The late starting date of September 9th quickly plunged us headlong into activities as we realized the limited number of home football games and that there were only two short weeks until Homecoming. Although it was rushed, our exuberance car- ried us through that first week, and also the rest of the year, making alot of fun times and many memo- ries. We took an active interest in politics this year by campaigning for the bond issue to get our new gym, which is scheduled to be finished in January, 1989. There were many other changes noitced this year within the school, such as the white walls, blue lockers, new carpeting, and the clock put on the second floor of the annex. The whole year just seemed to fly, but it was filled with fun, friends, good times and most of all. High Energy. 1. Dana and Hauns welcome you to another year! 2. The students of VHS made Home- coming 1987 a success despite the late starting date and early football schedule. Homecoming week was September 20-25, only a week and half into the school year. Nevertheless, we made it worthwhile. On Monday, we wore all the blue and white we could find for Blue Pride Day and at lunch we tried to Pin the Tail on the Devil. After attempts by many, Bonnie Hill had the closest tail. Tuesday, VHS traveled back in time to the six- ties for Hippie Day . The polyes- ter was dragged out and there was even a peace movement held on the 3rd floor hallway. The noon activity was a cracker-eat- ing-whistling relay and Jennifer Moeller ran away with the race. On Wednesday, summer clothes were worn for the last time this year as Virginia students went Back to the Beach . The lunch- time events reflected the theme with: Guys Sexy Legs and Bub- ble Blowing contests. Darrin Cobb and John McDonald tied for the biggest bubble. Winners of the legs contest were: Kyle John- son, most athletic; Jesse Miller and Dan Skinner, sexiest; Brian Tanttu. harriest; and Joe Richard, least harriest. Thursday was a blessing for many tired people since they were allowed to “wake up and go for Pajama Day . That noon, the team of John McDonald, Tom Squires, Kathy Maki and Chris Johnson won the relay race in which they put on. took off and exchanged winter clothes. Friday and Coro- nation finally came and students dressed their best. Carnations were delivered first hour to friends , sweethearts , and the secretly admired , providing a little disruption before the as- sembly 3rd hour. VHS rocked to the sounds of Private Property before the Royal Court, consist- ing of Tricia Koski, Kathy Maki, Ta- bitha Mock, Kim Picek, Darrin Cobb, Chris Heine, Jesse Miller, and Chad Pajari was presented Emcees Kara Tomazin and Marsh Johnson ended the suspense by crowning Queen Kathy Maki and King Jesse Miller. After school, we showed our pride in the annual parade down Chestnut Street. The VHS band marched and there were several float entries, but in the end. the town merchants picked the A Cappella and Orchestra floats for first place and the Mixed Choir float for second place. The pa- rade ended with the candidates and King and Queen riding in convertibles donated for use by area car dealers. Homecoming ended with a high- energy football game against the Hermantown Hawks. The VHS Marching Blues and front units put on their usual outstanding half- time show at which the Royal Court was introduced to the crowd. Although the final score of the game was 7-0 in the Hawks favor, VHS spirit never died. After, most of the student body could be found jammin' to Doc and the Surgeons at the Miners'. Home- coming Week 1987 will always be remembered for its spirit, energy, and fun times. TURNABOUT 1987 Stand By Me Turnabout 1987 will long be remembered because of the date, Saturday, the 31st of October. HALLOWEEN. Despite the loud protests, the date could not be changed, and there was some specula- tion that participation would suffer, and thaf Turnabout shouldn't have been held at all. Nevertheless, when the eventful evening finally arrived, Halloween had al- most been forgotten among the sharp- dressed crowd. The dance had an extra- special touch added to its theme. As the couples swayed to Stand By Me, the vel- vet tones of Fred Tibayan created mag- ic. The gym itself was transformed by bur- gundy. pink, and silver baloons, stream- ers, and hearts. Joe and the Broz pro- vided the music, excellent and energetic renditions of popular songs, and the night flew by. Individual pictures were taken by Me Kenna. By the end of the night. VHS students realized that in spite of their mis- givings over the dance, it had turned out to be quite a success. 