The VIRGINIA has an overall length of 585 feet and a beam of 63, feet, with a nav- igational draft of 30 feet 6 inches. Her full load displacement is l0,5O0 tons. The propulsion plant, consisting of two nuclear reactors which provide steam to two sets of geared turbines and propellers, will drive VIRGINIA at speeds in excess of 30 knots. The nuclear propulsion plant provides the VIRGINIA with high speed endurance which is vital to our Navy's nuclear-powered task force concept. The first nuclear reactors installed contain sufficient fuel for about 10 years of operation. The mission of the VIRGINIA is to oper- ate offensively in the presence of air, surface, or subsurface threats independently or -with nuclear-powered or conventional strike forces, and to provide protection to these forces and other naval forces or X , . .,,.,,. 9 . To accomplish her designed mission, VIRGINIA is equipped with a fully integrated Combat System combining four elements: target detection, digital data processing, command and control, and weapons control. Weapons delivery will be , accomplished with two multi-purpose dual arm guided missile launching systems with ASROC fAnti-submarine Rocketl capability, two 5 f54 calibre Iight weight gun mounts, two 3 barrel torpedo launchers, and a LAMPS flight airborne multi-purpose systeml heli- copter. In addition to long range surfacef air search and fire control sensors, VIRGINIA will utilize the new ANXSQS-53A long range sonar system rounding out her capabilities as a three dimensional man-o-war. Keeping the VIRGINIA in the highest state of operational readiness is the job of the 28 officers and 445 enlisted men who comprise her crew. It is these men who will write the history of this latest ship to bear the name VIRGINIA. The ability to operate a ship of the complexity of VIRGINIA with so few men is the result of a concerted sffort to reduce shipboard manning requirements. Maximum use of automation and labor saving innovations have made the Navy's reduced manning concept a reality on this ship. M
