Text from Pages 1 - 171 of the 1962 volume:

Do You Remember College is more than an institution of learning. It is a foundation for new experiences and social maturity. Throughout the year there have been many events at V. I. which have helped us to grow both spiritually and socially. Arrival day in September with its varied emotions and registration day with its frustrating schedules are unforgettable events in the life of each student. The campus was soon stirring with the spirit of class competition as the Song Contest deadline drew near and seniors emerged victorious. The theme of the Christmas formal, Pink Prelude, added a touch of fantasy to the holiday air. The Efligy Hunt and the lunior-Senior basket- ball game were additional proinpters of the fine art of sportsmanship. Let us not exclude our inspirational reflections as we recall the magni- tude and influence of Religious Emphasis Vlfeelc. VV ith the advent of spring came Publications Vtfeekend and, hnally, Craduation Day. Again the varied emotions poured forth as we bid farewell to V. l. Thus are the events which helped us to practice the finest art of all -the fine art of friendship. 4' ' W sf THE 196 f, .. . . 1. . .. ,A-f ww-f f. .1 ff. As our friend, amicably adaptable to any atmosphere, deeply devoted to our betterment. As repairman of televisions and troubles, appliances and affliction. As prankster equipped with a sly smile inevitably to become a broad grin. Who says of himself, I have been rode hard and put up wet. You will also come to realize that the need for leadership in all areas of human relations is greater now than in any previous period in history. lt is my hope that at this time you will dedicate yourself to the purpose of achieving as high a degree of maturity as possible in all of the dilferent areas of development and life. Only this would be a worthy application of what you have accomplished thus far. My very best wishes to you for the future. Cordially yours, FLOYD V. TURNER President Mr. Carl E. Todd As you go to another college, pursue a voca- tion, or marry, many new challenges will be en- countered. Face them calmly, and with deep thought conquer them in Ways which please you deeply. Never forsake your honor for God-given gifts with others-then life will be sweet and have fervent meaning for you. God bless you all as you continue to make a good life for yourselves. Most cordially, CARL E. TODD Dean of the College Miss Louise Brevver Dear Seniors z As you go from Virginia Intermont to take your place in the world, I wish for you success and happiness. S ecretary The Student Government is composed of every student at Virginia Intermontg its main objective is, therefore, to further the best interests of the student body. Doing this, it strives to secure cooperation be- tween different organizations and to promote responsi- bility, self-control, loyalty, and honesty among the students. The focus point of the Student Government is found in the Student Council, a group composed of the Student Government officers, the presidents of each hall, a day student representative, and three second semester juniors. Throughout the year these girls devote themselves to helping each student find her place at Virginia Intermont, leading or giving' advice whenever called upon. ' , HO OR CO CTL The Honor Council, the backbone of the Honor System, serves as a judicial board in determining in- fractions of the Honor System. This organization strives to encourage all students to attain mature judg- ment in governing their actions. .The membership includes the Academic Dean, the Dean of VVomen, four other faculty members appointed by thc President of the college, the Presi- dent of Student Government, the Presidents of the Senior Class and Iunior Class, and the President of the Hall on which the girl appearing before the Honor Council lives. Mr. Al Todd supervises the line arts classes, While Mr. Ioe Wfard instructs the commercial art groups. The Art Department holds its classes in the new Fine Arts Center, the most recent addition to the Virginia lntermont campus. Is it really that old? There's surely a hidden meaning in those eyes. One of the features of the chorus' year is a tour between semesters. The sextet has been organized to sing popular music for local clubs and organizations. Page 98 A highlight in the study of the music major is her graduation recital given near the end of the second year. Once a month a recital is given by a student in the department. Kenneth Armada, a distinguished artist, brought a musical interlude to our campus. The Music Department is under the direction of Mr. Ralph Osthott. Teaching in the department are Miss Frances Eller, Miss Virginia Bates, and Miss Margaret Maxwell. Page 99 Department of ursin The most enjoyable job of all.
