OIIIOIC The subtle signs of change and progress which are always present on Virginia lntermont's campus gave way in 1966-67 to very obvious and important evidence that the academic process here is neither standing still nor inching forward. Dramatic change in every phase of campus life has characterized the year. Though spiritual growth remained an integral part of the Intermont girl, she found, in the complete reorganiza- tion of the campus religious activities, new avenues down which to travel in her search for the ultimate meaning of life. Changes in the physical make-up of the college have been made often over the years, but this year saw adopted a whole new concept for the entire campus. The old front gates fell before the bulldozer, construction on a new chapel was begun, and an ultimate plan for all buildings to face a quadrangle began to be more than an architectls drawing. Not only did new faces appear in the office of the Dean of Students and other administrative offices, but a changed and revitalized interpretation of the function of these offices was present. lntellectual growth, inherent in the Intermont girl, was fostered and stimulated by a lecture series that presented world-renowned speakers who were on campus for a day, lecturing formally, conducting seminars, and meet- ting the students face to face as individuals. Even in the lighter side of life, there was change. The out-of-date Rat Weekn was abolished! The lntermont girl faced a social change and had an opportunity to develop lasting friendships through social events on campus. Fall Frolics held in October featured a concert with the Jerneymen, a favorite folk-singing group from East Tennessee State. There was also a Hmixeri' with The Escorts performing. Thanksgiving gave an opportunity to show a genuine spirit of giving. The girls of each dormitory hall collected food for that hall's basket, which was presented in Z1 special Thanksgiving Chapel Service and later distributed personally to needy families. The Christmas Formal, held at the Martha Wash- ington Inn on December 10, was sponsored by the Sophomore Class. The Childrenis Christmas Party brought happiness to one hundred and fifty-children and as many lntermont girls. Christmas caroling and club parties set the mood for the true spirit of the holidays which began December 15. The Freshman Class successfully took its turn at entertainment in February with the Sweetheart Dance. Publications Weekend remains a cherished memory. The dance held in April began the rush of events leading to final exercises. Enjoyed Innovations . . . When the students arrived in September, the most imme- diately evident changes were in the physical appearance of the campus. Interment Hall, a modern six-story structure, housing one hundred eighty students, was soon nicknamed 'LHotel Inter- montfl Former Senior Hall had been converted into the Humani- ties Building which contained a modern language laboratory, additional classrooms, faculty offices, and a new Guidance Department. Later in the fall, the front campus was trans- formed into a construction site for a chapel to be completed in the fall of 1967. The population explosion brought the enrollment to an all- time high of five hundred and ninety students. Miss Peggy Hart, Dean of Students, and Mr. Kenneth Glass, Guidance Director, were welcomed as new administrative members. . ,, -Q.,-f ,ff -- Eff' F '4- KN xy.: . .X ., -. .,.-.. .',- 'L 'A . MISS PEGGY HART Dean of Student Personnel For the day and world in which we live, the ageless concepts of loyalty and freedom are emerging out of historical survival into the forefront of present thought. Freedom within loyalty now exists on the cutting edge of human relationships, and from your own vantage point such freedom offers new beginnings to present terminations. Your educational pilgrimage will continue to be filled with just such beginnings. Discovery of newness in the old, beginnings in ends, meaningfulness in void, and freedom within the bounds of loyalty-this has been your rendevous with truth. You have contributed to it and received from it -in such a way that the next step becomes that of exploring deep- er depths and higher heights within yourself, within others, and with God. Although Mark Twain once said, A classic is something that everyone wants to have read, this was proved untrue in the English Department this year. The writings of the literary giants were opened to the Intermont girl in such a way that she Wanted to read them. English history and literature went hand-in-hand in the Sophomore classes, with the Sunday after- noon exhibits from the C. Ernest Cooke Collection paralleling the literary period being studied. Freshmen strove to develop originality, natural- ness of expression, and correctness in both written and spoken English. Much of this training was concentrated in the preparation of a formal, de- tailed research paper. Classes in both creative and journalistic writing were popular, and publication media were provid- ed by Cothurnus, the literary magazine, and The Cauldron, the campus newspaper. The student-teacher conferences, which helped to individualize teaching in the English Department, were very effective. The Freshman English course is designed so that the student may learn the skills of ex- pression and organization. The library offers a center for study in depth and a quiet retreat. English Mr. and Mrs. Marsteller and their son, Peter, are a well-known family on campus. MRS. MARION SMOTHERS English MISS ANNE BROOKS English DR. ACHILLE RIVIELLO French Political Science MR. German was offered for the first time in the language program. The instructor, Mr. Willem Bertsch, is also conductor of the Kingsport Sym- phony Orchestra. Elementary, intermediate, and conversational French and Spanish were offered. Conversational courses exposed students to lin- guistic experiences in everyday French and Spanish. Areas of emphasis for all the foreign languages were grammar, composition, selected readings, and pronunciation. Forei n Language A modern language laboratory was a valuable innovation this year. NEAL TOLSON p p Religion and Philosophy Courses in the study of the Bible are designed with a critical, historical