■a FOREWO RD The latter part of the nineteenth century saw the first of the V. P. I. alumni, who emerged into the world as graduates of an unknown school. Now the outside world has been shown the value of the training given here, and the V. P. I. graduates going out into the world are put on their mettle to live up to the records of the older alumni. We have chosen some of these outstanding alumni for presentation in these pages as a mark of our admiration of, and respect for, their achievements, and as an inspi- ration to the present and future students of V. P. I.
