It has gn,%vn from a small plant of one huildmg, three professors, and a few students to its present comparatively large proportions. The first graduating class in IXS numhered twelve, while in 1933 the total number of degrees conferred was 358. In recognition of the purposes for which it was founded, the college has devoted its energies to education in agriculture, engineering, business, and applied sciences; and research connected therewith. Its distinctive function is t« prepare for useful occupations, especially those which develop the natural resources of the State and add to its economic wealth. Its campus is the entire State, for pr.-ictically every city, town, and rural community is being reached through its extension service. I he institution is thus a powerful factor in the development of the State, not only of it, .agricultural, industrial and commerc.a resources, but also of all that makes for a happier people through better homes, schools, and other social institutions and agencies. , , , i •. „ Viririnia Tech is now known throughout the civilued world hy the work of thousands of its f..rmer students, many of whom are occupying position, of high honor and trust.
