Itis one of the seven Wonders of the World It was built in 1174. It's the same Bell Tower Where Galileo experimented with the Laws of Gravity. It leans 14 feet and increases 1 millimeter each year. In the same court yard stands the Baptistry and Cathedral. If you were one of the lucky ones you heard Tony the Security Guard close the doors to the Baptistry and give a demonstration of the incredible harmonics. 1 as-'ff P F L E K w 4 N Q F k , .Tb . 4 an F., 4, , . -w.-,J-1 , N W C' 1. ,ff Q, 3 a 4. , F URENCE TALY f v ,X x . THE DA Y WE sHoT THE R USSIANS Q Moskua, Carrel jumped back and forth around us shouting for us to hit the Missile and Gun Radars. We nailed every inch of the Moskua. We then focused on the Suerdlov Class Cruiser, the 2H Danov ICG 1322. Her crew standing proudly around the rails just watched as we captured them for The Records. Next the Krivaks, then the Support Ships. Twenty minutes later and it was all over. We turned to the east and departed. Rolls and rolls of AMMO went to the lab for processing. Carrel started writing the report for Washington. As the sun set the passageways echoed with recaps of the days events. 17 March 1982 The mood of the day was much more relaxed. Yesterdays excitement mellowed into a colorful memory - a memory of The Day We Shot The Russians. 14 March 1982 1000 hours IS2 Tom Carrel arrived this morning, right before we pulled out of Naples, Italy. Why we received an Intelligence Specialist isn't exactly clear. Rumor has it we are going to sight some Russian ships or else He's on board for some Special Training Upgrade Program. 1600 hours - The rumor was conHrmed. We received intelligence reports of a Russian anchorage. Our mission along with our sister ship, USS SOUTH CAROLINA, is to invade the anchorage. 1830 hours - A special team assembled and was briefed on Russian ship design. Carrel discussed the strategic target areas. Areas we must hit for our mission to be successful. The invasion was scheduled for 0800 hours 16 March, one day away! 15 March 1400 hours - We tried a practice Run on the SOUTH CAROLINA to gather range, angle and lighting data for tomorrow. The atmosphere is Hlling with excitement. 16 March 0800 hours - D-Day. We are delayed, No invasion until this afternoon. 1500 hours - The Russians are sighted on the horizon! All stations are quickly manned and ready. A Moskua Class Helo Carrier, a Suerdlov Class Heavy Cruiser, Three Krivak Class Destroyers, a Lama Class Supporgg Ship and 4 Auxiliary Support Ships all sitting like unsuspecting ducks as the hunters ARRI V . It seems like seconds later we were on top of them. Noise from Sawtells Automatic 400mm Cannon filled the air, drowning out the non-rhythmic clamour from the various 200mm 's, all firing away. I managed to pump off 20 shots from my 600mm cannon into the heart of the fa 1 f , WU, t 84 t 111811.
