AS INSPIRATION In life, men always have a goal. There is always with them some dream of conquest or achievement which will parallel or excel that of some other individual. In fact, without having the works of others as a basis by which to evalu- ate accomplishments and to provide impetus for further work, man ' s journey through his years on this planet would be duller, and his work would be less brilliant. The youth, in looking forward, wishes, usually, to equal or better the work of a man who began life in circumstances similar to his own. The young man, going out from his college, always likes to select as his standard of comparison the achievement of the older alumni of his institution. Because of this we present to present and future students, the records of a number of rep- resentative V. P. I. alumni, men in fields for which the college is giving training. The list is by no means complete, but we feel that the achieve- ments of this small group of former Techmen are more than sufficent grounds for hope— and in- spiration.

I DEDICATION Advancement in military life calls for qualities of a char- acter perfiaps even fiigher than those demanded in civil life. John Blackwell Maynard, Commandant of Cadets, who was graduated in 1907 in civil engineering and is now a lieutenant colonel in the U. S. Army, is a typical successful graduate, and his qualities are an example of those found in V. P. I. ' s outstanding alumni. Therefore, to Lieutenant Colonel Maynard and to the other successful graduates of V. P. I,, we dedicate this, the fortieth volume of The Bugle.
