Therefore, feeling that the familiarity of surroundings, the iden- tification of people, and the recollections of events are the most feas- ible connections a yearbook can offer the student body in the form of a lasting record, tve of the 1951 Wigtvam Staff have tried to bring to- - • ■• ■• « •■• gether ivithin these covers as much of the ' ' flavor ' of our alma mater as we found possible. In doing so, of course, we used the ivhole city as a ' ' campus, and we wish to extend our sincere thanks to any and all who assisted. The Virginia Museum of Fine Art was most cordial in allowing us to photo- graph our May Court there. Mr. Robert Harrison placed his classes in Commercial Art at our disposal for creating a cover design, and Mrs. Dorothy Neelfs advertising class ' ' turned to in helping us gain that very necessary crutch called financial assistance. Mrs. Chalkley was most gracious in allowing us to use Founders ' Hall as a temporary photographic studio while class portraits were be- ing made, and various individuals, too numerous to name, offered their assistance through the use of photographs they own. The Proscript and the Richmond Times-Dispatch were equally obliging, as tvere the Col- lege office staffs. And of course, you who purchased this copy of the 1951 Wigivam assisted also. Therefore, to the many, many helping hands — thank you. We hope that the pages tvhich lie ahead will hold some particular m eaning to each of our readers. Furthermore, we will feel successful, if, several years hence, unknown to us, this volume serves in som e sm all way as a link between alumni and college, between alumni and students and, m ost important of all, between college friends. Materially significant of the rapid rise of R. P. I. is the recent allocation of a new educational building — the first completely new edifice to be constructed for the college. Shown above is a rear elevation view of it, as planned. - ♦ ♦ 4 • • PERSONALITIES . . . at R. P. I. are like the frosting on cake and the sparkle in snow: they give the basic ingredient — that special something. Buildings have their individual characteristics, and cities have their particular atmosphere, but, people make the buildings, and people create the atmospheres and events. All of us probably have favorite circles of friends, particular people whom we enjoy, or admire, or are amused by. Someone like Mrs. Owens, for instance, who brought a new kind of light to the dining hall — crisp curtains, varied tasty menus, softly colored walls, and music. All the dormitory girls, and any of the fellows who date them, know Mr. Bailey whose fatherly interest in the students is almost legendary now. There are always the wheels, the girl in the next seat in English class whose name you ' d like to know and soon find out, the class bore, and the habitual overcutter, not to leave out the instructors who are really human when you give them half a chance. On the following pages are all kinds of people who study or teach all sorts of things. Some you may know well; you may not have known others attended R. P. I. They are all worth knowing, however, believe it or not. We hope you find the very special ones you ' re looking for, and if you don ' t see your own face — for shame ! ♦ -♦%•• M % ♦ ♦ ♦ • ' V ' « ♦ ♦ •TTWWiinii iiiiT ' r™- ' - Oun. 2 eaH DEAN HENRY H. HIBBS A.B., Cumberland College; A.M., Brown University Ph.D., Columbia University Beyond all doubt, no single person has been more responsible for the progressive rise of this college than Dr. Hibbs. Literally the creator of this institution, he has overcome seemingly impossible obstacles throughout the past three decades of its existence, and has successfully maneuvered it through one peril after another. Taxed by administrative duties, his appearances at the College ' s many social functions are nonetheless regular, and always welcome. • f ♦ ♦ % DR. MARGARET JOHNSON Administrative Assistant; Adviser to Women Students; Head of Department of Modern Languages A.B., Barnard College A.M. and Ph.D., Columbia University It seems unlikely that there might be a more readily recognized individual known to the entire student body at R. P. I. than Dr. Johnson. A woman of many duties, she nonetheless always has time to assist the students who drop into her office day after day. Originally a choral director at R. P. I., she has certainly been most deserving of each advancement which she has made in the administration. Oun. AduUeM JOHN E. GORDON Adviser to Men Students Assistant Professer of Chemistry B.A., M.S., Middleburg College A comparative newcomer to the ranks of administrative personalities at R. P. I., Mr. Gordon has gained the respect, admiration, and friendship of his colleagues and students rapidly. One of the youngest men to ever have held his particular position as adviser to men at R. P. I., he has proven capable, nonetheless, and it is to be hoped that he will lend his presence to our alma mater for many years to come. .. • ••♦ « ♦ ♦ ♦ jm FACULTY WILLIAM ROSS ABRAMS Instructor in Art B.F.A., Richmond Professional Institute MELVIN A. As we look around today, we find that many people have left our ranks since we began our college career in the fall of 1947. However, since then, many energetic and valuable collegians have joined us and helped to fill these missing links. Our Class, as any other freshman class, had its ups and downs in becoming an organization. But under the able leadership of our newly elected presi- dent, Edward Kelley, ours was the first class to establish an organizational constitution, which led to the eventual reorganization of the Student Government Association. After a very late activa- tion in March of ' 47, our Class went on to uphold its part in the traditional May Day festivities. Surmounting these inher ent obstacles of all young organizations, our group sponsored the first, now traditional, September Street Dance. In this year, also led by Ed Kelley, we saw the Student Government Association receive a new constituton. Ending our Sophomore year, we gave another successful Street Dance immediately preceding May Day, adding our second tradition to R. P. I. Emerging into our Junior year, and claiming the title of upper-classmen, we were capably led by Charlie Wood. In order to further class participation, Charlie inaugurated a new plan for the collection of class dues, which