1. Mary thinks Brian makes a good seat. 2. Nik is hiding behind Brian. 3. Queen Janet Mohney With the great rash of School Spir- it that infected VHS students this year. Snow Week was a smash- ing success. Although held during a four-day week, it did not suffer. Decorating was completed by junior and senior high volunteers. Everyone came to school to find some exciting changes in tradi- tion. The coronation assembly was on Tuesday instead of the traditional Friday allowing the king and queen to “reign over the week's events. The Royalty ceremony began with emcees Eric Luoma and Jennifer Moeller introducing the Jr High candi- dates. Mr, Frandsen then gave an inspiring oratory about school pride and the importance of ac- tivities. Homecoming Royalty, Jesse Miller and Kathy Maki, intro- duced the Sr. High candidates: Sara Aase, Marshall Johnson, Lora Kukkonen, David Miller, Janet Mohney, Dan Skinner, Jodi Ma- kela and Brian Koski. For enter- tainment, Pam Mehle sang a solo and Joel Anderson tickled the ivory keys. The suspense was high as Janet Mohney and David Miller were crowned 1988 Snow King and Queen. With coronation tak- ing place on Tuesday, it was the traditional dress up day. During lunch, many students tested their aim at the granny shot contest with Sandy Zupetz and Fred Ti- bayan winning. Wednesday, ev- eryone wore old clothes and brought their markers for Auto- graph Day, as graffitti was the fashion of the day. The noon ac- tivity on Wednesday was the bananna eating contest. Martin Nooter won this hilarious contest by eating 3 banannas the fastest. Another tradition was broken on Wednesday. For the first time in many years, the senior class did not win the annual volleyball game. The game created much controversy due to the unorga- nized manner in which it was played. The Sophmores walked away the winners, only to be de- feated by the faculty on Friday. Thursday the school was overrun 1 Juga knows Blue Pride is school wide 2. Kendra the kindergardner 3. The noon event kept with the theme of the day as many students tried to fit themselves on a tricycle for the tricycle races. The two successful tricyclers were Lori Phillips and Shane Bakaric. Friday spirit was at an all time high at VHS for Blue and White day. The noon activity was another old favorite. The Izzy Dizzy Race. The winning team consisted of Lynn Bakaric, Natalie Kokal, Chris Heine and Tricia Koski. Later, the most energetic pep as- sembly in history took place as the band, “Point Blank”, played prior to the Soph. Jr. girls per- forming their “rap song dedi- cated to our basketball team. The cheerleaders also had their fun with the team playing “Guess Which Cheerleader Kissed You (Aw, Mom!). The excitement car- ried on throughout the night's basketball game and dance fea- turing the ever-popular “Doc and the Surgeons. 15 1988 marked the third annual Battle of the Bands -that drew the largest crowd yet and earned big bucks for the student council fund. On Thursday, Febru- ary 11 at 7:30 p.m.. the bands were ready to let loose. Student council president Brendon Etter emceed and covered for minor delays. The event was finally kicked off with the only all-female band. Out of Hand, who per- formed Hazy Shade of Winter like true Bangles and shook the house with R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. Next iollowed the Floor- mats. Back again and twice as obnoxious, their renditions of Then I Kissed Her and ”Mony Mony were wild, wild! Following the 'Mats with a flashy, polished show was Night and Day, also do- ing Mony Mony and Never Take the Place of Your Man. Ke- vin Freckle and Joel Anderson jammed on a guitar keyboard duet that highlighted Your Man. The winning act was no- frills, straight-jammin' Point Blank that drew its kick from Hi-C. The band warmed up the crowd with Hurts So Good and then de- railed them with Crazy Train. (They didn't need a stage show with a laugh like Phred's.) The final act. Private Property, combined talented, seasoned veterans of previous Battles. They cranked out Cold Gin and Wildflower — with Tony Seaman on vocals- to wrap up the contest. Thanks are in order for all behind-the- scenes people whose help in run- ning a smooth show was both needed and appreciated. v □ ; ■ • i Ii: ROCK THE HOUSE! 