetto of St. Louis, Missouri. While in high school, he became a state champion in track and field, and later expanded his honors on the track at Southern Illinois University in Car- bondale, Illinois. He entered the entertainment field and rose quickly to the top, once more becoming a 'champion' in American society. But soci- ety's definition of 'success' was not in line with Dick Gregory's moral passion. As he has described it, 'The real champion, I have come to understand, is the man who has risen to the crest of life's highest purpose - singular and complete devotion to serving one's fellow man'. Dick Gregory the recording artist has many albums to his credit, the most recent having been recorded on the Poppy label, a division of United Art- ists: The Light Side! The Dark Side, Dick Gregory on. Dick Gregory's Frankenstein, Dick Gregory alive at the Village Gate. Dick Gregory at Kent, State and Dick Gregory Caught in the Act. As an author he has written nine books, including his autobiography Nig- ger, The Shadow That Scares Me, Write Me ln, No More Lies: The Myth and Reality of A merican History, Gregory 's Political Primer, Dick Gregory lv Natural Diet for Folks Who Eat: Cookin' With Mother Nature, and his most recent publication, Dick Gregory's Bible Tales With Commentary. His current work-in-progress, Up from Nigger, is autobiographical and is slated for an early publication. Dick Gregory the lecturer, and humanitarian said, There is a great social revolution going on in America today, and the wonderful thing about this revolution is that it is not Black against White. It is simply right against wrong. The number one problem today is not air and water pollution. It is moral pollution. The same moral pollution which keeps the smoke up in the air keeps the Indian up on the reservation. Mary H. Futrell, president of the Virginia Education Association, in April, spoke to a host of education majors, teachers, and many other interested people. Her lecture on the status of educators today was well accepted. 1 V 1 f 'l fn 1 from the Richmond Newspapers fTimes Dispatch and News Leaderj came to speak to the journalism classes dur the fall semester. explained the pros and cons of being a journalist, and gave facts and figures to support their stance. -R: Mr. Frank McDonald, Jr., Director of Personnel: Mr. Marvin Garrette, Assistant Managing Editor of Times Dispatch: and Prof. Archibald Benson, Coordi- ator. Evans, Editor Ella Bryce, Associate Editor Each day at Union signifies further preparation for the future. preparation for a frontier that no one is completely certain of. Due to man's technological advancements. and vivid imagination. everyone is certain that such a frontier will prove to be challenging and that the emphasis will be on academic achievement. Union will have a part in the futtirejust as it has a part in the preparation for such a frontier. Union is a small black University with big ideals and goals. Union operates on an incredibly small income. and still manages to supply high caliber education. - Union is like a progressive business, We are its stockholders. and our shares equal our life's investments as well as our intellectual investments. As major stockholders. we should make sure that dividends are as large as possible from the richest sources of wisdom. Despite the struggles to attain a supei rior education for its students and the frustrations of determining in just which direction to proceed, Union has been and still is about the best thing that has happened to its enrollees.