proved very successful. That fall, we returned to the campus the abandoned tradi- tion of Rat Week. It was during our Junior year that the Alumni Association became an actuality. We brought this year to a close by sponsoring a successful Junior-Senior Prom held at the Hotel John Marshall Roof Garden. The final year of the Class of 195 1 was begun in a world once more marked by war. But, hopeful for a peaceful solution of the world ' s differences, the Seniors continued preparing for the postgraduate world and their role in it. Instigated in the majority by members of the Senior class, there arose an Alumni Booster Club, dedi- cated to the full and complete support of the R. P. I. Alumni Association and all of its potential promise. This organization, in conjunction with the Richmond chapter of the Alumni Association, made a large and vital contribution to the first Annual Home-Coming celebration held at R. P. I. Needless to say, the Home-Coming was a huge success, and students concluded the week end with the fond hope it would not be the last Home-Coming here. Socially, the Class of 195 1 sponsored two dances for the student body and other events. A second contribution to better functioning of R. P. I. ' s student affairs made under the influence of the Senior Class was the Council of Class Executive Committees, organized to better individual situa- tions, derive greater privileges and enjoyment from college, and to cement relations among the four class organizations, the Council had a strong effect on the cooperative attitude among the class organizations, and stabilized the classes ' individual operation, creating much greater cooperation and harmony in class affairs. The Senior Class finished its collegiate career with a contribution to the Alumni Association of all remaining funds and prepared to begin life in a world at war. •4 18 SENIOR CLASS SENIOR CLASS SENIOR CLASS SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS C. The impact of the world-wide transitional period that has been felt by all schools has had its effect on our four years. How- ever, through the ceaseless efforts of the administration and students, R. P. I. has expanded and progressed. May she continue to surge higher into the reahiis of education. 4. 19 SENIOR CLASS SENIOR CLASS elizabeth luitchell aaroii jiS North Main Street, Suffolk, Virginia Bachelor of Science in Social Science — Collegiate Professional Certificate in Elementary Education edmund bangle abrahani loo Washington Street, Portsmouth, Virginia Bachelor of Scietice in Social Science — Cerman Club susaii Virginia abrahani 2Q Neptune Avenue, Woodmere, Long Island, New York Bachelor of Science in Social Science — Hockey Team, ' 7, ' 4S, ' 40; Cotillion Club, ' 7, ' 4S, ' y, ' o; Booster Club, ' jO; House Council, ' fo; Hillel, ' 47, ' 4S, ' 40, ' =;o, ' j ,- Vice President, Correspondint; Secretary victor abrahani 210 North Adams Street, Richmond, Virginia barbara jane alien 703 Mt. P. I., as at most institutes of higher learning, is a curious potpourri of confusions and disappointments, achievements and laughter, hard work and enrichment, friend- ships and good times. The types of lives we lead here may vary somewhat, depending on the individuals concerned. Intellectuals and rah-rah Joe College boys seldom may see eye to eye, but the environment in which we exist daih- has its effect. At any rate, there are many things here which we share in common. Being per- petuall}- broke is probably one of the most fundamental conditions of the majority of us. Life here isn ' t necessarily expensive however, thank the Lord and a number of more earthly individuals. Those S. G. A. dances are always fun, and even the good old fashioned bull sessions (whether over bridge, brew, or Beethoven), give their percentage of kicks. For entertainment, there ' s usually some festivity in the gym every week, and we ' re decidely convenient to theaters and concert halls for the sake of those who like long haired evenings, movie love, or even popcorn. Anyway, whether you ' d rather spend your week ends at irginia Beach, up round Charlottesville way, or at a Jam Session uptown, you ' ll have to admit there ' s an existence to be enjoyed between Franklin and Park, too. Alaybe the following pages will help you remember the organizations with which you ' ve been connected, a quiz that was especially rough, or a party that was real GONE. The snack bar and the slop shop, the noise-filled, smoke-filled hangouts ' round the corner, the chattering fountain in the park, the dorms, the classrooms, and even the library have seen a lot of living pass by in the past year and long before then, too. We hope the greatest part of that living was enjoyable to you. 4 84 } ♦•♦ ♦•• 85 ! To hear the case of any accused, in cases involving possible infractions con- cerning lying, cheating, or stealing, the honor council, composed of duly elected students hears the cases of the accused, weighs the evidence, and recommends its decision to the college administration. Serving on the Women ' s Honor Council this year were Joyce Owen, Barbara Barton, Lois Parsons, Muriel Davis, Nancy Sondles, Dorothy Larson, Mary Stevens, Ellen MoUer, and Ann Huffman. Sarah Phipps was speaker. On the Men ' s Honor Council were Brooks Traweek, Drury Lyle, Jack Roach, Baxter Duffy, Carson Overton, Charles Wood, Joseph Francis, Ronald Feaster, Fred Sloan, and Terry Ulman. William Johnson was speaker. Honor (]ounoil ■■• •♦•( HlumHi Hi4joclail04t After numerous efforts and a great deal of planning, the hopes for an R. P. I. Alumni Association became a reality this year. Still a young organization, of course, it is growing steadily, nonetheless. The enthusiasm ex- pressed through the support of its members is an encouraging sign which indicates that while R. P. I. progresses yearly through its administration and current student bodies, the students of past years still remember well their days here and watch their Alma Mater ' s growth with interest and pride. At the successful Home-Coming held for the first time this year, alumni had a round of activities to keep them busy, ranging from business meeting to the final banquet and dance at the Richmond Hotel. Serving as officers are Jack Creasy ' 42, President; Dabney Darrocott, 50, X ' ice President; Mary Jo Stahl Southall, ' 40, Secretary; and William Sewell, ' 49, as Treasurer.
