♦• ,.♦• ,-♦.♦- . . . With the jungle of urban life crushing in on us from all sides and a snarl of traffic creeping down the pavement which forms the main portion of R.P.I. ' s campus, who could feel the free, silent spirit which pulsates in the veins of our college and nurtures in every one of us the will to learn, love, grow freely, and willfully improve our minds in order to throw off the shackles of archaic ignorance which burden our modern world? To the casual ob- server there is little here to see or feel: brick sidewalks speak of the past and dead ideals; asphalt parking lots speak of the present and the need to accommodate more and more of the lazy man ' s h reps frcii or s, the auto- mobile; but what the casual onlooker does not see, is the mind of the student, the hope for a better tomorrow. R.P.I, is different. Ther e are com- paratively few campuses in the country which hold their students to the narrow regimentation of an old city center. But the experience gained from living in this environment is beyond the understanding of many. Where else could you feel the bitter strictness of a senile mind, or keep daily contact with the low rent dwellings which breed pestilence, poverty and perversion? And the memories of cobblestone living: a fire up the alley which smoked out a party or two, campus elections when most of the vigorous excitement was generated by the candidates, the near miss Covington concert at Mid- Winters, the gallons of beer consumed by those with and those without proper I.D. No, our campus isn ' t beautiful — unless you are willing to open both eyes and hearts and listen to the mute voices of the past speak of their by gone glory. But we who study here, and those of us who live in the dorms, as well as those who do not, depart from R.P.I, with gifts of edu- cation which are not common to every American campus. There is an ominous rumbling deep within our school ' s foundations, a sign that the giant is awakening and soon will stand to proclaim for all to hear the wonderous attributes of our cobblestone campus, this, our R.P.I. 24 ♦ ♦
