Registration 1968 And this is just the beginning of the line. Virginia Union stretched its wings as far as the west coast the entire East- ern Seaboard and some foreign coun- tries to obtain the Freshman Class of 1968-69. The freshmen have been en- ergetic in participating in campus or- ganizations, and began with a highly enthusiastic attitude. They have shown good signs of maturity in adjusting to the routine ot' College life. Of course the upper-classmen are used to the hum-drum ot' registration, but look for- ward to graduation, and that's how they get through it all. W...-1, Mass confusion, but Registration must go on. The 1969 Edition of the Panther Yearbook is dedi- cated to Mr. Samuel Hugo Brown. The selection of Mr. Brown as the 1969 honoree by the Panther Staff is an expression of the appreciation for his sincere and deep devotion to Virginia Union. Mr. Brown has worked in many capacities since 1947, the year he joined Virginia Union Faculty. He has been Dean of Students, Director of Public Relations, Place- ment Officer, Freshman Counselor, Recruiting Officer, Choir Manager CToured with Choirl, Dormitory Di- rector, Registration and Orientation Coordinator, Di- rector of Alumni Affairs, and Basketball and Football Announcer and he is presently teaching mathematics and statistics. Mr. Brown is a native of Petersburg, Virginia. He re- ceived his B.S. from Virginia Union University and his M.S. from Howard University. Mr. Brown, in appreciation of your services for almost a quarter of a century at Virginia Union University, THE 1969 PANTHER STAFF DEDICATES THIS ANNUAL TO YOU. Spady, of The President The class of 1969 leaves the 'hallowed grounds and dear old walls' of Virginia Union at a period of unprecedented challenge and opportunity. This is true whether one considers the greatly expanded op- portunities for graduate and professional education, new opportunities and challenges in the world of work, or new opportunities and challenges for leadership and service among people in the solution of their problems. We believe that this year's graduates are more deeply concerned than any before them with the latter consideration and that if their immediate attention is given to one of the other considerations it will be only to enable them to render more effective leadership and service. Firm in this faith in you, your Alma Mater bids you a fond farewell with high expectations of good things to come from you in the years ahead? Thomas H. They are mixed, tem- pered, and somewhat reshaped by the school's atmosphere. Students mature as they live more and varied experiences and so does the university. Thus, the university and its students change and grow to- gether and give to each that which is more important-life and a definite personality that is unique. The Panthers were con- sidered to be one of the better teams in the CIAA at the beginning of 1968-69 season. However, due to subtractions from the ranks, the Panthers manipulated their deficient forces to finish seventh in the CIAA. At the outset, the ten-man roster was as follows: Michael Davis, Earl Morris, John Hunt, John Payne, Ulys- ses McDowell, Willie Spence, Michael Williams, Anthony Davis, James Carter, and Eric Rhodes. The first seven, excluding Spence, were on the 1967-68 team. This group didnit quite jell as exhibited by the fact that they were 6-9 after one semester. The second semester found the Panthers minus Morris, Payne, Williams, and Rhodes. To the original six were added: Melvin Childs, Irv Kiffin, and Gregory Hill. This transplanted team finished the remainder of the season 5-4 and represented Virginia Union at the CIAA tournament. There were bright spots for the Panthers. Michael Davis for the second straight season led the CIAA in scor- ing, this time with a 32.6 average. John Hunt finished 7th in field goal accuracy with a 57.4 percentage. Earl Morris was tied for the twentieth spot in scoring with an 18.0 average for his I5 games. For Michael Davis, Willie Spence, and James Carter replacements must be found. ESQUIRES: Henry Mack, Peter Walker, John Monteque, Robert Fields, Irving Strickland, Leland Pierce, James Fullwood, Alphonso Bowers, Ronald Jewel, Mark Hollins, Tony Keeling. The Esquires Club is a new dynam- ic social club on campus this year. The Esquires are outstanding young men who have led the student body in scholarship, S.G.A. activities, athletics, and not to mention the Who's Who in American Colleges List. Although fresh- men are allowed to pledge, their con- tributions on the athletics field and in the classroom will make them the pride and joy of the Esquires. The Esquire club is not composed of a group of guys whose main intentions are grooving and having a lot of fun, rather the Esquire's club was organized on this campus to instill in those men who wish to become a part of the Esquires a sense of dignity, self-con- fidcnce, and pride in being a Blackman on Va. Union's campus. In doing so they will know that they are MEN be- fore all the world, and gentlemen by anyones standards. The twelve ladies of the court are among Va. Union's most beautiful black women and can easily hold their own against any of the sororities or frater- nity queens on campus. The ladies of the court are the essence of grace and charm and are a definite asset to the Esquire club. Christmas in June! i From one ex-editor to a soon to be ex-editor . . . o-. Farewell Dean Russell Dean Russell always had time for students. Whenever interrupted, Dean Russell always looked up with smile. Dean Russell, on behalf of the Union Family, the 1969 Panther Yearbook Staff wishes to express profound gratitude for the services you have rendered here at Virginia Union, and we all want you to know, our best goes out to you in your new position as Research Director for public relations of the American Can Co. in New York. Dean Russell is a native of Middlesex County, Virginia, and pastor of the Westwood Baptist Church. He is a 1949 graduate of Virginia Union and holds the M.A. degree from Case Western Reserve University and is a doctoral candidate at the University of Virginia. He is also a former social worker and Benedict College professor of sociology. He joined the staff of Virginia Union as instructor in 1956, became dean of students in 1958 and dean of the college in 1964. Dean Russell has worked with high efficiency plus warmth and understanding, friendship and broad human kindness. His warm personality has been the well spring for inspiration, consolation, sympathy and moral support for hundreds of young men and women with whom he has had as- sociation. Dean Russell, we hate to lose you but we also realize you must press toward the mark of high calling in your professional endeavors. Q 201 Fimshed at Last' Finished at Last! The 1969 Panther Yearbook is com- pleted! We have tried to encompass as many facets of campus life as possible, the build-ups, the let-downs, the many confusions, the growing pains, the some- time quiet still ofthe night, all of which went into the making of the 1968-69 school year. The publication of a yearbook requires cooperation and hard work of all con- cerned or affected by its publication. We regret that we were not afforded as much help and cooperation as we had hopefully anticipated. Nevertheless, the best was done with the staff we had and the caliber of experiences encountered has led us to greater maturity and broadened the horizon of our vision and understanding. As is true with any publication, there are those who deserve special recogni- tion. To Joel Ransom, Sophomore Class Editor, we would like to extend special thanks, for not only did he do his sec- tion well, but was always willing to assume the responsibilities that his co- staff workers failed to carry out. Alex- ander Hines helped us meet the dead- lines. Special thanks also go out to Art Editor, Elton Filson, and Sports Editor, Christopher Fisher. Of course, our thanks also go out to Mr. Terry Gilson, Intercollegiate Representative, and to our Faculty Adviser, Mr. Archibald H. Benson, as well as to those of you who stopped by the Panther Office from time to time and offered your assis- tance. Now the 1969 Panther is yours. It is hoped that you will cherish this annual now and in future years and as the years pass, occasionally turn these pages and say, 'gThis was my life, l968l Evelyn Lorether Ford, Editor l Thank God Almighty, has Finished at Last!
