Y. Time: May, 1963. Event: Passing Review of all dogs. As we are strolling around the rink our at- tention is drawn to an outstanding Power ' s model with something new in neckwear, Inky thrown casually around her shoulders. We find it is none other than our own Bettv Blair. The crowd is anxiously awaiting the be- ginning of the show when the sun reflects the bars of a handsome young captain and for a minute we are so stunned that we neglect to notice the person at his side. We are speech- less when we see that his wife is Mrs. Katherine Curtis James. Further down on a saddle- stiched leash instead of Fido is curly haired, brown-eyed Jr. Among the socialites, we recognized a familiar smile and discover that it is Peggy Lorraine, just as charming as she was in ' 43. We find that she still has as many males on the leash as ever. A very distinguished couple is now ap- proaching the gates. Slightly gray but still attracting attention we find Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wiltshire celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Wiltshire, the former Beryl Smith, has received world fame as an accom- plished musician. Every one is now stopping at the cocktail bar which is being manned by Ferrell Stubs who neglected her duties for today as stenog- rapher for the manager of Lord and Taylor. Seated in the press box with her head down and her pencil going at a rapid rate is the reporter for the New York Times for this big event. Her pencil stops, her head lifts, and we are not amazed to see the former publicity agent of R. P. I., Virginia Rives Rowe. Sitting in the box seat is one of the celebrities of Broadway, Miss Mary Frances Rutherford, whose name is seen in the current hit, Black Magic. Next to her is Doug Denniston, who is rumored as a possible second husband — our editors say yes. Across the aisle looking like a typical Greenwich Village artist, is Ted Turner. (P. S. folks. We just heard Ted has won first prize at an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum.) With him is a party of three, Bagley Bragg, true abstractionist of the day, is seen chatting with Shirley Collins, famous illustrator of general advertising. We heard yesterday that one of our William and Mary girls has just completed an outstanding piece of work in designing and decorating in a Beverly Hill ' s home. It is, of course, Miss Frances Gregory who at the moment is engrossed with the police dog that is now being shown. Strolling through the crowd, admiring the judge ' s decisions, with a dashing lieutenant, is Mrs. Emily Shockly Larner, dressed in the style of a fashion co-ordinator at Bergdorf Goodman ' s. She is speaking with one of the judges — w e can ' t tell who it is, but wait a minute — she ' s turning toward us. Yes it is Sarah Brockenbrough. I suppose you would remember Sarah better if we would say that she is the very lovely blond that has had the horse world upset for the last few years by walking away with just about every cup available. Remember Jerry Field ' s versatility for art and business? Now he is engaged in personnel work and in his spare time is an interior designer. He certainly is gazing fondly at that little cocker spaniel. Why don ' t you buy it Jerry? We hear it ' s for sale. In our haste to tell you of the spectators we forgot to mention the two commentators for today ' s show. Who do we see but that carrot- top, personality plus, Brer Rabbit (Now Mrs. Trick) — to you, Marge Buhr. The commen- tator on the other side of the bench is tall, striking, Jackie Wheeler, now Mrs. Tex War- rington, who for the past year has gained re- cognition being a prominent club woman and mother. We hear a familiar voice from the stand yelling to Mrs. Warrington to hurry and judge the show as it is getting near her baby ' s formula time. With natural curiosity, we turn to see Jean Shwab Rougan who is associated with Dorothy Gray products. Our attention is drawn to one of the main arches where the dogs are being led on for the final selection. Weeksie Burns is putting the last minute brush strokes to her French poodle. She looks as cute as ever in her light brown tweed suit. With her executive position at Best as department head of fashion, we wonder how she can find time for a dog show. Close behind her is Mrs. William Srausse, the former Alice Funderburk. She is still in the clouds, with her 12-year-old son following in her husband ' s footsteps as ace pilot for the Pan American Airlines. The dogs are now being lined up in front of the judge ' s stand and the audience is hushed. The judging