approach. Religion and Philosoph To remove unrealistic senti- mentalism from the student's thinking and to show a real- istic relationship between man and man as well as man and God were the objectives of courses offered in religion and philosophy. Helping to attain these oh- jectives were studies in the History of the Old Testament and of the New, in Christian denominations and in the world's other great religions, in ethics, in logic, and in his- tory of philosophy. With the guidance of Dr. Taylor and Mr. Tolson, the student developed her power of reasoning and sought an- swers to religious and philo- sophical questions. A study of Old and New Testament history is divided into two courses. They give an en- lightened view of these historical works. Are there any questions or comments? MRS LEE KOVACS Psychology MRS DWIGHT WILLETT History Sociology ARL HOLLAND History Economics Group study of a current social problem makes students aware of the world around them. To what extent do heredity and environment affect man's actions? What are the causes of war? What are the reasons for our political myths? How does geography influence man's behavior? These and many more questions are areas of discussion and probing for students of the social sci- ences. History, sociology, psychology, geography, economics and political science presented vital information about our cul- ture. Courses in the social sciences challenged students to become good citizens and to search for answers to social problems. Both American History and Western Civilization were of- fered two semesters each. Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, and Marriage and the Family involved the study of the group. General psychology and child psychology courses involved the study of the individual. Maps, climatic and weather conditions, and population distribution were stressed in Introduction to Geography, a two-semester course. Political Science was divided into State and Local Government, offered one semester, and Federal Government, another semester. The Constitution was studied in depth in Political Science. Retailing, marketing, and principles of Economics dealt with production, distribution, and con- sumption of goods in the American economy. Films, group studies and reports, research papers, and parallel reading of current magazines and newspapers were widely used in the social sciences. Miss AUDREY MR. Sandals, beat, and beards, the proverbial sym- bols of the art world, were not applicable this year to a hard-working, sensitive group on lntermont's campus. Through major programs in Fine and Ap- plied Art, these students prepared for careers in fashion and interior design, commercial drawing, advertising design, teaching, and many other fields. Exhibits of the art of students, instructors, and local artists, as well as of items from Virginia Museum Collections were held throughout the year. The C. The Art Department added a new instructor this year in the person of Mr. Arthur France, who came to us directly from a Fulbright Fellowship in Belgium. Advertising design involves the building up of skills to be applied to advertising media. MR. As a disciplinary body, these campus leaders promote integrity, honor, and school spirit among the students through faculty-student coop- eration. The association established a committee to Wel- come all new students, the orientation program, in the fall. Another activity of this elected body was the annual Parents' Weekend, held February 17 to 19. This occasion provided an opportunity for parents to meet and talk with the administration and faculty and to attend campus functions. Student Life Committee The newly formed Student Life Pro- gram, under the direction of Miss Barbara Frogge, and the Student Life Committee, unified the spiritual, social, and cultural activity of student campus life. These seven students played an active role of leadership and responsibility throughout the year. Chapel programs and seminars, featur- ing renowned professionals in a wide range of fields, were led by members of the Student Life Committee. All social ac- tivities, including umixersf' Winter Carni- val, Spring Frolics, May Day, and many others were organized by the Committee. Members welcomed performing guests on campus and ushered at performances of the Fine Arts Series. Beverly Hamilton, Fire Chief, plays the role to the hilt. 91 0 Phi Theta Kappa Phi Theta Kappa is a junior college honor scholar- ship society which is equivalent, in general, to Phi Beta Kappa for four-year colleges. Chapters are established in fully accredited junior colleges of the highest rank. Members in Phi Theta Kappa is the highest award any student at Virginia Intermont can re- ceive for over-all academic excellence. Sophomores having a minimum 2.0 QBJ average are eligible for membership, and the top five freshman students who have maintained this average into the spring of the year are also eligible. Eleanor Bryant, who had the highest academic average of her class, served as president of Phi Theta Kappa this year. The group sponsored a din- ner in the spring to initiate new members, but the most important aaotivityv of this group is getting into it! I would first like to thank my advisors, Mr. Joseph Ward and Miss Mary Lou Smith. Both have endured long and tedious hours of constant work, Miss Smith, proofreading and Mr. Ward, keeping the staff on the move, checking layouts and many other details. Secondly, I would like to say Thank you to my staff for being most capable and cooperative. They are to be highly commended for a job well executed. Also, I wish to thank Mr. Richard Dickerson, our photographer, who has spent many long hours tak- ing, developing, and printing pictures. Finally, I would like to show my appreciation, by saying thank you to everyone else on campus, faculty WK Our tower and students alike, for their cooperation throughout the year. Although this is the ending page of the '67 INTERMONT, I hope that you .will find it to be only the beginning of many memories to look upon. My staff and I have endeavored to make this, the ,67 IN- TERMONT, the best yearbook Virginia Intermont has ever had, and I hope that we may have reached our goal. Best Wishes in the future.
