She is the eighth ship to bear the name for the commonwealth of Virginia. Of the previous seven ships named VIRGINIA, five were US. Navy ships and two served the Confederate States Navy. Each of these ships has left her mark in history and a few helped change the course of Naval Warfare and the history of sea power. The most recent ship named VIRGINIA was the battleship USS VIRGINIA CBB-132. She made the famous around the world goodwill tour of President Roosevelt's Great White Fleet in 1907 and saw action as a convoy escourt during World War I. She was sunk as an experimental bombing target in 1923. The mission of the USS VIRGINIA is to conduct prompt and sustained worldwide combat operations in the presence of multidimensional threats independently or with nuclear powered or conventional strike forces in support of the U.S. National Policy. Keeping the VIRGINIA in the highest state of operational readiness is the job of a highly trained crew of ofHcers, chiefs, and enlisted men. It is these men who write the history of the latest ship to bear the proud name VIRGINIA. 'fs