begins. Everyone is waiting eagerly for the decision. Here it is: First prize goes to Mary Katherine VanSant, leading store organizer of the day, for her English Bull. Second prize goes to Margie Britton ' s Pekingese. Not only is Peggy a sales pro- moter with her men, but she is also prominent in the field of sales promotion. Everyone is coming down the aisles at a mad pace to congratulate the winners. At the end of the throng is Miss Bettie Tucker, now Mrs. Bob Stanley. Her ability for mass recreation has been shown in the past few years at the Red Cross, Y. W. C. A., Old Ladies ' Benevo- lent Society, and as a side hobby she is teach- ing gymnastics. Bob III is pulling his mother ' s coat and at the same time the dog ' s tail. Mrs. Mary Kayhoe Ford is directly behind her. We ' ve heard Mrs. Ford is engaged in part-time work at Gimble ' s, as assistant to the personnel director. Amidst the crowd there is echoed a joyous laugh. Naturally Sally Powell is in the middle of it. She is still as vivacious and as beautiful as the day she left school to pursue her work in music. She is now leader of an all-girl orchestra. Through the mumble of voices we hear over a microphone a call for a doctor. Dashing forth to answer the call of mercy we see Connie Pitchford. Technician work became so fasci- nating for her that she further studied the art of medicine and is the leading Pediatrician of Richmond. Keeping the crowd at a distance is a social worker. We can tell that by the clever manner with which she handles the people. Incase you don ' t recognize the person, she is Esther Gold fa rb. One person is pushing forward with a determined look to be of some assistance. June Goldsmith ' s aptitude for learning has helped her to succeed in her determination. For Heaven ' s sakes! There is Lucille Guthrie sketching people ' s clothes. That girl doesn ' t forget business for a moment. Natalie Harland, who is now living in the frozen North, is visiting Helen McCauly. Natalie is singing at a party given for McCauley ' s sub-deb daughter. The spectators are leaving the stands feeling the triumph of joyous victories or gloom of defeats. We follow a part of the crowd to the Starlight Cocktail Bar. In the midst of the glittering array and romantic music is Jessie Cato. Like Adrian of ' 43, Jessie is costume designer of M. G. M. She is also seen taking small parts in many pictures. In the booth next to her is Mrs. Dave Satterfield, the former Anne Powell, who still looks like a queen. (Remember May Day?) At the revolving bar where horses are seen going around we notice Jo Harvey. Her chapeau is worth mentioning. It is the latest slant with the combination plastic silk. She is doing prominent work at the social agencies. Looking around we can ' t help noticing the clever decorations surrounding the place. When we are told that Ethel Saville was interior designer, we look more closely. The walls are entirely of glass brick and on each side there is a niche in which is placed a modern piece of sculpture by Kenneth Rowe, who after leaving the army resumed his natural trend in the field of sculpture. Not only have we needed a doctor today, but now the call is hear d for a nurse. Who is com- ing very promptly to the scene of the accident but Madline Jenkins? Walking leisurely through the throng, dressed in the very latest fashion is Dorothy Price. Dot is with the United States Social Service Bureau and her office is in Washington. Wait a minute! Who is that dashing madly toward the gate? It looks like — yes, it is — Jane Quinn hurrying to beat the deadline with a fashion write-up. From the whispers we learn that Jane is still designing her own clothes. A familiar smile and wave goes out to greet Sweetie Gibson, a social worker on the East Side of New York. Our eyes are tired, but we seem to recognize a Metropolitan Opera singer in the crowd. Small and dignified — that black hair as pretty as ever — we see Elfie Lee Meredith. A hand goes up to wave as we think we see the familiar face of Cynthia Mason, financier of Wall Street. Incidentally, Cynthia is also managing money for a certain man that was in the army. The crowd is dwindling now and we are attracted by a group of children surrounding a nice looking woman. Who is it? Well we see that she hasn ' t forgotten her Group Leader- ship after all . . . Yes, it is Ida Krapin. Who is this stunningly dressed woman com- ing out of the gate? We see none other than Sankie Hutchinson. We understand she enjoys draping her own clothes as well as those of prominent Chicago women. Standing right next