V The PARADE GROUND The western half of the parade ground was developed in 1867, and the northwestern extension of about three acres in 19 12. o t Original by Jean Antoine Houdon. March, 1856, the Gen- eral Assembly authorized the Governor to expend the sum of $10,000 for the purchase of the first bronze replica for the Insti- tute. I ' ll veiled in 1856. OTe BRONZE GUKfS The two large guns by the statue, L ' Envee and Le Severe, are 24 pounders and were cast in Duaci, France, in 1693 and 1678, respectively, during the reign of Louis XIV. These great bronze guns weigh 5.500 pounds each, and are eleven feet seven inches long. ate CADET BATTERY Presented to the Cadet Corps in 1850 by President of the United States, Zachary Taylor. Used by the Confederacy during the Civil War. May 10. 1913. the battery was officially retired.
