WILLIAM SCALES CHANDLER, JR. BURLINGTON, N. C. f 1' 'Q William Scales Chandler, Jr., a true son of southern gentry, deigned to attend the Academy three years ago. Choosing to come here, giving up his true-love, Burlington, North Carolina, was no easy decision, but he answered the call, packed his luggage, and traveled north. Since that epiphany, he has established himself as an asset to the schoolg his ready wit has often provided the right touch of humor so important in prep school life. One might think being a chicken farmer would have been a detriment to Chan, but quite the contrary. There are few realms within the school to which Chan has not belonged. Academically, he is in the top quintile. Cultur- ally, Cshades of southern gentry!J, Chan is a leader. He has been chairman of the Drama Society, a fine pianist, and for two years his voice has supported the bass section of Thomas H. Gunn's traveling troubadors. Having some unused time, Chan ran cross-country for two seasons, played tennis for three, and took up soccer in his senior year. Still dissatisfied, Chan accepted the august position of lay-out editor of the Meteor, and a similar posi- tion on that excellent annual, the Vestige. But astonishingly enough, Chan has been heard on several occasions bemoaning his lack of activities. Having been provided with such a strong and diversified foundation by VES, there can be no doubt about Chan's achieving success. His college plans include Washington and Lee University, and then - law school.

Carper Cool brought with him from the mountains oi West Virginia a characteristic which has since been tagged as coolness, but it is actually his willingness to go out of his way to be friendly to everyone. Bill's easy-going nature and quick humor have won him many friends at VES. He has extended his willingness to be friendly to the opposite sex, and they have responded. Had he not already been branded with one nickname, he might easily have been called the Don Juan of VES. Bill's smooth social ability and his willingness to work led to his appointment as Dance Committee chairman last year. He has been a counselor for two years, and he was secretary-treasurer of the senior class. He has played on the Meteor and Vextige staffs. and he played a role in the Art and Drama Society's production of Billy Budd. He was so upset, however, that there was no part for a lover in Billy Budd that he hardly said a thing throughout the whole production. Bill has proven his ability in athletics by earning two varsity letters in basketball. This year he was elected co- captain of the Bishopis-fiveg he also served as treasurer of the Monogram Club. Now that Bill knows everyone at VES, he hopes to widen his scope next year by attending The University of North Carolina. WILLIAM GRADY CARPER, JR PRINCETON, W. VA.

Caldwell Cline came to us from the Land of the Mus- tangs, Myres Park, in Charlotte, North Carolina. fHe was one of three postgraduate students to enter VES in the '64- '65 year.J Caldwell came here because he felt he would have a better foundation before entering The University of North Carolina. He chose to come here, too, because here he could play basketball, something he was unable to do at Myres Park because of an operation which had forced him into retirement. He has done exceptional work at VES, and he has made his presence felt on the basketball floor, with his scoring and re-bounding. His other interests range from music to toiletries. Because of his character and good nature and friendli- ness, he has come to be thought of as an 'old-timer.' At Caro- lina, he is certain of success. CALDWELL CLINE, JR CHARLOTTE, N. C.
