Bonnie's home is in Roanoke, and she plans to be a switchboard operator. Two years later Bill Kidd joined our class. Since the day he came, Bill has been attracted to girls, but now he is attracted to only one. Bill's home is in Pulaski, and he plans to be a teacher. In 1950 Juanita Turner transferred here from the North Carolina School for the Blind. Nita scream- ed and cried when her mother left her here -- not because she was home-sick, but because she had the same housemother she had had in the North Carolina school. Instead of returning to Newport News, Nita plans to make her home in Richmond. The third person to stumble across the pages of our history was Alfred Luck. That first day in 1953 Alfred was a very lost boy -- so lost, that he found himself in the girls' dormitory. He still has trouble staying away from there. Alfred, from Bumpass, plans to be a farmer. In 1953 a tornado struck V. S. B. There was no calm after the storm. Jenny Maynard is still going strong. J enny's home is in Portsmouth. She plans to be a teacher. In 1954 Danny Bowman joined our class. Thinking this was a quiet place, he was very much disillusioned. Maybe this explains his playing the organ and piano so loud. Danny's home is in Harrisonburg. He plans to be a math teacher. Adrien Owens joined our class in 1956. She was always getting lost, and after five years she is still lost. Adrien, nowfrom Baltimore, will make a good secretary -- if she ever learns to get along with her typewriter. In 1958 our class was completed when a tall, thin figure invaded it. Times have changed but Judy Adams has not. Judy plans to be a dictaphone typist. Class Prophecy Gazing into acrystal ball borrowed from an old fortune-teller at the county fair, I saw numerous unbelievable episodes about the class of '6l. First I saw a happy, middleaged woman sitting at her sewing machine, surrounded by a dozen lively children. I knew then that Judy Adams had reached her goal. Next, I saw a 1972 newspaper with headlines reading, A DEAF, BLIND, DUMB, SKINNY DAIRY FARMER LAUNCHES FIRST SATELLITE DAIRY FARM. Danny Bowman had found his place in life -- in orbit. Then, lo and behold, I saw a rather charming matron. Socialite Bonnie Coleman was rescuing a burned cake from the oven of her new atomic range. Bill's party would be a flop tonight. 8 No sooner had that picture faded away than I saw an even stranger one. Down the track of the K Sz Mrailroad streaked a modern nuclear-powered locomotive. Behind the throttle was a heavy set figure relaxing in his chaise lounge. Bill Kidd was locomoting up and down rails now instead of the halls of VSB. The next scene really shocked me. On the steps of the Capitol I saw the President-elect, truck driver, Al Luck, making his inaugural address. One particular statement still remains in my mind: I believe in the rights of all free Americans -- life, liberty, and the happiness of pursuit. Iwasn't surprised at the next scene. A plump school teacher was sitting at her desk conducting a history class. Virginia Maynard had succeeded in getting Mr. Tyler's job. Then I saw a disgruntled executive. In front of her desk, looking rather woebegone, was a trim little secretary pleading her cause. Adrien Owens still hadn't mastered her typewriter. In the last picture I saw a cozy home in Richmond. At the breakfast table sat a middle-aged couple. The husband didn't look very well pleased over what he was drinking. Juanita Turner Shinault had finally succeeded in getting Ronnie to drink his milk. Cast will And Gestament We the Class of 1961, being of sound mind and body, do hereby make and officially record this our last will and testament. I, Judy Adams, leave to Iris Vann a star picked from the heavens. Iris will never be able to reach one herself. I, Danny Bowman, leave my ability to play the piano to Preston Mauck. I, Bonnie Coleman, leave to Barbara Davis my ability to keep my head around boys. I, Bill Kidd, leave my ability to sing to Barry Alderson. I, Al Luck, leave my athletic ability to Willie Vaughn. I, Jenny Maynard, leave my mischievous ability to Amelia Glass. I, Adrien Owens, leave my appetite to Wesley Williams. I, Juanita Turner, leave my pony tail to Mrs. Patterson. In closing, we would like to make one seri- ous and sincere bequest. To Mr. Shinpaugh, Mr. English, and all the members of the faculty and staff we leave an undying gratitude for the guid- ance, the understanding, the patience, and the friendship they have given us during our many years here. We do hereby appoint Mrs. Fenwick the sole executor of this, our last will and testament. We the Class of 1961, set our hand and seal this first day of June, nineteen hundred and sixty-one. 9 l 'mf' P 4 H459 ,'.
