Coach Harold Deane, CIAA Coach of the Year '45- To coach Harold A. Deane, 1974 CIAA coach of the year, who is sometimes referred to as a haberdasher's dream by his attire on the court, the sport of basket- ball has become his life. This attitude is reflected by his exuberance and enthusiasm on the playing court and his efforts in preparation. In his five years on the Hill Deane has turned a hopeless basketball program into a small college powerhouse. In 3 years, upon being named head coach in 1969, Deane turned a 7-17 team into a respectable 14-12 squad that was tournament bound. For this feat he received his first coach of the year honor in 1972. The 22-8 team of this year will go in the books as one of the best efforts ever at Virginia State. This team showed class and style in winning the Fort Eustis and NAIA District 29 tournaments and ending their brilliant season with a heart- breaking 4 point loss at the NAIA Nationals in Kansas City. Next year should be interesting and very challenging to Deane with the big guns leaving due to graduation. They will be young and inexperienced, and might not achieve as much as this year's squad. But, Keep the faith Harold, you've done it before, so do it again!