1987 CHOIR VARIETY SHOW A SALUTE TO THE 60'S Every year, the Mixed and A Cappella Choirs put on a musical production for the public. They worked together with faculty advisor. Mrs. Krause, during their study halls and before the Prom, which was on Satur- day, May 2nd, to put together a gala affair. The gym was decorated in turquoise, white and silver streamers and balloons, and a silver rose was placed on each table. The theme was Love Comes Walking In from of Van Halen's 5150 album. The band was Cephas, a group of college students from the cities, who played many of the popular songs. And for the first time in years, a Grand March was held across the stage in the auditorium. Emcee for the march was Fred Tibayan and punch was served by Dawn Schlotec and Katie Roche. The Prom was chaperoned by Mr. 8c Mrs. Krause, Mr. 8c Mrs. Ferkul, and Mr. 8c Mrs. Skalko. As the night went on and the ceiling came down, a terrific time was had by all. 1. Erik Matala says. See, my teeth match my Tux! 2. Janet Mohney Jeff Lackner march. 3. While their main projects are planning Homecoming, Snow Week, and Prom, this is not the extent of their work. The council meets every two weeks to discuss new projects, ideas, and problems within the school. Twenty-five students repre- senting the three grades make up the group and Mr. Kokal is the advi- sor. Without the Student Council, our school would have a tough time trying to reflect student views and the changing times. Thanks, guys! Council Officers: Pres.: Brendon Et- ter. Vice Pres. LETTER CLUB The VHS Letterclub is an organization of all students who have earned a let- ter in an extra curricular activity. Their main purpose has been to plan the Turnabout dance. This year, however, an effort was made to make Letter- club an active group. Their were a few questions that dealt with what activi- ties should earn a letter that weren't considered when the club was formed about forty years ago. Efforts were be- gun to modernize the rules and qualifi- cations, in order to eliminate confusion in coming years. The advisors, Mrs. Wit- ty and Mr. Froehlingsdorf, hope to see the Letterclub become the'' group to be a member of in the near future. Dan Skinner, Paul Blaeser, and Mike Jarmer were this year's officers. TW-ABOUT 1. Bottom L to R: Danae P„ Allison R. Wendy G.. Kathy M . Janet M.. Jody P. Therese W . Dana C.. Laura M . They are responsible for ar- ranging the stays of foreign stu- dents with local families, and sending VHS students to other countries. VHS typically hosts about three to five students a year. This year, there are two stu- dents from West Germany, Marc Ludwig and Nik Ronning. one from Switzerland, Daniela Giussani; and one from Japan, Yuji Uesugi. Away on a year program in Chile was Julie Hammerschmidt, who returned in February to complete her Senior year. This year, ten students, eight Seniors and two Juniors, participated in a special program which included a day in colonial Williamsburg. While in D.C., we visited Congressman Oberstar and Senatators Durenburger and Boschwitz. Our visit with Sen. Boschwitz was most enlightening as he introduced us to a Who's Who” in the Senate. Aside from politics and sight-see- ing, we had a great time socializing with students from Florida, Tennessee, Califor- nia, Kansas, Massachusetts, and Illinois at a dinner theater, a banquet, and a dance. The two teams of four members and one alternate each competed in preliminary rounds with 43 other teams. They were both around the top with the completion of these rounds with the first 9 teams going on to regional competition. Using some quick wit and even quick reflexes, both teams could have a good shot to advance to the state tournament. The entire Knowledge Bowl team is divided into two smaller groups, Virginia 1 and Virgina 2. and they compete separately at all meets. Virginia 1 consists of Pete Severson, Alison Caulfield. Jason Hagolin, Fred Tibayan. and Jennifer Tiemens. They were lead by re- turning editor Chris Johnson and advi- sor Mr Tom Miller. The staff was very new. there were only four returning seniors to show the new members everything they needed to know. Staff members also attended seminars held by Josten's to gain new ideas to put to use in this book and those to come. Since it resumed produc- tion in the '86-'87 school year, the paper has been very successful. The Star had much more partici- pation from many talented writ- ers at VHS. The articles ranged from the noteworthy editorials, to the wit and humor of VHS's own Andy Rooney philosopher Eric Krenze who submitted many ex- cellent artices on the lighter side of life at VHS. The staff worked hard along with their advisor Mr. Zavodnik to meet the many deadlines of putting out a weekly paper which is enjoyed by all. 2. Kendra smiles at the thought of another assignment. 