THE BLACK AND GOLD RUSH IS ON!! Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.: The first and leading brotherhood of the Ethiopians. Alpha Phi Alpha was the first national fraternity to embrace Black students. Since that time it has become both international and interracial and is composed of over 40,000 strongwilled Alphamen with chapters in 40 states, District of Columbia, British West In- dies, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The year '73-'74 was a good year for the men of APA, their achievements are: A.P. Hill Project, Baptist Children's Home, Sickle Cell Anemia Pro- ject, Cultural Film Festival. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority-defined formally-is a sisterhood of college women sharing the common ideals of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. To date, the organization has spread throughout the 50 states, Africa, and the West Indies to include 406 chapters. This year, the Alpha Epsilon Chapter at VSC, established in 1926, sponsored their first Little Miss AKA . Money rais- ed from the pageant was donated to one of its national targets-Project Sickle Cell Anemia. Among other ac- complishments during the '73-,74 school year are: tutoring at the Baptist Children's Home, providing recreation for the children at Petersburg Training School, beautifying the college campus, and steering the opening of the Sickle Cell Anemia Center which will be located at Memorial Hospital.
