WILLARD BAILEY, Head Coach Coach Bailey had a strong showing in his first year as head monitor of the Virginia Union Panthers in 1972 when he posted a fine 5-2-2 record. He took over the reins from Thomas Harris who is still coaching basketball and handling the chores of Athletic Director. Bailey served six years as an assistant under Coach Harris, three years as offensive line coach. The 33 year old Virginia native is a 1959 graduate of Suffolk's Booker T. Washington High School where he co-captained the football team his senior year. A 1962 graduate of Norfolk State College, Bailey was an outstanding offensive lineman for four years on the Spartan's team. He received a Master's Degree in Physical Education from New York University. Before ioining V.U.U. as a Physical Education Instructor and a coach, Bailey, in 1964 was head basketball coach at Essex County High School in Tappahannock, leading his team to two undefeated years in District Five play. Coach Bailey's favorite theme on the football field is condition and precise tim- ing. Bailey also has the nack of getting the most out of his players. Coach Bailey is a winner and if there is a winning football team to be gotten, hwy Bailey will get it. This year Bailey along with his fine staff produced a 6-3 win loss record. Simpson Chapter The Student Association had its beginning in an organization known as the Education Club. It was organized by the late Dr. Robert P. Daniel in 1932. Professor C. W. Florence came to Virginia Union University in 1940 and began to work with the Education Club as an advisor. In 1948 the Education Club was changed by title to the Future Teachers of America and named the Joshua B. Simpson Chapter. The title of the Association was changed again in 1957 to the Student National Education Association. The Student Education Association functions on three levels: National, state, and local. As indicated above the local association at Virginia Union University is known as the Joshua B. Simpson who served for many years at Virginia Union University. Past advisors of the local chapter include Professor C. W. Florence, Professor Emeritus of Virginia Union University, Miss Leah V. Lewis, and Dr. D. N. Cowling, Vice-President. The essential purpose of the SNEA is to sponsor those activities that show promise of helping to select, guide and inform students interested in becoming teachers of elementary and secondary schools, and to promote and improve teaching as a profession on local, state, and national levels. 92 Moth Club 2 5 ff. ad A '-ml I -J' nf' t I I Sealed -- Floor: Charles Fields. C VIRGINIA UNION u Dear Fellow-Unionites, Class of 1973: 5 ,wf.E.Q.m.,,P,, As graduation day approaches, it is for you indeed a commencement - a beginning. It is the beginning of new opportunities. It is the beginning of new con- tributions you can and will make to relevant social concerns and needs. It is a beginning of new aware- nesses. lt is the beginning of new realizations of the part that Virginia Union has played not only in your past but more importantly to your future. lt is the beginning of a new relationship to your University, that of loyal and devoted alumni. Just as you have stood on the shoulders of the distinguished Unionites who came before you, so now you will be a source of inspiration and support to those generations yet to come. The faculty, the administration, fellow students and alumni, ioin in congratulating you upon your accom- plishments of the past and your opportunities for the future. Colleges cmd Universities Each college or university has its own individual ways of recognizing students of exceptional merit. How- ever, persons outside of that particular institution are almost completely unaware of these scholars. They compiled a long listing of outstanding students and called it WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERI- CAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES. On Virginia Union's campus the criterion for selection are: ill exceptional character, i2l academic excel- lence, Q31 outstanding personality, Q41 prospective community leaders, and Q51 active in college organiza- tions. The students with these qualifications are recommended by the faculty and voted on by the entire student body. It is therefore a popularity contest as well as a distinct national ,honor to be so elected. Dedication g .im ,r Mr. Charles Ewert Baker has been a dedicated faculty member since 1950. He has worked diligently with the Art Department and is one of the chief sponsors of the Fine Arts Festival Week. Mr. Baker is known, loved and respected by both students and teachers alike. He is a scholar in his field. Many of the paintings in the Library, Henderson Center and the designs of our bulletins and Christmas cards were done by him, the latest being the logo. Although many words of praise and honor are used in reference to him, they can fully describe his years of toil and sacrifice In an effort t . o say thanks, we dedicate the 1973 Panther to our highly esteemed teacher, Mr. Charles E. We have tmally finished it!! Many thanks go to the entire Panther staff and our adviser, Mr. A. H. Benson. We have spent many long hours in the Publication office. Of course, my greatest thanks go to Mr. Larry Rich- ard Green, the most outstanding husband in the world to me, because he was very patient and allowed me to work those long hours. This year we have tried to present to you a pictorial history of important and casual occurrences at Virginia Union. We have tried to make this book Union's best. Our goal: to include the entire University community in a manner that would inform and enlighten you. We hope we succeeded. Editor A GWENDOLYN MARIEA ADAMS 54 Commercial Ave. New Brunswick, N.
