O that the natlons of the world are at war, Amerlcans are thinking of the msecurity of governments We are made to reahze that the wonderful Democracy which is ours is not to be taken for granted It was built deliberately and must be maintained in a purposeful manner There IS a new patriotism in the United States today a new understanding of our own way of life a new realization of the importance of our freedom a new desire to see that Democratic principles shall continue in this contment than that held in any other country of the world political eco- nomic social and religious freedom We believe that our coun try deserves our loyalty and we are willing to help solve her problems We understand also that true patriotism does not consist of waving banners but of sacrificing as our forefathers did for the welfare of the nation Because we feel that these ideas are those held by the student body of Virginia High School the Annual Staff of the VIRGINIAN dedrcates this book to the cause of Amencanism We believe that Americans cherish a freedom more complete
