Sr. Tail Back, Line Back LARRY LOYD, Sr. Tackle, Full Back RONALD GREMILLION, Sr. Guard STEVE JENNINGS. Sr. Tail Back, Quarterback JEFF KIBODEAUX, Soph. Quarterback In their seasons first game the Big Red Machine battled the Kinder eleven to a 0-0 tie. Larry Loyd and Billy Vallin led the Lions defense and the Dis- trict 5-AA champs found the going too rough. How- ever even with 206 yds. rushing the Lions could not get into the end zone for a score. Dudley Lejuhn plows through the blocking of the opposition to throw a frightened running back for a loss. 87 MENARD EDGES VINTON 12-0 JEFF ALLEN, Fresh. End RONALD ANDING, Jr. End DARRYL AUGUSTA, Jr. Center Vernon Bruiser Broussard rips through the big Menard defense for valuable yards. Raymond Granger (below) snares a pass to earn the Lions a first down. Kibodeaux, Taylor and Broussard gave a fine performance against the state ranked Menard team. The goal line jinx still bugged the Lions offense as they could not score. The Vinton stone wall de- fense kept the Alexandra team to only 12 points although they crossed the 20 on four more occa- sions. Head Coach Barbeau knew he was faced with a young team without experience, but with much determination. Steve Jennings (below left) plows over a tackier in the secondary. 88 LIONS MAUL TIGERS Jeff Brown shakes off one tackier and sprints for a large gain against Tigers. Johnny McClelland pulls down a Lake Arthur runner while Neal Bahnsen moves in to assist. The Tigers were crashed by the Lions efficient ground game coupled with a clever passing attack. Big Red amassed 262 yds. on the ground and an additional 43 in the air-ways. Dudley Lejuhn turned in a fine defensive per- formance with 12 individual tackles. Lejuhn paved the way for his all district nomination. Coach Barbeau was now smiling. NEAL BAHNSEN. Soph. End EDWARD BALONEY, Jr. Back MERLE BERWICK. Sr. Tk. 89 V.H.S. DOMINATES DEQUINCY JOHNNY McCELLAND, Sr. Wing Back Vernon Broussard claimed 94 of the 273 yds. rushing that the Lions rolled up against the Dequincy Tigers in their district opener. Billy Vallin made 11 individual tackles to lead our defense. The fired-up Tigers could not score on Vinton’s solid defense. Title hopes were still alive in Big Red's camp. BUDDY FERGUSON, Sr. Full Back Jeff Brown streaks the final 10 yds. for Vintons score against the Tigers. EDDIE DAILEY, Sr. Guard 90 CHAMPS TOPPLE LIONS 23-6 RAYMOND GRANGER, Sr. End, Quarterback The last year's Dist. champions handed the Lions a convincing defeat by running, passing, and using the option to perfection. Jeff Brown led the Lions offense with 70 yds. rushing. Vernon Broussard and Billy Ballin led the Red defense with 14 and 12 indi- vidual tackles. BILLY VALLIN, Sr. Fullback, defense line. 91 MARION SHOCKS LIONS 30-0 The Chargers who were the dark horses of 4-AA up-set the Lions to the tune of 30-0. It seemed to be a case of V.H.S. doing all the wrong things at the wrong time, and the Marion bunch putting it all together to shock the Vinton Lions. The tall Marion receivers had a field day with passes in which they completed 7 out of 10. A Marion running back is dumped behind the scrimmage line by Dudley Lejuhn almost on top of the Vinton bench, as Barbeau approves. DALE TRAHAN, Sr. Guard CHARLES STUTES, Sr. Guard, Linebacker MIKE THIBODEAUX, Jr. End 92 SAINTS SPOIL HOMECOMING Homecoming for V.H.S. was marred for the 1st time in 6 years as the St. Louis Saints raced past the Lions to the tune of 28-0. For six years Coach Barbeau had up-set the Saints for a victory. Now they had their turn. The Lake Charles eleven would go to the State Championship. But, they would remember the night they met Big Red. RANDY COURMIER, Soph. Tackle 93 PANTHERS AVENGE 73 LOSS GARY COPPLES, Fr. Quarterback, Tailback Last year’s State Champs avenged their only loss by de- feating our Lions 8-0 in a last minute score. A 28 yard aerial spelled doom to our Lions in the fading minutes of the game to let the Panthers nudge ahead with one touchdown. A hard fought contest marked by pen- alties and turn-overs dampened the Lions hopes. However, most of these Lions will be back. Raymond Granger, Vernon Broussard and Johnny McClelland break up a Boston pass play. DENIS FREDRICK, Soph. Center GREG GAUTHIER, Fr. G. LIONS DROP JACKELS 8-6 The Vinton defense piles up to stop the Iowa runner for no gain at the line. LeROI LEGER, Jr. End WILLIE SOUTHERN, Fr. Defensive Back BILL GAUTHREAUX, Soph. Tackle Steve Jennings led the Lions of- fense to edge the Yellow Jackets with a 8-6 score. Vernon Brous- sard ransacked his way over from the 3 yard line for the score. The P.A.T. was made by a fake kick by Jeff Kibodeaux but thrown to Jessie Menard for the game winning 2 points. Broussard and Billy Vallin led in defense. 