THE FOLK CLUB The Folk Club has had a most successful year, in spite of such difficulties as a cold gym, lost gym shoes, and flu bugsf' The club was much larger to begin with, but for various reasons, students found that theymust drop it. The faithful who have held out have emerged triumphantly graceful, and in possession of a wealth of material which will be infinitely useful as Well as delightful to them in the future. The Viper Glee Club is affiliated with The Council of Southern Mountain Workers, and holds voting privileges with that o-rganization. ln October the Council sponsored regional iolk festivals throughout the Southern Mountain Area. The festival for this region was held at the Pine Mountain Settlement School. The students who represent- ed Viper School were Mervin Combs, Dennis Pratt, Samuel Davidson, Carl D. Logan, Janet Combs, Hope Francis, Jo Ann Brashear, and Virginia Brashear. They were accompan- ied by their director, Miss Edna Ritchie. Although the weather was miserable, and the rain was pouring, they had a very delightful trip in a covered truck, driven by Mr. Enoch Hall of Viper. Once at Pine Mountain, the cold was forgotten in the cozy warmth of the lovely Laurel House living-room, where our students mingled with those of Pine Mountain, of Stuart Robinson, of Hyden, of Hindman, and other schools and groups in the region. The following day, the weather was beautiful, and the students easily persuaded Mr. Hall to drive back the long way, crossing Pine Mountain at two different places. At the tower they stopped to enjoy a picnic lunch and the scenery. One of the high points of the trip was the gToup's singing Alleluia from the top of the tower. The Folk Club has given one chapel program this year. At this writing, they are planning a school party. It is hard to realize what our school parties would be like if we didn't know folk games! The big event of the year, for the Folk Club, is the An- nual Festival at Berea, Kentucky, which takes place in April.