3. They were lead by advisors Mrs. Kathy Ko- bensky and Mr. Darren An- derson. Their goal is not to tell kids not to drink — just not to drink and drive. 1. Row 1: Mandy Vandervort. The rest of the year was spent in practice-time for concerts. UMD Honor Band, competitions, assemblies, and Senior Commencement. And of course, the band's loyalty and school spirit backed up players at many sports events. The Blues' contributions to the school are in- valuable. and this hard-working organization does not receive nearly the credit and recognition they de- serve. Let's hear a cheer for the band. As hard to believe as it may seem, the VHS Orchestra is not the nerd organization of the school. Each member of the group is a unique individual whose personality contributes to the Orchestra's wealth of creativity. We have worked hard to retain our high standards. The Orchestra plays three to four concerts a year, and we were proud, once again, to play for Senior Commencement, with a few band mem- bers joining us for that honor. The reward for our hard practice finally comes with the annual trip to the Metro Area. The Orchestra float also tied for first place with the A Cappella in this year's Homecoming Parade. This year and beyond, the Orchestra will continue to be a great musical asset to VHS. 35 Row 1: Pam Mehle. Alison Caulfield. Lori Phillips. Jennifer McKenna. Karen Swearingen. Catherine Clark. In addition to their concerts and spring tour, they put on a Variety Show, constructed a first-prize Homecoming float, and held many fund-raisers. These included the Vari- ety Show, fruit sale and delivery, candy sale, and Bingo. Finally, they recorded the results of their successful year onto a combined Mixed and A Cappella record. 36 CHOIRS It was another successful year for the Mixed Choir! Under the dedi- cated direction of Mr. Groves, this exceptional group of soph- mores and juniors took part in the Variety Show and the many choir concerts, and traveled in the spring to perform for other schools. Together with the A Cappella Choir they raised mon- ey by selling candy and fruit. They also won second prize with their float in the Homecoming parade. FLAG CORPS The VHS Flag Corps, twirling its very visible blue and white flags, can be seen every year at many hockey, basketball, and football games, and in the Homecoming field show. Under the leadership of co-captains Jessica Bateman and Danae Peterson, this year's corps again showed up at the school by 7:30 on cold mornings to perfect routines. They always work hard to put on a good show, and the practice pays off. Summers find the Flag members marching with the Band around the streets of Virginia and in pa- rades. Then every fall, new mem- bers, chosen from spring tryouts, replace the old and the tradition is carried on. May the Flags for- ever wave their banners high! 1. They have alot of fun and do a good job performing at the football, basketball, and hockey games. They also carry the Vir- ginia shields in the marching band during the summer. They have a large squad consisting of sixteen girls; three seniors, four juniors, five sophomores, and four freshmen. The girls have a great time sup- porting our teams. Co- captains Jody Yarick and Therese Whalen taught routines to the Rifles a few members at a time, until the newest girls felt confi- dent with them. Marching tunes work best for the Ri- fles' routines, since the corps originated as a part of marching band, and practices with them ev- ery summer for parade performances. Once again, the Rifles made their difficult skill look easy and pleased many crowds. Good luck with future corps. What the crowd doesn't see are the many hours of prac- tice behind the glamour. Majorettes generally be- gin twirling at very young ages, and the complex routines they execute are the result of long training and experience. Besides batons, the girls twirl hoops, flags, and the famous flaming batons. They can also be seen every summer doing their kicks and tossing their ba- tons at parades in the marching band. Keep up the good work and keep smiling. Majorettes! 