I am an over-see-er, so to speak, and in my tiny nylon ball I can perceive strange conversations, curious events, and things I shouldn ' t. If it be your desire, I shall transform this minute into a similar one, twenty years hence. First, let me assure you that things have changed ; no longer is the R. P. I. campus only six by eight feet. It now extends to the corner of Belvidere and Franklin. The Mosque is the clubhouse of the I. R. C, and the Monroe Terrace is barely large enough to house the ' 6i Minorities. Wait! The cellulose vapors are clearing away, and 1 can see through the stainless steel atoms a formidable impression of the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, as it will appear in 1961. Listen : It is a reunion of the Class of ' 41. The scene: the magnificent auditorium of the Hibbs Student Activities Conservatory of Mass Recreation Building. Mrs. J. Garber, the former Miss Efficiency Chenault, whose four children are often called the most perfectly psychologically-reared brats in the U. S., is presiding. Mr. Garber, absent because of a pressing press engagement, is conspicuously missed. Irene Schurz, weight 167, is recognized from the floor. Quote Miss (still) Schurz: Hello. Unquote. Miss Annie B. G., who finally defeated Mr. Roosevelt last year by sixteen votes, showers her tender phraseology on the gathering. Mary Cosby, who recently hit g above High c, Miss Lucille Britton, the protegee of the piano bench, and Ruth Roach, scenic designer-turned-basso, render the perennial favorite, Vou Are My Sunshine, which still lingers as R. P. I ' s alternate alma mater. Mrs. Nick Sham, who now, much to her consternation, can surprise no one with her temper, sings I ' m a Devil. Next, the sexes are segregated and Louise Crowder explains the facts of life to those unsuspect- ing personages who are still in the dark. Impressions from my globe: Nellie Rust and Barbara Kroeger, five each of the ten best-dressed women in America. Evva Sobeloff, ignoring the meeting, reading Somerset Maugham ' s latest novel to Dorothy Lowery, who is still quiet, easy-going. Fran Haley, making, from her weekly allowance, the final payment on the ' 41 Wlcw. M. Sara Blanton, Mary Veamans and Ann Snead, the three Flo Nightingales of the Medical College, have recently turned their medical experiences from the saving of human beings in general to the saving of unmarried men only. Winifred Baker, still undecided about who, when, aiid where. Becky Fox, just completing a series of articles on The Modern Iiiterior for House Luscious. Grace Kight, Richmond ' s own retailing expert, and Marion Garthwright White, fashion expert, sitting in a corner, composing a joint letter on What R. P. I. Did to Me. Darn It. Alma McCann, who remains the only U. S. social worker wearing red wedgies to work. Ah, wait a moment. Dinner is announced and the group adjourns to the smaller Blue Room for their twentieth annual banquet. Mrs. John Pendleton, the former Elizabeth Gibson, is hostess. With her permanent smile, equaled only by Mrs. Alma Talley, she seats her guests — individually. I can see her clearly now; she is seating Mr. William Lipscombe. And how is your latest mural, Mr. Lipscombe? Fine; and how is your latest child? Fine. And so it goes. Dr. M. T. Gresham, Ph.D., Lh.D., etc., seems to be having trouble with her soup. No wonder; ' tis ' cause she has no soup spoon. The dinner is interrupted momentarily as ' irginia Thayer enters, and finds her place-card. She finally locates it, next to Miss Jean Arnold. Miss Arnold, you would recall (if you had my extrasensory perception), is now a dean of women at the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York. Proceeding to the next course, 1 now perceive that man R. P. I. grads are renewing old acquaintances. Kitty Darnell, whose art studio in New York is the gathering place for artistes, is asking her former roommate how she stays so thin. To which Miss Buscher replies, I just eat three helpings of everything. -t 58 t it -S . fy ' tz-Vi f i- V C5 C i «X 1 see Janet Tvler is busily engaged in conversation «ith Helen Vogel. It seems that they can ' t even forget business on this great occasion. Helen, who has succeeded Mary Lewis in the fashion world, employs Janet as her personal secretary. Jerry Troutman, whom they have not seen in years, is displaying her Sunday bridge-work set which her dentist-husband just completed. Marion Weber and Florence Rogg, down at the other end of the table, are swapping their favorite jokes. Rogg is complaining to Adelaide Snead