Materially significant of the rapid rise of R. P. I. is the recent allocation of a new educational building — the first completely new edifice to be constructed for the college. Shown above is a rear elevation view of it, as planned. - ♦ ♦

• « •■• gether ivithin these covers as much of the ' ' flavor ' of our alma mater as we found possible. In doing so, of course, we used the ivhole city as a ' ' campus, and we wish to extend our sincere thanks to any and all who assisted. The Virginia Museum of Fine Art was most cordial in allowing us to photo- graph our May Court there. Mr. Robert Harrison placed his classes in Commercial Art at our disposal for creating a cover design, and Mrs. Dorothy Neelfs advertising class ' ' turned to in helping us gain that very necessary crutch called financial assistance. Mrs. Chalkley was most gracious in allowing us to use Founders ' Hall as a temporary photographic studio while class portraits were be- ing made, and various individuals, too numerous to name, offered their assistance through the use of photographs they own. The Proscript and the Richmond Times-Dispatch were equally obliging, as tvere the Col- lege office staffs. And of course, you who purchased this copy of the 1951 Wigivam assisted also. Therefore, to the many, many helping hands — thank you. We hope that the pages tvhich lie ahead will hold some particular m eaning to each of our readers. Furthermore, we will feel successful, if, several years hence, unknown to us, this volume serves in som e sm all way as a link between alumni and college, between alumni and students and, m ost important of all, between college friends.

4 • • PERSONALITIES . . . at R. P. I. are like the frosting on cake and the sparkle in snow: they give the basic ingredient — that special something. Buildings have their individual characteristics, and cities have their particular atmosphere, but, people make the buildings, and people create the atmospheres and events. All of us probably have favorite circles of friends, particular people whom we enjoy, or admire, or are amused by. Someone like Mrs. Owens, for instance, who brought a new kind of light to the dining hall — crisp curtains, varied tasty menus, softly colored walls, and music. All the dormitory girls, and any of the fellows who date them, know Mr. Bailey whose fatherly interest in the students is almost legendary now. There are always the wheels, the girl in the next seat in English class whose name you ' d like to know and soon find out, the class bore, and the habitual overcutter, not to leave out the instructors who are really human when you give them half a chance. On the following pages are all kinds of people who study or teach all sorts of things. Some you may know well; you may not have known others attended R. P. I. They are all worth knowing, however, believe it or not. We hope you find the very special ones you ' re looking for, and if you don ' t see your own face — for shame !