41 VHS CHEERLEADERS Left column Laura Davis. Jennifer Baribeau. Wendy Wavernack. Michelle Kislia. Michelle Allen. Kathy Lee Center Kim Picek. Despite everything, though, they carried on. The girls were divided into the usual fall and winter sport squads. They had some outstanding cheers and routines as well as thou- sands of colorful signs to decorate the games and pep rallies. The club received many enthusiastic members who came up with some well-received fund-raisers and community pro- jects. The club sponsored an Ugly Teacher Contest” in which pictures of faculty making faces were dis- played The student body then vot- ed for the ugliest” by putting mon- ey in that teacher's slot, and Mr. So- mero ran away with the award. For a service project, members got up early two weekday mornings to serve breakfast at six a.m. for the Special Olympics. They suffered two disappointing losses to Eveleth-Gilbert in the first game of the season (6-0) and Hermantown for Homecoming (7-0), but defeated four teams: International Falls (14-8), Proctor (7-0), Duluth Marshall (35-0), and Two Harbors (27-6). The Blue Devils major strength is their defense. We have the 1 defense in the Conference, only giving up 25 points. The Blue Devils, led by Senior captains Mark Fabish and Kyle Johnson, would like to thank, on behalf of the team, the fans for the best support ever and the coaches, Frank Fabish, Rick Erick- son, and Jocko Thompson, for a great season. u «r Qf T nanetoiTfosL O 1 For anyone who walked by the gym after school this fall, the sounds of running and moans from those doing sit- ups and push-ups could be heard coming from one of the youngest and shortest VHS Volleyball teams ever. Coach Frank Fabish The Girls' Basketball team was young but confident in 1988. Ten Sophomores and Juniors had to fill legend Liz Garni's shoes, and they did. There were no players who monopolized the starting positions, so by the end of the season, the team was able to play very well together. The girls had big wins over Duluth Central and International Falls in all-conference games during the season. They also had three wins over Duluth East, Mountain Iron-Buhl, and Hibbing to wrap up the year with a 10-12 record. Leslie Skarich and Jessica Bateman were captains of a squad that is sure to be a returning whirlwind next year. Look out for these Devils! o to GO 52 The 1987 Girls' Swim Team, under the leadership of Coach Hafdahl, did not have many girls in it, but through hard work and an unbelievable desire to win, the team cooperated to have one of the best seasons ever. Tri-cap- tains Viki Carlson, Virginia Roivanen, and Megan Dunlap led the team to many victories. These included beat- ing Eveleth by one point and also de- feating the powerful arch-rival Hibbing, a feat which has not been accom- plished in five years. Three school re- cords were broken during the season in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and 400 freestyle relay. Virginia sent four swimmers to state this year. Viki Carl- son, Virginia Roivanen, Andrea Urbiha, and Dawn Schlotec qualified in the 400 freestyle relay. Dawn Schlotec also went in the 100 butterfly and set a new Region Record. Eigth-grader Jen- ny Koski qualified for state in the diving competition. The victories were not the only thing that made this season a memorable one. This original group of young men is well-known for its water rituals, traditions, and cheers that make thier meets fun to watch. This sense of team unity is the key to excellence in a sport made mostly of individual events. The swimmers practiced hard and swam well. (At this writing, the 200 individual medley relay - H. Froehlingsdorf, P. Etter, G. Patrick E. Luoma - is sited for the State competition). The team owes much of thier talent to Coaches Joe Froehlings- dorf and Ken Curry, as well as team captains. Hauns Froehlingsdorf, Erik Matala, and Chris Stall were the captains this year and also the only Seniors of a team made mostly of Juniors. They look for an outstanding team next season. The strength of so many returning swimmers and divers is expected to render next year's team undefeated! S3 HOCKEY The VHS Hockey team had a re- spectable season in 1988. Senior captain Chris Heine and co-cap- tains Darrin Cobb and Scott Stanaway led the team through some exciting games. After losing to Aurora and Eveleth, the Devils avenged the losses to both teams, and also handed the Hibbing Blue- jackets defeat. Coach Hendrickson even gave some of the rookies ice time this year-Freshmen G. Plot- nik, Joe Tamminen, R. Peterson, and B. Robinson, as well as Junior goalie Shane Bakaric. They already have good team spirit, and with experience, the gymnasts are sure to have good careers to look forward to. CO L to R: Justin Peterson, Brian Koski, Chad Pajari, Fred Stauber. 