to her is Rose Mory. Remember in June of ' 43 she married that handsome young Naval Lieutenant Dryer? She is now one of the best-dressed women in the United States and had given up her art career for a strictly solid marriage care er. The cars are pulling up in front of the gate. Stepping into the first one is Mary Shelby whose daughter is now in the service of the WAVES. Mary was active in the field of decorating. Virginia Fuqua, or Queenie as she was known to her college chums, is head technician at Stuart Circle Hospital. Her husband is engaged in government work that keeps him away most of the time, so Queenie — being the practical person she has always been — got herself that wonderful position. Getting into the car with Queenie is Betsy Williams, well-known critic of Dramatic Art. She looks very attractive in her new style jacket with her turquoise dress. Betsy just told us that she is going to visit Mary Garvey in Philadelphia for the week-end. Mary is now doing a double-duty role as Mrs. Siewers and Mr. Siewers ' secretary. These t wo young ladies strolling toward the gate seem familiar. Why it ' s Jane Hilbish and Carlyn Starts. After a chat we find they are both professors at Columbia University — Jane in the department of Physical Therapy, and Carlyn in the Science department. Now who could this be? The last person to leave, walking leisurely to her car. Of course we should have known — it ' s Mary Ann Walker with the same stride of R. P. I. days. We find that she and her husband are touring the United States. He is a professor at the Uni- versity of Virginia. And so, as the last car drives away from Trock Morton we leave our friends once more. Today has been fun! Snatching again at the joys we knew in our college days. So long and we hope to many of you haven ' t gone doggy. Few people passing down Franklin Street realize the charm of our historic Hickok House, but we, the students of R. P. I., in our short years on the campus, have learned to love its Southern grandeur and wonder about the previous pano- rama of scholars who have passed in and out of its doors. The Hickok House was built in 1855 and is the oldest building on our campus. The original spacious grounds, in the midst of which it stood during the days when it was a noble mansion, have since disappeared. The house shows taste of both the war days and the days of the Gay Nineties. In restoring the build- ing, the College has reserved much of its original charm by the simple Victorian decorations and authentic pieces of furniture that reflect the days in which the house was built. The halls today ring with gaiety and laughter as there is a wild dash to make that 8:45 and to avoid the night vigil of Mrs. Mosby. Our two big dances take place one in the fall and one in the spring. This year, most of the members ' thoughts were directed toward far-off Army camps, ships at sea, and foreign shores. Knowing that their fellows were often lonely, the Club gave a Defense Hop for the service men stationed around Richmond. The graceful candlelight initiation will be one of the favorite memories of R. Now that we are in the midst of war and stress, the school is offering an extensive intramural program. This program not only includes the sports that are offered by the school — such as hockey, basket ball, tennis, volleyball, horseback riding, archery, and dancing — but also outside activities. All students have been urged to participate in the intramural program. A means of creating interest has been the opportunity of winning an official school letter with the scroll marked Intramural. To get this award, the student has only to participate in three or more sports with an equivalent of 150 hours. Some of the many sports that are included are: Skating, hiking, bicycling, swimming, bowling, deck tennis, ping-pong, shuffleboard, paddle tennis, and badminton. The points are amazingly easy to acquire. The Athletic Association has this year begun the system of having one Game Night each month. This Game Night has served to stimulate interest in such things as folk dancing, community singing, various games, and entertaining boys in the service. At an informal party for the Freshmen, the Athletic Association had as its basic idea the WAVES and the WAACS. After the party the freshmen had refreshments and listened to explanations of the new point system. Senior awards are given each year for the most outstanding work done in athletics. This does not necessarily constitute actual work In athletics but outstanding leadership, interest, and some participation.
