Page Thirteen 1921 ' THE KICKAPOOGIAN 1921 PROPHECY It was the last night of the 0111 year when I had this strange dream or vision. At twelve o'clock a hook appeared surrounded by a light so bright that it dazzled me. Father Time could be faintly discerned in the shadows, and 11s I looked, ho eleverly flipped the pages with his svythe and I beheld a beautiful picture of a crowded New York opera. As I gazed spellbound, the book faded and transported in spirit to the opera. The date, December 2-1, 1031 tiashetl upon my sight, and I VHS surprizml to find that Father Time had dropped me, in a box occupied by Ruth Babbitt and Bessie Marcus, and I heard Bessie say, ttHow tlitl you like your winter ill France, Ruth? 1111 going next winter, as I have a vacation from my commercial duties here in New York. Fine, I met El'a while there. She, '1'21s obtaining 100211 00101' for a new French novel, while I gained some splendid ideas in designing, which have given me, handsome returns. Just then the orchestra began playing and I was delighted to see, Jack with his violin; and Harriette at the piano for it was one of the most noted orchestras in the United States. In a pause between the selections, Ruth showed Bessie Mnreus a picture from Bessie, Gochenuul' 0f the cutest little vine-wreathetl cottage, where she lived with her father and mother. I learned from their later conversation that Virgil was 21 skillful surgeon and Buford Smith had won nmny prizes in the stock show in Chicago. Guy, they said, was the, most popular comedian in the stage world. Then all at 0111e the light faded and with it my vision. I wonder how much of it will come true? The Juniors are lmek to school again full of pep, vim, and vigor, for :1 year of study and enjoyment of life. XVe are Well represented in both girls' and hoyf teams of basket ball. 1n the field meet the boys took an :lvtive part. Last year in the omtorieul and deelamatory preliminary contest we won a first, a set'ond, and a third place. Besides taking an :letive part in the above, named sehool activities, we are known as u very studious class. VVhenevel' a Very hard problem comes up in the sehool to he solved. the Juniors run be counted upon to do their share. Three members were chosen from 0111' class last year to help with the high school play entitled At the End of the Rainbow ; two members are, also represented on the annual stuff this year; and one in the class in the class play, Valley Farm. To increase the development, agricultural courses are oiTered by nearly every school. Our school offers in tile lirst year: Manual Training and a study of Field Crops; second year, Animal Husbandry; third year, Feeds and Feeding; fourth year, Farm Mechanics and Management. There is a great future for agriculture for it deals mainly with the study of life. Vast fields of research are untouched. Real agriculture has just begun. $$$$ DOMESTIC SCIENCE eV. . H. H. The Domestic Science course of Viola High was introduced in 1914-15, and was continued because of its great success. At first Freshman cooking and Sophomore seWing only were offered. The mothers appreciated and liked this course so well that it was introduced us an elementary course in the seventh and eighth grades. Domestic Science is a practical subject, for the girls get training which will be useful to them' in the home. Outside of this some girls , lfave no training whatsoever. Therefore, Domestic Science should he taught in every school in the United States. MM. D. ttNow our D. S. course is thru, Sewing, cooking, mending, too. Flu ban lifted. School culled. Social life revives. Debate on W'oman Suffrage by Junior members. Resultant: It has since been nationally recognized, and made the law of the land. The awful six weeksi tests. Freshman and Sophomore spelling contest. Sophs. won. uSt. Pat's Dayf' Lots of green; even the Freshies seem more verdant. Afternoon, literary program. Evening, Royal Neighbors gave the high school a delightful party. Essence of peppermint in history room. Report cards are given out. The usual smiles and frowns! The boys gave their ovations before the high school body. Well, Whose day is it? Ask Harriette. High School royally entertained by Dorothy Fishel. Contest postponed until April 9th. A nKiekzumogian is being eagerly fingered by each and every high school student. Junior and Senior boys debated on an agricultural problem. Preliminary declamatory and oratorieal contest held. First, sec- 0nd and third places went to Maude Frye, Harriette Anderson and Gail Campbell. Lecture giVen by Lieut. Parkhill. iSinking 0f Tuscania. Loml field meet. Juniors and Freshies vs. Seniors and Snphs. The party of the second won the honors. 'Twas a gala day! All students off to the eontest and field meet held at Gays Mills. In the declainatm'y contest Maude Frye received second place; in the oratnrical Curl Van XVintor, third and in the field meet Jack carried off individual honors. School is now called at 8:15; dismissed at 3:15. Five morning periods, three afternoon periods; then everyone for the Sunshine! The Seniors and many other students attended the La Farge class play. Off to Platteville to win laurels for V. H. S.! Maude Frye who got fourth in the declamatory contest; Virgil Hurless, second in half mile run; Jack Downer, third in 100 yard dash; and Miss Washburn Who accompanied them. Birthday surprise party in honor of Harriette Anderson. Banquet given by the Freshan girls of the domestic science de- partment t0 the teachers and members of the school board. A good time was enjoyed by all present. Junior and Senior banquet: toasts, new gowns, eteeyou know! ttOld Maidis Returnf given by members of church and high school girls. Marriage of Miss Ham and Mr. Kanable. The school extended its felicitations to them and its best wishes for their health, hap- piness and success. Now for a joyous summer. Vacation is 0n-4 School opened. All new teachers greet us with the exception of Miss Belinke. Each class elects its officers under supervision of its advisor with one or two exceptions. A consideration, is an essential of a contract; an advisor is like- wise an essential of a class meeting. The annual initiation of verdant Freshmen and frightened, if not fearless, teachers. l Literary officers elected were: President, Carl Van Winter; Vice President, Verne Hufford; Secretary and Treasurer, Miriam Dake. Verne Hufford elected yell master, but resigned in favor of Clifford Simmons. Our tiniest little fellow was chosen assistant yell master, Raymond Buchanan. Blue Monday for Guy. Some Sophomore girls were asked to remain after school. A poorly prepared lesson in domestic science has its tax. Uppermost question: uWill there be school tomorrow? Everyone off to the Big Viola Fair, either for pleasure 01' duty bent. Nutting picnic planned. Well, itwas an unpopular picnic. Dr. Harrington gave a talk on ttCare of the Teeth. Mr. Williams judged stock exhibit at La Farge. The presidential campaign is on; also a greater campaign. The tOWns reople are solicited, entreated, coaxed, etc. to buy a season ticket for the Lyceum Course. Viva Mathews cared not for rain 01' weather and won high honors as saleslady.
