TURNABOUT 1987 Stand By Me Turnabout 1987 will long be remembered because of the date, Saturday, the 31st of October. HALLOWEEN. Despite the loud protests, the date could not be changed, and there was some specula- tion that participation would suffer, and thaf Turnabout shouldn't have been held at all. Nevertheless, when the eventful evening finally arrived, Halloween had al- most been forgotten among the sharp- dressed crowd. The dance had an extra- special touch added to its theme. As the couples swayed to Stand By Me, the vel- vet tones of Fred Tibayan created mag- ic. The gym itself was transformed by bur- gundy. pink, and silver baloons, stream- ers, and hearts. Joe and the Broz pro- vided the music, excellent and energetic renditions of popular songs, and the night flew by. Individual pictures were taken by Me Kenna. By the end of the night. VHS students realized that in spite of their mis- givings over the dance, it had turned out to be quite a success.

The students of VHS made Home- coming 1987 a success despite the late starting date and early football schedule. Homecoming week was September 20-25, only a week and half into the school year. Nevertheless, we made it worthwhile. On Monday, we wore all the blue and white we could find for Blue Pride Day and at lunch we tried to Pin the Tail on the Devil. After attempts by many, Bonnie Hill had the closest tail. Tuesday, VHS traveled back in time to the six- ties for Hippie Day . The polyes- ter was dragged out and there was even a peace movement held on the 3rd floor hallway. The noon activity was a cracker-eat- ing-whistling relay and Jennifer Moeller ran away with the race. On Wednesday, summer clothes were worn for the last time this year as Virginia students went Back to the Beach . The lunch- time events reflected the theme with: Guys Sexy Legs and Bub- ble Blowing contests. Darrin Cobb and John McDonald tied for the biggest bubble. Winners of the legs contest were: Kyle John- son, most athletic; Jesse Miller and Dan Skinner, sexiest; Brian Tanttu. harriest; and Joe Richard, least harriest. Thursday was a blessing for many tired people since they were allowed to “wake up and go for Pajama Day . That noon, the team of John McDonald, Tom Squires, Kathy Maki and Chris Johnson won the relay race in which they put on. took off and exchanged winter clothes. Friday and Coro- nation finally came and students dressed their best. Carnations were delivered first hour to friends , sweethearts , and the secretly admired , providing a little disruption before the as- sembly 3rd hour. VHS rocked to the sounds of Private Property before the Royal Court, consist- ing of Tricia Koski, Kathy Maki, Ta- bitha Mock, Kim Picek, Darrin Cobb, Chris Heine, Jesse Miller, and Chad Pajari was presented Emcees Kara Tomazin and Marsh Johnson ended the suspense by crowning Queen Kathy Maki and King Jesse Miller. After school, we showed our pride in the annual parade down Chestnut Street. The VHS band marched and there were several float entries, but in the end. the town merchants picked the A Cappella and Orchestra floats for first place and the Mixed Choir float for second place. The pa- rade ended with the candidates and King and Queen riding in convertibles donated for use by area car dealers. Homecoming ended with a high- energy football game against the Hermantown Hawks. The VHS Marching Blues and front units put on their usual outstanding half- time show at which the Royal Court was introduced to the crowd. Although the final score of the game was 7-0 in the Hawks favor, VHS spirit never died. After, most of the student body could be found jammin' to Doc and the Surgeons at the Miners'. Home- coming Week 1987 will always be remembered for its spirit, energy, and fun times.
