cgeafazvfs Boas! Rugged Virginia Beach Defense That Topped Eastern District Statistics Digs In Against Cox, While Seahawk Looks On Approvingly. OUR SEAHAWKS SHOW PERFECTION IN '65 The same Virginia Beach football team that was not expected to win more than half of their games, could produce only tive returning lettermen, and had to build an entirely new backfield all under a new coach, finished I0 consecutive games without a single defeat. Our opponents found the Seahawk defense too tough to gain much on the ground and the secondary the best in the district on pass de- fense. Offensively, they found the hard-hitting Seahawk line too much to contain the running abilities of a trio of sophomore backs that gave Virginia Beach the best rushing team in the Eastern District in addition to its top scorer, Don Bradley. Such statistics, combined with all important school spirit, handed V.B.H.S. an im- pressive 8-O-2 record, blemished only by con- secutive ties with city rivals, Bayside and Cox. Unfortunately, because only three conference games were scheduled, the Seahawks were in- eligible for district or state championships. Only two minutes into its first season under Lew Breedlove, Virginia Beach fell behind Mid- lothian of Richmond, 6-O. However, the Sea- hawks rallied in the final quarter for a l8-8 victory. In the next two games, the Seahawks began to pick up unexpected momentum. A strong rushing offense began to supplement our tight defense as the Hawks easily rolled over Norfolk Academy and Suffolk by 25-O and 25-6, respectively. Returning home for their fourth game, the highly favored Sea- hawks were stunned 6-6 by an inspired Bay- side eleven. An enthusiastic homecoming game with arch-rival Cox was the setting of the sec- ond 6-6 deadlock in a row. In the last half of the season, the mighty Seahawks showed little mercy in polishing off the remaining five teams in order. Cape Charles fell 20-O. Next Northampton wound up on the short end of a i9-6 decision. The Seahawks then easily,rolled over Forest Glen, 34-O. Once beaten Southamp- ton had their troubles with the now unyielding Seahawks, who took their seventh victory 34-I3 at the expense of the Indians. In the last game at Kellam, Virginia Beach tallied i9 points, while the Knights found it impossible to score against a team that had out scored their op- ponents by more than four to one. The green and white remained unbeaten!
