Each day the school is filled with students studying to become better citizens of our world. But at night our school comes to life in a different way. There is the ex- citement of the basketball games , the beauty of the Iunior Prom , the work of the class suppers, and the anxious waiting for the rising curtain. The class of 59 has tried to incorporate each of these into the 1959 Virgilian. We hope in years to come, this book will recall vividly the 1958-59 school year. The Virgilian Staff SEATED: Ianet Hutchings , editor. We are proud to dedicate our yearbook to one wnom we feel has contributed the most to our class. She has helped us and guided us through many difficulties . As our Iunior advisor she presented many new ideas to us which added a very healthy sum to our treasury. At the end of the year we knew we couldn't carry on without her, so we again elected her as our advisor for our Senior year. The decision was unanim ous that we dedicate the 1959 Virgilian to Mrs. LaVena Court. 1 -ew The Principal's Letter Dear Members of the Graduating Class of 1959: It is with a great deal of pleasure that I take this opportunity of congratulating you for your achievement in gaining your high school diploma. I hope that each of you have taken advantage of the opportunities that have been provided for you throughout your attendance in the Virgil Central School. As you continue your education either through the school of life or through formal educa- tion, may the learning acquired ever guide you to lead a rich and full life. In this letter, I would like to review very briefly the progress of your school in the years since it was formed as a result of the centralization of several small common school districts and the Union Free District of Virgil. This centralization took place on May 22 , 1930, and Virgil Central School began operating at the beginning of the school year 1930-31 . Shortly after centraliza- tion the building which now houses grades 5 through 12 and the gym was constructed. It then educated all pupils from lst through 9th grade with the addition of a high school grade each year until they educated all from lst through 12th grade. As other common schools were annexed, the school population soon required additional space. In 1947 many of you began school in the lst grade. That year there was an enrollment of 297 in Virgil Central School. The following year a new kindergarten was introduced, a quonset was added for the 4th grade and the Ag Shop was provid- ed a building of its own in what is now one of the bus garages . As you progressed from grade to grade you were still experiencing some crowded conditions . In 1952 planning was begun on the elementary school addition and when you reached the halfway point in the seventh grade, you witnessed the opening of the elementary wing. By this time your school had grown to a population of 350 and your class had a membership of 28. Throughout your high school career which started in September 1955 , with 19 enrolled, you were to have many new opportunities made available to you. Nurse services were provided on a half-time basis and a dental hygienist examined your teeth. Other services such as a girls' physical education instructor, guidance director, and a speech therapist joined the staff on a part-time basis. Driver Education became a part of the high school curriculum along with better opportunities in science as new laboratory equipment was provided for your use. Each of these things helped to provide you with a richer and greater program. Your senior year has finally come and gone. Your class has shrunk to a much smaller number. Closed circuit television has become a part of the classroom scene. As you make plans for your future, the school you have left behind must, also, consider its future. Even as you prepare to graduate, a large new plant is being constructed in the South Cortland area. The State Department is requesting that all small schools combine with other small schools to becomelarger units. We are scheduled therefore, to consider combin- ing with the Dryden-McLean District. Only time will tell whether such a thing shall come to pass. On the education scene , even more stress is being placed on education and its importance in latter life. All these will influence the future of your school even as your future has been influenced by its existence. With your diploma in hand you lea ve the school that has guided your education for twelve years. May it have had a great influence in helping you toward as successful a future as you desire. Best wishes to each of you. Wezzlfzlh A Board President Robert Sayer prrrswnts Principal Waltor Franklin with his trophy as part of the nrnnram honorinn Taachors' RK-coqnition Day. Class History We pause to write our history and mem- ories are recalled of all the things we grew to love, the fun, and the life we knew. Could it have been twelve years ago that all of this began? What was it then as we look back, that made these years so grand? On that first day of school in 1947 , came six of our present seniors all scrubbed and eager, with freckles and missing teeth. How many could have recognized Betty, Judy, Ia net Mary, Bill and little Bobby Lang? We learned to count, to read and write, to walk in single file, and you can bet there were other things that cause us now to smile! We passed along, the years sped by. Dick Kimball came. . .the eighth grade made its trip to Albany and Cooperstown. . .we rode the Mary Moran, no better sailors ever. Can we ever forget our freshman year with Coach Seither urging us on, or the pancake supper, or the addition of Peck's bad boy, Dick Neal? Coach stayed with us another year, and Ed Reeve joined our group. As sophomores we schemed our schemes to fill our treasure chest. Then struggling on, we reached our junior year. We got om' rings , expensive things , and wowed them with our Prom. . .our Bongo Brew . . . the Caribbean Cruise. We smelled of grease paint, shook with fright but troopers that we were, poured out our talent in that play, Oh, Man! September and nine came through to bear that hallowed name of senior. The whirl began, the record hops , the magazines , the pictures , suppers, groan, the play, the games , the year- book, and Heaven help us , Homework! We're not through yet, there's still the trip, and tests , and graduation. But it is strange how sad and glad and full of mixed emotion we find ourselves at leaving here, our school, our Virgil Central. Class Will I, Bill Wamow , leave my height to Denny Rew. I, Edgar Reeve, leave my ability to stay away from girls co Chauncey Bennett. I, Dick Neal, bequeath my trim figure to David Pond. I, Ianet Hutchings, will my peroxide hair to Susan Griswold. I, Dick Kimball, leave my desire to go steady with one girl to Chuck Olin. I, Mary Barnum , will my favorite seat in detention to Trudy Taylor. I, Iudy Reynolds , will an early engage- ment to Dorothy Fisk. I, Bob Lang, leave my sports ability to Wayne Congdon. I, Betty Stevens , bequeath love and marriage to Iudy Wilk. To the Iuniors, we leave the thrill and excitemmt of the Junior Prom .... To the Sopho- mores , their money's worth from their class rings .... and to the Freshmen , we leave to them a long, long road ahead. We, the Senior Class of 1959 being of sound mind and body, do declare this our last will and testament. The Royal Couple Princess Mary Bamurn , Prince Dick Kimball. Junior Prom The student body elected as Prom King, Larry Bristol and as Queen , Betty Stevens. sg we I F if' . 1 x Caribbean Crulse The nautical Caribbean theme was used throughout the decorations.
