Wluii ,1 (]iiiit; woTiiiui iiuirrli-, lir imivt u ' ve thought as to uliat name she will use. There are three thiiins she can do. She can bury her identity in that of her husband and drop all traces of her former name by calling herself Mrs. John L. Smith; or she can keep both names and sign herself Mrs. Mary Jones Smith; or, if shf is very advanced, she can continue to call herself Mary Jones. The work carried on at Franklin and Shafer Streets in Richmond was formerly independent, then it became consolidated or, if yon like, married to the College of William and Mary. When this was done, we dropped our former name entirely; and it became simply the Richmond Division of the College of William and Mary. Soon we learned that this change left us with no identity of our own. We became simply a small branch of the College at Williamsburg. When a young married woman drops her name and familv connections and goes by the name of her husband exclusively the sacrifice may make her feel happy; but, when you marry two institu- tions, it doesn ' t always work out that way. So recentiv we changed our name to the Richmond Professional Institute, a Division of the College of William and Mary, in order to make two things clear; first, that while a part of the William and Mary system and operated bv the College of William and Mary with the same president and board, the Richmond Professional Institute really comes of a sufficiently im- portant educational family to have a name of its own and a purpose of its own and a faculty of its own and, to change the figure, to be a sufficiently important tub in the educational world to stand on its ow n bottom ; and, second, we changed the name to make it clear that here at the Richmond Professional Institute technical, vocational, and professional work are not merely incidental features added to a general college curriculum in order to attract students, but on the contrary that these fields of study constitute the things in which Richmond Professional Institute specializes and on which it places the main emphasis. In any true marriage there are two parties — in this case the Richmond Professional Institute and the College of William and Mary — and both deserve to have at least part of their names retained. To the class of 1940 I might ask if, w hen your friends and acquaintances ask you what is your alma mater, will you answer The College of William and Mary and not even mention the Richmond Professional Institute; or will you sav College of William and Mary and then add the name of the Richmond Professional Institute; or will you say Richmond Professional Institute and then add the name of the College of William and Mary? Vou, the class of 1940, will be the first to receive diplomas under the new and double name which mentions both the Richmond Professional Institute, which you have actually attended, and the College of William and Mary, which operates R. P. I. and gives you your degrees. Vou will be the first who like Mrs. Mary Jones Smith finds happiness in assuming a new name, but also likes to keep her own too. Both the Richmond Professional Institute and the College of William and Mary wish vou well and are appreciative that you selected this as the col- lege that you were to attend and not some other.
