MR. C. ERNEST COOKE English History of Art MR. DONALD KANIPE Coordinator of Freshman English Journalism MR. DAN MARSTELLER English Creative Writing The Library offers 21,000 volumes for parallel reading, term papers, and personal enjoyment. Although Mark Twain once said, A classic is something that everyone wants to have read, this was proved untrue in the English Department this year. The writings of the literary giants were opened to the Intermont girl in such a way that she Wanted to read them. English history and literature went hand-in-hand in the Sophomore classes, with the Sunday after- noon exhibits from the C. Ernest Cooke Collection paralleling the literary period being studied. Freshmen strove to develop originality, natural- ness of expression, and correctness in both written and spoken English. Much of this training was concentrated in the preparation of a formal, de- tailed research paper. Classes in both creative and journalistic writing were popular, and publication media were provid- ed by Cothurnus, the literary magazine, and The Cauldron, the campus newspaper. The student-teacher conferences, which helped to individualize teaching in the English Department, were very effective. The Freshman English course is designed so that the student may learn the skills of ex- pression and organization.
