The Hrst was one of the original thirteen frigates in the continental Navy the second a schooner, the third a 74-gun ship-of-the-line never called to service, the fourth, the famous Merrimack, a wooden hulled steam frigate which was burned by Union troops to prevent from being captured by the Confederates, who managed to salvage and reHt her with an iron plated ram and a cannon and renamed her VIRGINIA'1 The Hfth, a mobile gun platform destroyed in war 2 years after being built. The sixth, a captured spanish ship the Noe-Daquy renamed VIRGINIA and outHtted for war. The seventh a battleship IBBIBJ was a member of the Great White Fleet which circumnavigated the globe in 1907. The present day VIRGINIA is the first ship in a new class of Nuclear Powered Guided Missile Cruisers.
