On Monday everyone was laid back and dressed up in their cool” clothes; at noon we par- ticipated in Izzy Dizzy. Tues- day was Circus Day and every- one painted their face. Wednesday was class color day with the Seniors dressed in blue. Juniors in red, and Sopho- mores in green. Thursday set off a 'bang' as Gangster day; with co-ed piggy back races at noon. Friday was the Tradition- al Dress your Best. At the cor- nation assembly Karen Mohney and Brian Maki were crowned Homecoming Queen and King. The week came to an end when the mighty Blue Devils defeat- ed the International Falls Bron- cos 8-0. Of course who could forget the spectacular half- time field show performed by the Virginia Marching Blues. 17 Turnabout With A Real 'Turnabout This year's Turnabout was quite different. After many years of fighting and complaining to get the rules changed by writing pe- titions, begging the principal, and bringing it up to the Student Council to allow girls to ask out of town guys. Over 110 couples attended the dance and boo- gied down to the sound of Doc and the Surgeons . The night was a complete success and it was a Turnabout to remember. I. In the background. The girls gym was disguised with streamers in shades of blue and silver to set a dreamy atmosphere. To add to the theme, a pond near the entrance contained live goldfish. Over 100 couples danced to the sound of Redd Ryder”, whose light show added to the fun. The evening was a great success and ended with one re- maining question: What happened to the goldfish? I. We do. We're the students who work hard both in school and in activities such as building a prize winning float, putting on Prom, and narticipating in sports. We’re the students who make everything we do different and exciting. We are a very special class that has grown closer every year. We re not just a class of students-we’re a class of friends. It seems like yesterday when we were little seventh graders strug- gling to get that stupid locker open or wondering around looking for our classes. Those four years between 7th and 12th grade really fly by. All of a sudden you’re on top. Everything changes — there are more responsibilities to handle and impor- tant decisions to make. There are so many things to do m that one year before gradu- ation day comes. Time keeps flying by .. . we don't want to miss anything! We have built many special friendships over the years. It is not unusual to see Ewen's Stadium, the Miners, or the Gym filled with loyal fans to cheer the Blue Devils on. Vir- ginia has many fine athletes in every sport whether it’s track, tennis, hockey, or football. 1985- 86 has proved to be an awesome athletic year for VHS. The 1985-86 Blue Devil Foot- ball team had a record break- ing season. They won the con- ference title for the second consecutive year, unheard of for a Blue Devil team playing on the gridiron. The team, led by captains Tom Metsa, Pat McHugh, Brian Maki and Brian Kislia, was one of the best teams in years. The Blue Devil seniors would like to pass on their talents to the juniors, and wish them the best of luck next year!! 70 Front row (hr): Bob Peterson. Dan Haege. Captain Brian Maki. Lane Johnson. There are field events which include the pole vaults, highjump. and long Jump along with shotputting and the discus. These events aren’t as exciting as the race, but they all need the same support from the crowd and hours of work from the ath- lete racing, jumping, or throw- ing. The track team has many talented athletes on the track and on the field. They had a very good 1986 year and look forward to a good season next year. Whenever fans attend sporting events, they hear the VHS pep band raising crowd spirits and pepping up the teams. The annual homecoming show is planned by Mr. Vukmanich, the director. The band spends most of their Class time from the start of the school year until homecoming learning their moves. After homecoming, the band gets ready for their 3 concerts. There are special music events brought out the year such as State Contest, UMD Honor Band, All-State Band, and jazz band. Virginia has much musical tal- ent and should be proud of its pro- gram. After the resignation of second- year conductor Clare Goossens, the orchestra welcomed Mark Eskola into the position. The or- chestra participated in a com- bined concert with Eveleth, the 6th annual Valentine’s Concert, as well as a spring concert. Thanks to the enthusiasm and excellent direction of Mr. Es- kola, the orchestra has once again become a growing organi- zation. % Twirling their flags, hoops, ba- tons, or fire batons, you can see these talented girls throughout the year during halftime at many football, hockey, and basketball games. This is the second year with the team’s new coach Mrs. Koski. In just one year. Virginia has doubled the number of speech meets that it attends. This season we attended eight invitationals, subregions, and re- gions. Virginia team members compete in the categories of Original and Non-Original Ora- tories, Humerous Interpretation, Drama, Poetry. Prose. Storytell- ing, and Extemporaneous Speak- ing. The team takes up most Sat- urdays for most of the meets. Although this isn't the easiest activity the fun, excitement, and of course the benefits, far outweigh the long hours of prac- tice and preparation. To The Top What?l The National Football League in Vir- ginia? Not N.F.L. stands for National Forensic League. It’s an honorary speech and debate league that you can join after receiving a certain number of speaking points. There are three annual get togethers-Fall Spring Con- gress which is a mock legislature, and the winter speech tournament. In each meet speakers can earn points to be eligible for nationals. 103 National Honor Society The National Honor Society, advised by Mr. Como, Consists of 10 seniors. Those in it must have a grade point average of 3.4 and be involved with school and community activities. The purpose of this organization is to cre- ate enthusiasm for Scholarship, pro- mote leadership, and develope char- acter in the students of our school. Members are: Denise Berger, Barb Berlin, Mike Callister, Sonja Carls- gaard, Shelley Heinrich, Mary Marcel- la, Lisa Maturi, Dan Rautio, Jack Swearingen, Tom Teasek. This close-up stuff see ms very governmental but it 's not all work. Close-up is an organization of students who wish to see our nations government up close. By selling raffle tickets, sponsoring dances, and peddling case afer case of M M's. these students earn part of their way to Washington. D.C. During the week spent at the nation's capitol. the kids attend seminars dealing in traction. Of course Virginia pupils aren't the only people there. Students from all over the nation come together with a common theme. A thirst for knowledge of our country. 107 This year’s Student Council has been an ex- tremely busy one. Due to the hard work of its members and the Student Body, it planned Homecoming. Snow Week, the class and fac- ulty volleyball game, and a computer match up for the junior and senior high. There are three rounds, two individual and one team in which to compete. At the end of the end of the year, awards are given to the top ten scorers in the region, top scorer on each team and the three highest scoring teams. The high- est scoring team goes on to the State Meet. Math League members are not nerds” contrary to belief. It is a priviledge and honor to be a member of this scholastic club. Special thanks to my patient host family, the Whalens. Now let 's give it a shot, the chances that I'll survive this freezing winter are not too high. If I do. The event had five bands performing. They were Pond Scum. Debbie and the Destroyers, Spare Parts. Tic and the Bugs, and Jimmy B. and the White Boys. Each group got to perform in front of the student body, which, in turn, voted for the band they wanted to play for Virginia’s Snow Week. The votes were counted, and the winner was Jimmy B. and the White Boys. i m Sophomores Aase, Sara — 10—39 Aho. And now we know. This year tvf knew why our past editors yelled and screamed, jumped for joy. and gushed about getting the big E award. This year we found out. If you look hard and close you will still see our hfojfTour sweat. and our tears. But most of all. you will see our care. We wanted this to be the best yearbook ever to come out of Virginia. As you can see there were a lot of new. fresh ideas. Hopefully, the trend will continue in future years. There are a few mistakes, but consider- ing our staff of 14 to represent our 50$ students) we did our best. On behalf of our staff, we'd like to thank you for supporting us. and we you enjoy the book as much as you do.