that she is still an Army Widow, while Snead is saying that she is slightly behind schedule in turnnig out her usual thousand masterpieces a year. Maggie B. White is present, sporting the first and best suntan of the season. Maggie ' s future evolves around her six little Whites. Alexa stops to say good-bye to Maggie. She has to leave early so that she won ' t miss the first qu arter of the House of David basket ball game, in which Husband Dick Pink is playing. The after-dinner speeches are now in progress. Miss K. Mansfield, president of the Class of ' 41, is toastmistress. Kitty, by the way, is now Fashion Editor of the New York Times, and is also a stand-in for Merle Oberon. She introduces a fellow Fashion Editor, Molly Harding, who holds this same position with I ' oijue. Molly speaks briefly on What R. P. I. Could Have Meant to Me. J. H. Boothe, Jr., is heard from next, in a discussion of the latest recordings of B. CJood- man, the aged maestro. After after-dinner impressions: Margaret Moore, God ' s gift to social work, and Fanny Van Doren, the scourge of the microbe underworld, loosen their charm upon the gathering. This is the same charm (though streamlined) that was so generously showered upon R. P. I. in ' 41. Anne Ward, rolling them in the aisle as she appears in a 1941 costume and hairdress. (Bangs they were called, I think.) Asa Watkins and family televising as usual. Everett Stutts, who is now president of the fabulous Macy-CJimbel-Saks-Lord S: Taylor-Levy Company, fluttering the female hearts with an adventure yarn, Caught in the Clutches of an Electric Loom ! Lee Driggers, looking for Count No. 6. Frances Southall. looking for degree No. 8. Spratley and Bev, looking for some one to play bridge with. Mildred Fletcher, carrying around a ball of yarn to start a sweater for the Red Cross, and looking for some one to practice her case work on. Doris Howard, bidding adieu to the assemblage. She is on duty at the hospital twenty hours a day, and is writing a book on My Life at Stuart Circle in her spare time. Katherine Mallory is her traveling companion to and from the hospital. Sylvester Proctor, who, because of a plastic job is no longer mistaken for his brother, discuss- ing with Herbert Mack the latest trends in how to make a department store crowd feel at home. Mack, a group leader, replies, The only thing 1 can think of is to let them play ' Blind Man ' s Buff. ' The group is interrupted momentarily by Eleanor Moon, the dancing demoiselle of the operating room. Miss Moon has dropped a stitch in her knitting. ( Ves, they are still at it in 1961.) She consults the audience at large for a solution as to how to pick it up. Mildred Clements, who is now faculty consultant of Virginia high schools, distributes copies of her Art for the Moron. Flash! Polly Bates today learned to laugh without it sounding like she was in misery. Carmen Fisher asks to be excused while she dashes out to complete a piece of sculpture. Margie Behle Turner appears, wearing a ' 4t Lilly Dasche hat that is still in style. Dot Wilkerson, now a Mrs., announces her next week ' s lecture on The Development of Hodges and the Theatre. Amanda Arbogast is announcing her recent promotion as head of the Art Department of the greater Chelf Drug Companies. Kitty Ingraham, who decided to be a career woman after all, recently discovered a new germ which reproduces only in Listerine. Mary Painter Jordan is still raising her children by the group leadership method learned at R. P. L Mary Frv is now back at Collegiate, teaching the gals how to play ball. We will quietly steal away from this ' 61 reunion, mv friends, and return to Richmond and R. P. L of ' 41. Adieu. 59 )■ 3 M „ WJI UfWCA44 As a class, we of ' 41 have made it a policy to do the best we can with what we have and to bestow upon you, who we are leaving behind, our most characteristic and favored possessions. Mandy Arbogast and Nellie Rust, those roomies of two years ' standing, give all of the cookies they might eat within the next two hundred and seventy-three days to: Maxine Rolph, Cobey, Ginny Hale, Nancy Chambers and all of the other underprivileged cookie lovers. And, Jeanie Arnold, with her unlimited capacity for food at any time, has cast a spell upon Lorraine Morris. So — Lorraine now has an appetite. Everett I-just-can ' t-eat-without-my-butter-plate Stutts leaves this cherished piece of china (loaded with butter) to Mufhe Glann. Helen ' ogle, another staff -of- life, etc., advocate, leaves word to EUie Haslegrave to carry on; to always tell of the good