VIRGINIA STATE COLLEGE We recall the long pull, the agonies, the unrelenting struggles, the undimmed visions of those who have come before, dreaming great dreams, sacrificing talents and energies, and now resting in eternal peace. We take so much for granted. We often ignore cherished goals and Worthy objectives. We can so easily lose sight of the noble ambitions of those who have preceded us in time, and from Whose burdened shoulders thread-bare mantles are taken and placed upon younger shoulders to bear. Let us be buoyant in spirit as we draw nigh this day in Thanksgiving and praisev. As we, the class of 1955, meander into the past of Virginia State College, We see Written on historyis pages an epic depicting the founding of a great educational institution. Virginia State College was known previously as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute in 1882, as the Virginia Normal and Industrial Institute in 1902, and as the Virginia State College for Negroes from 1930 to 1946 when the College was given its present name. The school was opened in October 1883, but it was not until 1886, that Old Virginia Hall was completed. This building stood on the sight of F leet's farm high above the rippling Waters of the Appomattox overlooking the city of Petersburg. The building was romanesque in architecture and practically all activities Went on Within its confines. It was in that same year of 1886 that the college department under the administration of Iohn Mercer Langston, the College,s first president, sent out its first graduates-a class of nine.