95 BRONCS UPSET LIONS BRIAN LeMAIRE, Soph. Guard BRIAN MOORE. Jr. Wing Back On any given play the Lions could rip through for valuable yardage or a first down. Since 1967 the Broncos had waited for their revenge-, and they had it this night. For the years of humiliation Sam Houston gave it back by 30-0. This gave the Broncos their shot at the play-offs, the very thing that Vinton had de- prived them of for 6 years. However, with Sophomores in most positions the Lions knew they would be back again soon. Managers (on left): Cass McCaughy Pat McCelland Kenny Stinson Charles Bryant 96 VINTON’S ALL-DISTRICT JEFF BROWN, First Team Defensive Half Back DUDLEY LeJUHN, Second Team Offensive Tackle VERNON BROUSSARD, First Team Linebacker. Second Team Running Back. LARRY LOYD, First Team Defensive Tackle 97 BASKETBALL V.H.S. 1973-1974 For the second year in a row our Coach Maurice Muechke has led our Vinton Lions to a winning season. It was once an accepted belief that the Vinton Round Bailers were the doormat of the 4-AA District. Under Coach Mueschke's direction that myth was shattered with his last two winning seasons. Now the Lions have a big say so in who is District Champs of our 4-AA District. 98 MUESCHEKE’S MACHINE MOVES Eddie Dailey (left top) rips through for a lay-up. While Rudolph Bell shoots for a basket from the outside. Larry Loyd shoots from the outside for another 2 points for the Lions (on top right). The Lions proved deadly from all parts of the court to the dismay of our opponents. 99 WILLIE SOUTHERN CLIFTON TRAHAN M—M’S MACHINE ROMPS ON . . . JEFF BROWN 100 Coach Maurice Mueschke's charges continued to shock the district play with their aggressive play on the court. While other teams had to call their reserves, our Lions always managed to dominate the court with their aggressive and full court presses . . . conditioning and practice paid off for the Lions as they wore their opponents down on the court. RUDOLPH BELL . . . AND ON TOWARD DIST. MAJOR RAY JERRY GROGAN RICKY JOHNSON EDDIE DAILEY The Sportswriters and the local experts had discounted the Lions as winners. However, the M and M Machine had much different ideas on who would decide the 4-AA Championship. By mid-season it was understood that Vinton would be the spoilers and determine the district championship in basketball. 10) LIONS UPSET DIST. PLAY JAMES JACKSON BILLY VALLIN JEFF KIBODEAUX Seniors Billy Vallin, Larry Loyd and Eddie Dailey put the Lions up in front of the district in rebounds, and constantly scoring in the double digits to the dismay of our opponents. Concentration and concern is reflected on the faces of Big Red's bench as the clock runs out with Vinton easing ahead of a District leader. 102 . . .BIG GUNS FALL KENT JEFFERSON MATTHEW JOSEPH Clever and fast footwork is displayed as Big Larry Loyd moves the ball down court for another two points for the Lions. Rickey Johnson moves from the outside to make a pass to one of the Lions' big forwards which usually resulted in another suc- cessful lay-up for Vinton. 103 Coach Robert Lewis and four of his Seniors (Raymond Granger, Johnny McClelland, Vernon Broussard and Steve Jennings) look over last year's District Track Championship Trophy, and look forward to defending their title this year. For the past four years Coach Lewis's Lions have dominated the District and Regional Championships and snared the State Title 2 years straight. 106 V.H.S. How does one describe and recognize over forty-five years of dedi- cation ... work ... leadership. It would be impossible ... words can never fully describe or portray such a unique individual. This writer seriously doubts if our educational system shall ever experience such a person, or a school be privi- leged to have such a person dedicate themselves to the system and community in the near future. 149 ■ £ It's over - The four years that seemed an eternity are over. Happiness . . . relief . . . part of our life is past. A hard, trying part ... or was it? Fear . . . anxiety . . . insecurity; We must now face the unknown ... the future. After graduation, many of us will never meet again. Friends, who were so important in our life during school, will be swallowed into society or the system. We just can't imagine not seeing them every day. . . but it happens. After a while it won’t matter. We've changed - all during our school years. And we'll continue to change ... in our feelings about life, our goals, our desires; Things that are importantnow, won't be, and things that don't seem to matter at all now, will in the near future. Nothing is really lasting . . . todays dreams are laughed at tomorrow . . . We have to remember some things ... we couldn't live without memories. I hope this book holds as many good memories for you as it does forme. Working on the staff has been fantastic! There were bad times, but the good always outshine the bad - looking back. I'd sincerely like to thank the staff, the teachers, and Mr. Hanna, the principal, for all their help. But most tremendously - I want to thank Mr. Miller. He has inspired me in so many ways; And thus . . . this book. £ . i ►vV}' V X ' - - 151 ADVERTISERS THE STABLES WHERE COOKING IS AN ART The Graduates of Today Are the Men and Women of Tomorrow RESTAURANT AND CLUB WHERE DINING IS AN EXPERIENCE DALY'S RADIO AND T.V.