food you can get elsewhere. Our two-term wit. Queen Annie Beryl CJannett, surrenders her crown to the twice-defeated Monsieur Desportes with hopes that he will reign supreme next year. John Garber, also a two- termer, wishes that Betty Brodie should succeed him in intellectuality. The excellent collection of photographs recently hung in Dr. Hibbs ' outer office is the generous donation of Miss Fanny Spratley. The photos are of Bev. (She is marrying him and doesn ' t need them any more.) And, the illustrated chart in color on Calisthenics was contributed by Janet Tyler, who decrees that Mar}- Beth Blayney be custodian of the above-mentioned. Mary Tyree Gresham and Fran Haley wish to leave bits of advice to all who are interested. Mary has long since discovered that studying is foolish. You should spend one day a month cramming, she says. Fran has a collection of penguins as a jinx for good grades and a chin-up attitude. Moral: Heed your elders. Psychology-saturated Gray Chenault is also giving advice. But to one person only, Jean McCabe. Says CJray to Jean, Analyze all with whom jou come in contact. Leave not a guinea pig to himself. At least twice this year, Phyllis Knight has found half-smoked cigars in her room. Ruth Roach and Kitty Darnall, the eluded guilty ones, give her a whole one. She passes it on to Jerry Trout- man to smoke the next time she gives out of cigarettes. Sara Blanton, Doris Howard, Katherine Mallory, Eleanor Moon, Ann Snead, Frances Van Doren and Mary Veamans got gipped. (They were at M. C. V.) So they aren ' t leaving anything because they are coming back next year to make up for what they ' ve missed in the way of gossip. Evva Sobelotf, of Sobeloff, Levine and Sobeloff, Inc., dissolves the firm and leaves Leah stranded. She gives Margaret Kaufman and Betty Joseph a dead gold fish each. The best cartoonist in school, Polly Bates, wants France Lee Lonergan to continue where she is leaving off and entertain the art classes with drawings of chubby babies and tabby cats. Another art student with much paint-slinging ability and potentialities along the lines of wit is James Henry Boothe. He gives Ross Abrams the first copy of his newly-released pamphet, Hovi to Get Around the Teachers or A Short Cut to HuUiiii . Marion Weber has kept a man in her room for months. The fact that he is cardboard doesn ' t matter. It is important, though, that Weber thinks that Ann Nash would enjoy him ever so much. Speaking of joyful things, Edwina Wallace should enjoy wearing her hair that different way — created by Mildred Clements. Since some of us must simply be different, Ann Ward surrenders that wild desire to Ann Muse. Kathleen Mansfield is leaving an extensive collection of photographs of Merle Oberon for Billie Pictri to distribute among all who did not see the likeness between the two stars. Stevie Chaplinsky, Mary Cosby and Lucielle Britton, the melodious misses who have trod our muses, request that Garabedian lead all little music-gallies in the ways of rhythm. Kitty Ingraham doesn ' t think she is being selfish just because she is keeping her most valued possession. She has carried on a continuous conversation about him for two years — that V. M. I. man of hers! Winkie Baker, in her perfection of carriage and poise, leaves all of the above-mentioned to Shirley Goldsmith. Bonnie Buscher is giving Llysse a little curl in payment for the Swiss Folk tune he composed about her. Since two of our clan are making bequests to him. Carmen is doing likeviise also. She, the cause of all D. P. ' s love ruptures, makes the request that Eukie Hood and Tougie Cosby take care of her love. Since Florence Beasley cuts classes to sleep circles away, Irene Schurz has a better remedy to leave behind. Pancake make-up. Billy Lipscomb, that pessimistic person with the beautiful teeth, advises Margaret Tucker to be serious, for soon she will be in the outer world. At the final meeting of the ' 40- ' 4i Student and Inter-Club Councils, Elizabeth Gibson had a recording made of the complete session so that next year ' s councils could carry on more easily. Florence Rogg gives Catherine, the maid, her beautiful long, blue, cigarette holder. The other members of the class, who are making no bequests, bid you all a fond adieu, with a request that there be more Mexicanas, Popcorn Balls, Hecks-a-Poppins and Hors d ' Oeuvres next year. 4. 60 }y J (yitij Ui vc la It la t - RJ i- ' ' t Maybelle Gary President Mary Ellen Trimmer Secretary Jean McCabe Vice President Betsy Peterson Treasurer ■iS{61) - fLVu UjWCi444 I] .