56 VHS Boys' Tennis had few losses in 1987. Doing especially well were Dean Edstrom and Randy Babiracki from last year's graduating class in the doubles competition. Their record took them to their second State tournament in that category. There were no captains of the team, made up of many returning players. Players lost besides Edstrom and Babiracki were: Joe Boyer, ex- change student Oliver Petz, Bill Lund- berg, and Mike Lilya. Returning are: Chad Pajari, Brian Koski, Erik Matala, Jim Boitz, Paul Blaeser, Kevin Koski, Tony Maturi, Jason Hasselius, and Fred Stauber. Captains for 1988 tennis are Chad Pajari and Brian Koski. This year's 1987 Blue Devil tennis team reached a goal that has not been accom- plished since 1981 Led by co-captians Julie McBride and Maria Strand, this year's team posted an impressive 16-6 record. Three of the team's defeats came from Duluth East who placed second in the state. The 14 players on this team proved to themselves how much thay could improve with dedica- tion and hard work. This hard work and dedi- cation earned the team a Region-Runnerllp trophy at this year's Region Tournament. Virginia also had very impressive individual achievements: freshman Tracy Erickson placed third in the Regional Individual Tour- nament and Jen Moeller and Julie McBride placed fourth. Sandy Zupetz also had a very successful season, compiling a 17-5 in- dividual record during the year. Graduating no Seniors, this squad would like to reach the State Tournament next year and avenge their losses to Duluth East. ] 1. The girls had no trouble adjusting to the new circumstances; Ml-B run- ners added points and support to the VHS team. Girls' track had a very good season overall and many of the members advanced to regions. The guys golf at about fourteen meets in the region before winding up the season in June. 1987 also marked the start of a girls' team that so far has had only girls from Ml-B as members. This year's guys' team was made up only of members Scott Stanaway, Paul Paoletti, Mike Manion, Ryan Peterson, Rob Aaronen, and Steve Fingeroos, but they nev- ertheless had a good season in 1987. Paul Paoletti stood out with an incredible game, winning the region tournament by two strokes, and placing fifteenth in the state competition, his second state meet since his Sophomore year. The golfers finished third in the region and in the Iron Range Conference, and took second place in the East Range Conference, losing first place by just half a point. Steve Fingeroos finished a respetable fourth place in the East Range Conference. 62 The VHS Wrestlers, com- bined with a few neighbor- ing schools, were a strong team in 1988. Wrestling tra- ditionally makes all Senior members captains, there were eleven Seniors on this year's team The wrestlers had tough practices and stuck to their diets in order to meet their weight class requirements. All the hard work paid off as three quali- fied for the State tourna- ment. Looking back, it seemed at times that the Senior year was a dream that would never become reality. Graduation was the last thing on the minds of rookie Sophomores. We were too busy learning about our new responsibilities and fitting in with upperclassmen to give a thought to the future. As Juniors, we grew restless at times with the boring school- day routine and the same, too-familiar faces. We waited. At last, September 9,1987 arrived, the first day of our Senior year. We expected this year to be the most exciting, as everyone had told us it would be, and we weren't disap- pointed. We grew closer as a class than we had been before, the Senior bond was a special thing. Teachers also seemed to treat us with more respect. Finally, our friends were voted Homecoming and Snow Week royalty. We handed out Senior pictures to our friends and wrote wills in our own Senior booklets. The Senior banquet, baccalaure- ate, party, and the Prom were held in our honor. Never had we gotten so much recognition and had as much fun. We all regretted to see it end so soon, as we realized that there could never be another Senior year for us. As we left VHS, we promised to reach for the stars and to never forget how important our class and its memories will remain in our lives. Senior Class Officers: President. Hi, my name is Marc. I left my hometown Hamburg, West Germany to figure out what life is in this big America. It turned out that this was a really great year and a great experience. I have really enjoyed snowmobiling, 3-wheeling, fishing, hunting, skiing, snow shoveling and swimming on our team, I have to thank many people, who were so nice and friendly to me over the duration of this year: First of all there is, of course, my fantastic family, the Rovianens with the best sisters I’ve ever had (Virginia