Each day was filled with enthusiasm. One of the most exciting events was the float competition. All week the classes worked diligently to build their float. The junior class of 85” came up victorious with the slogan Ride Em Devils. Some of the other exciting activities were the Bonfire at View Point in the Sky. the egg toss, scooter races, izzy dizzy, and the annual Tug-O-War. Switzerland. In America he is involved in managing the basketball team, his studies and dancing, which he is very good at. Back at home, he played soccer, fences, wind surfs, skies and is a basset for a local band. Peter's full name is Hans Peter Lukke Holm. He's from Odense. Denmark. As for American interests they differ from his country's activities. There, they disco, play handball, badminton, soccer and rugby. Here he enjoys watching TV and listening to the radio. Eric Lechien's stoomping grounds are in Ohain. Belgium. At VHS he is very active. He was on the Varsity football team, in Close-up. and hopes to be on the tennis team. Eric tries to be in everything that involves his interests. In Belgium he enjoys different kinds of entertainment, music, dancing, movies, and tennis. Teaching is a difficult profession. Not all who enter can live up to its demands. One who did. however, was Miss Moroni, who taught for twenty-seven years in the Virginia School system. And. suddenly, on Thanksgiving Day. 1983. we were shocked when we heard of her death. Mr. Bill Somero. a teacher in the VHS Chemistry Department, best summarized what a lot of us were thinking when he said. You know, it s the end of an institution.' Twenty-seven years in a school system is a long time to serve in this day and age. People say that dedication and commitment are ideals that are lacking in our schools today. These people did not know Theresa Moroni. Dedication was not something she was hoping to achieve: it was a way of life. She didn't miss school. Her classes were always prepared. No matter what the weather, she was always there — and usually one of the first one to arrive. (You could always hear her voice echoing down the hall.) And during the last eleven years of her life, she had to work with a handicap — the effects of the first debilitating stroke, suffered in 1972. But this didn’t keep her from moving her classroom last spring from the Roosevelt Building, across the street to the Technical Building, and up four flights of stairs when Virginia consolidated its system. And all without complaint, for Theresa wanted to carry her share of the load. Now isn't that dedication? And what about commitment? What did Miss Moroni teach? Yes. she taught health, phy. ed.. and drivers’ education. But — besides that — besides the classroom stuff — what did Miss Moroni teach? Values! She taught values! When we were wrong, she told us. When we were right, she praised and encouraged us. How many of us know about all the encouraging notes she wrote to many of our students? What value does that teach us? How many times did she do something for us. and never told anybody, and never received anything in return? What does that tell us about her? It tells us that she is a teacher, a teacher committed to her job. a teacher committed to the ideals of her profession. And as we dedicate this yearbook to her. we reflect: Those we hold most dear Never truly leave us. They live on. They live on in the kindness they showed. The comfort they shared. And the love they brought into our lives. So let it be with Miss Moronil Senior Index Aho. Deanna Rohian 11.12 Anderson. Kirk Anderson. Kristen Anderson. Lynn Andrews. Their two toughest opponents for the 1983 season were the Hibbing Bluejackets and the Grand Rapids Indians. Their only losses during the year were to these two competitors. The Regional 7AA Tournament went quite well. The Devils blanked Ely 5-0. but were downed by Grand Rapids in second round play. Coach Rennet Rloomquist. with help from Captain Scott Farden. did a fine job this year. Next year's team still has alot of depth with five juniors and three seniors returning. Determination is in their eyes and they are looking for a birth in the 1984 Minnesota State High School League Tournament. 90 1. Robbie and Flaimer are getting ready for regional play. 2. The season ended on a disappointing note as the team finished third in the Region 7AA meet The only bright spots of the meet were lisa Peterson s individual victory in the girl's division to earn her fourth consecutive birth in the State Tournament, and Marc Beulke s third place finish, which also earned him a trip to Majestic Oaks Golf Course Both lisa and Marc ended their seasons with extremely disappointing showings at the State Meet, but they deserve congratulations lor getting as far as they did Hopefully the 1984 team will improve on last year's showing 1. They had numerous losses only by one run. I guess you could say that at times they just could not get it together. Steve Kivela led the team in batting while John Arbogast led the team in stolen bases. The pitching staff was led by Greg Aslakson. Bob Eilertson. and Eric Thomas. Behind the plate was a strong asset of the team. Darren Maturi, who will be returning this year. The outfield was composed of Tim Koski. John Arbogast. and Mark Lundberg. At second base. Todd Halunen put in a fine effort and over at first. Craig Tietz also did a marvelous job. All in all. the team didn’t do that bad. but they are hoping to improve this up-coming season.
