The school is divided into two groups, A and B. The, pres- ident and his committee take charge of group A, while the Vit'O president and his commit- tee take Charge of group B. The programs alierlmte with the class stunts and are gin in on Wednesday. Miny varied programs have been given. Group A gave an interesting one in which ilastilutiais band was the prominent feature. Toots Pakz , with her Hawaiian troupe, was enjoyed, especially 19111111; Wheeler in his trombone solo. The whole program provoked laughter from the :uulienee. ' Group B gave an excellent program, which was of a more serious nature. Roll 02111 was answered by an event in history, fol- lowed by a patriotic solo by Mr. Costerisan. The young Indians solemnly declared bloody Kickapooginn war upon every tribe in the valley. West Lima and Readstown being nearer to the HKicks by about six leagues, were therefore subject to the grav- est danger. The tribe tire burned low and an air of mystery pervaded the lodge. A Grand Champion must be chosen to lead the bands to victory. One after another was gravely considered until a voice, us of the Great Spirit, was distinctly heard saying ,ttViva Mathews is elected Grand Sachem. For weeks the tribal serenity was dis- turbed by unusual preparations. Six of the best young war maidens were alloted t0 the special aid of the Grand Sachem: Violet Mathews, Miriam Dake, Vanetta Gibson, Winnie Dake, Ethel Marcus and Reba Car- penter. These seven were to bear the heat of the light While the rest of the tribe were to assist from an elevation of hills overlooking the scene of battle in the weird Indian fash- ion of rooting. The first herce battle of this bloody war was fought on the Shamrock battlefield, where the Kickapoogians met the fierce Rain- bow Indians. Viva Mathews, the Grand Sachem, won a name of renown in this not- ed battle. She was looked up to by all the other members of the tribe. The battle end- ed with a victory for the Rainbows. Two warriors were wounded on the Rainbow side and one on the Kickapoogian. Later the Grand Sachem led her tribe in- to a deep wilderness, There they attacked the West Lima tribe. The Kickapoogians were in severe want of food and ammunie tion and were soon forced to give up the tight. On hearing 0f the battle between the Kickapoogians and the iVest Lima Indians, the Readstown Indians prepared for war. A bloody battle was fought here and the Kickapoogians were forced to retreat from the lield. The Readstowu Indians were next attack- ed by the Kivkapoogians. This was one of the bloodiest battles of the war. One of the Readstown Indians won fame through her bravery and ferocity. During the bat- tle she was severely wounded and it was some time before she recovered. One of the Kickapoogians was wounded and much blood was shed on both sides. The Kickapoogians were at last forced to acknowledge defeat. The last fierce battle of the war was fought on the Shamrock battlefield. Here the Kickapoogians inet the Bright Star In- diuns. The Kickapoogians had now been at war for a long time and had learned the ways of attack and defense. The Bright Stars were of an old and peaceful tribe and had not been at war for several years. The Kickapoogians soon proved to them that their methods of warfare were far better than those of the Bright Stars. After a long fierce, charge made by the Kickapoo- gians, the Bright Stars raised the white fiag, which meant victory for the Kickapoo- gians. Thus the season ended, and the Kicka- poogizms are now peacefully encamped, planning new methods of attack for future wars. Such, this fall, was the situation in the Viola High School. There were graduated in the Class of 1922, six of the regular and substitute players of the squad of 1921-22. So when school opened in the fall the outlook was not very prom- ising; but like the ancient Kickapoogians, we decided that we would not show the white feather. No games were scheduled for the early part of the season, because most of our material was new and much practice was necessary. For that reason it was hard to work out a suitable schedule and here agaln we were handicapped. The response on the part of the boys in the school and their spirit of eo-operation were very gratifying. Glen, the only exper- ienced man, and Ronald Van Winter, who last year showed much promise as a player, alternated at the positions of center and right forward. Glen evidenced the same fighting spirit he had shown in previous years and did much to maintain the morale of the squad. Ronald lived up to expecta- tions and never once. did he Shirk. From the new recruits, Bernard Martin was se- lected for left forward, and Frank XVheeler and W'illie Hall for guards. Duane Van Fleet and Paul Martin also took part in some of the games, All of the boys Went into the game with enthusiasm and if pep vould win a contest, all of our games would have ended in glorious victories. The first game of the season was played with W'est Lima on their own floor. The entertaining team was prepared for a walk- awuy, but their hopes were somewhat crush- ed when, at the end of the third quarter, the score stood 9 t0 6 in our favor. Unfor- tunately for us the tide changed and the XVest Lima team managed to pile up sixteen points during the last quarter while we fail- ed to score once. Thus the game ended with a score of 22-9 in West Limiais favor. We, met Readstown for the second game of the season on our home floor. Spurred on by our first defeat, our hopes were set on achieving a victory, but again we were doom- ed to disappointment. Readstown came up for the game bent on adding another scalp and carried one home, for theyiwon in 21 hard fought battle with a score of 32-9. 0111' team next journeyed to Readstown in an attempt to retrieve our lost fortune and bring back the scalp of the enemy; but the fates decreed otherwise. We left the village with the Readstown folk rejoicing over a second victory. for the game had end- ed 32-3 in their favor. We, next played Soldiers Grove at home. The boys showed the effects of experience gxinell in previous games and the team work was very successful. This proved to be the best game, of the season and we, were rejoic- ing, when the whistle blew, in the knowledge that this time we had been Vietorious. The score was 35-7. The season elosed with a return game at Soldiers Grove. Our team work was good, but we failed to make the baskets. Soldiers Grove overwhelmed us with a score of 42-4. If one were to make a comparative study of the. scores of the season it would appear that we had failed. Yet we feel that much practical experience has been gained, and that we are building for the future. KICKAPOOGIAN ,23 Page 36 ' WVIOLA' HIGH KICKAPOO VALLEY TRACK AND FIELD MEET AND DECLAMATORY-ORATORI- CAL CONTEST Track and Field Meet The annual track and field meet was held at Viola, April 28, with La Farge as the en- tertaining school. Our school was represent- ed by Ted Lepley, Ronald Van iVinter, Earl Sanford, Charles Nye, Carl Van W'tinter, Glen Fisher, Everett Buxton, Gerald Harris and Theron Hoke. Ted received second place in the shot put and also in the discus throw. Charles l'e- eeived third in both the 100 yard dash and the 220 yard'dash. This gave us a total of eight points in the meet, All of the boys did well, but they were unable to cope with their more experienced rivals. The results of the meet showed that VV'au- zeka, Gays Mills and Soldiers Grove held first, second and third places respectively. Declamatory-Oratorical Contest The annual declanmtory-oratorical contest was held in the evening following the travk and field meet. Viola was represented hy Marguerite Ambrose and Cleo Smith. They had been chosen at 0111' local t-ontest from among five girl and five hay contestants. Marguerite presented her selection in a very able manner but failed to receive a phu'e because her time of delivery exceeded the twelve-minute limit. Cleois oratm'ical style was very pleasing and received very favora- '119 comment. He was handicapped by 1 bad cold, however. iVe are proud of the work done by 0111' representatives. All of the selections were very well given and showed careful training, The judges gave lil'st place in the girls' contest to iVau- zeka and in the boys' vontest to Gays Mills. An Appreciation The Athletic Association, in behalf of the school, wishes to thank those who gave their loyal support to the various teams of the Viola High School, and especially to those who gave their time to referee and umpire the. contests.
