Mnnnner LIBRARY RICHMOND ?m[mUl INSIIM FOREWORD The annual of 1945 was made possible be- cause of a purpose. The purpose was laid down long before the first die was cast or the first copy corrected. It has been the guide-post of your staff. This year we have striven to make this annual synonymous with R. P. I. Call it an echo, a looking-glass or merely the spirit of college. It is for this purpose, of the students, by the students, and for the students, that the WIGWAM is dedicated. . .your album of memoirs. «. «•« DEDICATION The WIGWAM Staff gratefully dedicates its 1945 issue to Dr. Howard H. Davis because of his kind- ness, his intellectual integrity, and his ever present interest in the students. ' ■• THE COLLEGE The Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary consists of a group of professional schools and departments to which has been added a junior college of liberal arts and sciences. R. P. I. IS, as its name implies, a profes- sional institute located in the central section of Richmond. The school offers a wide variety of programs extending not only through the usual four college years, but in certain fields, into one or two years of graduate work. The Institute has its own faculty, its own campus, and a separately organized student life. The entrance requirements, like its objec- tives and purposes, are entirely different from the College of William and Mary in Williams- burg and other liberal arts colleges. .-Advisor— DR. A wise editor has written that there are seven ways to lie happy and that the fellow who is smart enouj h to keep out of deht won ' t need the other six. To keep out of debt, one must learn early in life to practice thrift. There is no way to practice thrift that is safer and surer than the Natural-Bridge Way. Sometimes it is the nature of a craft to create an unbreakable tie between it;clf and the worker in that field, a heart attachment equal to lifetime devotion. One familiar example is PRIXTIX ' G. Once editor, once compositor, or press- man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of a camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer ' s ink, symboli- cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert- ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity. ) ' curs of experience hcz ' e taiKjht us!