Geor- gena). I have to mention the Tibayan Family and my buddy Jean-Paul Emery as special friends. I give a special thanks to Mrs. Salmi, who provided me with wonderful attention in her Senior Social Class. Marc Ludwig 2072 Klien Hansdorf Dorfntrasse 32 West Germany Hi! I am Dany, a YFU exchange student from Switzer- land. Our school is very different from here. You are done at the age of fifteen years old and we have not high school. Also, we have not so hurry over time, it's more relaxed. Virginia is quite different and maybe this is the reason that I like here. I like alot my host family and the other exchange students and everybody in school. I would like to say thanks to everybody for be so nice to me and my teachers who have been al- ways so patient to me. A special greetings to the girls of the Swimming team and to Mr. Hafdahl. I have had a great time with you! Thanks also to my area rep. Karen Grahovak and YFU for making this year one of the best of my life. I think will be hard for me to say goodbye when I'll have to leave. Write to me, every- body! Ciao! Daniela Giussani V. San Gottardo 6799 Chiggiogna (Ticino) 004194 38. 17.65 Switzerland Hallo Leute, (people) I'm Nik Ronning from West Ger- many. From my first day of school you all made me feel so welcome, I had no problems making friends. In the fall I joined cross-country'' (outdoor survival train- ing) and in spring I plan to join baseball. I enjoyed watching games and giving musical support to the band (Flutes Forever!). I was surprised how many ac- tivities here are connected with the school. I had lots of fun with them, especially the Battle of the Bands ( Wake me. Shake me ). I enjoyed very much being a part of American Life -what am I going to do without Alf? I had an unforgettable time in Virginia and at VHS. A big thank you to my great family, the Aase's, and to all my friends, teachers, and all the others I met and talked to. Maybe you could drop by sometime or just write me a letter. Nikolaus Ronning Zur Friedrichshohe 7 7750 Konstanz West Germany FRIENDS FOREVER Hi! My name is Yuji from Japan. I come here to meet new people, to travel internationally, and for new and fun experience. I've been always cur- ious about America and I think I get good experience living with family. People in Virginia have been excellent. Especially Football and Basketball teams that were great to play in. I love sports. School here is very different from mine — I say thank you to teachers who helped me to understand. I would also like to thank my excellent family, the Grahovaks. I have been very welcomed here, ex- cept the cold weather (-70 F wind chills?!!) Where I live is very warm. Come look me up. You'll be welcome any time. MN S5792 1210) 74 1 -0091 Editor's Note: Well, another yearbook is finished and it wfl be my last, so there are many people I would like to thank who helped make this book possi- ble First of all I would like to say a big Thonk You to the 1988 Rohian staff. They did a fantastic job of designing pages or whatever else we asked of them They were a lot of fun to work with and they made my job alot easier this year. Secondly, I want to thank Mr. Miller for all his help in the last two years. There are so many people I should thank who were not staff members, but did a lot of the important little things like shooting pictures, writing copy, and offering many terrific Ideas to use in the book, but, since there is such limited space I cannot begin to list everyone. Their help is greatly appreciated Another thanx is in order for Sara A.. Tara V.. and Laura A. for all their over- time help on the nights before deadlines (1100, time to go home!) The Sr. High English teach- ers also deserve a big Thanx for being so cooperative about handing things out to the stu- dents for us Well, this is beginning to sound like I've won an acade- my award, so I'll just say 1 last Thank You to everyone else who helped get this book out. It has been a long, hard road over the last two years. Would I do it over again? NO! But I don't regret it. It was alot of long hours, but they were I think they were well spent putting together something that we will all cherish in years to come. I wish Mr Miller and future Rohian staffs the best of luck. 1988 ROHIAN STAFF: Advisor: Mr Tom Miller Editor: Christine Johnson Copy Editor Sara Aase Copy Asst: Bonnie Hill Michele Niemi Business Mar: Melissa Maki Photography: Scott Clark Page Designers: Tara VanSoest Jody Yarick Dawn Schlotec Marc Westerbur Corrine Kruse Trisha Sundquist Michelle Nelson Hauns Froehlingsdorf ►
