Harold Montague. So effective and success- ful was he in introducing and developing an a cappella tradition that the choir soon came to be known on the tour circuit as the Virginia State A Cappella Choir. This love for artistic unaccompanied singing was nurtured by Montague's successors, Mozart Frazer, Aldrich Ad- kins, Oscar Henry and Eugene Simpson. In recent years accompanied repertoire has been ad- ded to the programs of the choir for variety and in order to provide a more balanced exposure to great choral lit- erature. In addition, the choir has collaborated with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra in the presentation of such major works as Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Brahms and Verdi Requiems, and Ginastera's Psalm 150. Under the learsrship of the present director, Carl Har- ris, Jr., the choir of 60 voices will add to live perfor- mances Work in television and recording. The choir has recorded the choral works of Hall Johnson, William Dawson and Undine Moore, and in subsequent years will record the works of Harry T. Burleigh, Edward Boatner, Nathaniel Dett, John Work, Noah Ryder and Frederick Hall.
