State Champion Panthers found they could neither run, nor pass against Vinton's stone wall and agile defense in the secondary. Da- vid Le Blanc scurries with a Boston interception. Vinton Punishes Port Neches 39-14 Tim Leger, Field Marshall of the Lions races untouched behind the predatory accu- rate blocking of the Vinton offense. Ken Bertrand was elected to make hard short for needed first downs. GARY WILCOX (Jr.) Offensive End GLENN RAY (Jr.) Guard KENNY BROUSSARD (Sr.) Center Dogs Mauled by Lions 32-20 KENNY BERTRAND (Sr.) Tailback Vernon Broussard was an important part of the Lions defense which completely neutralized the pass. The Leger-Carlson option play was experimented with at will for expen- sive yardage against the Greyhound defense. Carlson rounds his ena for 37 big yards. Ken Bertrand, Vernon Broussard, Ken Taylor with Leger and Carlson took turns churning up great amounts of Welsh real estate. Barbeau’s Big Red Touchdown Machine was oiling itself to show 4-AA District it's fun to make touch- downs. Happiness is four wins in a row. BUDDY FERGUSON (Jr.) Wing Back LARRY LOYD (Jr.) Defensive Tackle Upset - DeQuincy Ties Vinton 0-0 The Big Red Touchdown Machine found above as Kenny Bertrand often found three and four Tigers on his back. going hard as illustrated ALTON KIBODEAUX (Sr.) Defensive guard. Vinton was riding a great eu- phoria after dumping State Cham- pion Panthers and three other Dis- trict contenders in a row. However now the Lions found themselves having to settle for a tie which threw the 4-AA race in a three way tizzy. DUKE COURM1ER(Fr.) Tackle DON MOORE (Fr.) Guard Eight times our stone wall defense held the Tigers inside our four yard line. St. Louis - 0 Lions - 0 Another Tie DAVID BOUDREAUX (So.) Defensive End Injuries, penalties, fumbles, and a late blocked punt all added up to another goose egg for state ranked Vinton. Big Red's stone wall defense was still keeping the opposition out of pay dirt, but our Red touchdown machine was malfunctioning. RANDY COURMIER (Fr.) Tackle Defense guard Glenn Ray received a painful leg injury that side lined the star for the last part of the contest. STEVE SMITH (Sr.) Def. Tackle and Kicker Now the 4- AA Dis- trict race was wide open. Tarps Upset Big Red 20-8 RICKEY GUILLORY (Sr.) Offensive Guard BILLY VALLIN (Jr.) Fullback MERLE BURWICK (Jr.) Offensive Tackle ROBERT SMITH (Sr.) Guard RICHARD KIBODEAUX (Sr.) End Despondent Dr. Carlson, team physician talks to injured son. Buddy who was Vinton’s most efficient running back. This loss made it apparent Vinton was out of the title picture for the 4-AArace. Penalties + Fumbles = Kinder Upset DENNIS FREDERICK (Fr.) Guard STERLYN SJMIEN (Jr.) Wing Back CRAIG MOONEY (Soph.) Guard Big Red’s Title hopes were diminished due to their past two ties. The Lions coasted lo a comfort- able 13-6 lead in the fourth quarter only to have the scrappy Yellowjackets take advantage of fum- bles, key penalties, long bomb passes and with 1:32 showing on the clock ease ahead of the Lions 18-13 in a contest that dimmed any hopes of Vinton entering district playoffs. Injuries Heal - Broncos Branded Vernon Broussard throws a key block to clear the way for Tim Leger to scamper for big yardage against the outclassed Broncos. A A FRANK BRYANT (Soph.) Quarterback RONNIE GREMILLION (Jr.) Guard JERRY GUILLORY (Soph.) Vinton’s Big Red Touchdown Machine took out it's flustrations of the past four weeks against the hapless Sam Houston eleven to the tune of 43 to 0. Now the Lions had it all together as Coach Bar- beau put it. Now it was apparent why Vinton was ranked 3rd in State standing early in the season. Big Red had overcome its injuries to be on the move again. Lions Mistreat Tigers 22-6 john McClelland (jr.) Wing Back RONNIE ANDING (Soph.) End MIKE THOMAS (Soph Tail Back (on right) David LeBlanc closes in on a Tiger running back to throw him for a loss. Homecoming night found the Lions being rude hosts to the Lake Arthur eleven on a cold rain soaked field. The Big Red Touchdown machine ran up a score of 22-6 and Coach Barbeau virtually emptied his bench to let all the re- serves perform before a packed stadium of cold fans. •) JESSIE MENARD (Soph.) End DAL MOREAU (Soph.) Center Iowa Falls 12-6 in Finale Out of the District 4-AA race the Lions were playing only for the prestige of winning, and winning was a second nature to Big Red who for the first time in four years missed a playoff berth due to injuries, and two ties. However the State Champs had tasted their only defeat at the claws of the Lions headed by Coach Barbeau, Mueschke, and Lewis the Lions mentors. All District Reflects ALTON KIBODEAUX, 1st Team Defense TACKLE The Vinton Lions snared seven positions with six players on this years 4-AA all District Team. This was indeed testimony to the Coaching ability of our fine staff and to the ability to the Vinton Lions. In comparison the State Champs who were from our district only managed to place seven players on the District team in eight positions. Larry Loyd and Glen Ray are both Juniors who will be back with the Lions next year and will un- doubtedly be part of next year’s success formula for Coach Barbeau's Touchdown Machine. TIM LEGER, 2nd Team Offense QUARTERBACK LARRY LOYD, 1st Team Defense TACKLE GLEN RAY, 1st Team Offense BUDDY CARLSON, 1st Team Defense GUARD 2nd Team Defense Line Backer HALFBACK Vinton Roster On almost every key block, every do or die tackle, every goal line defense, and all of the Lions touchdown drives found these players right in the midst of all the action. These six players certainly personified the spirit, and drive and never-quit attitude of the Vinton Lions. Every 4-AA Coaches clip board in the dis- trict had these players down for dangerous opponents who posed a threat all sixty minutes of a game. HEAD TRACK COACH, ROBERT LEWIS; Coach Lewis has led the Lions to District and Regional Championships fora record three years in a row. Vinton is the only AA school in our state to achieve this record. Vinton was the on- ly team to go undefeated in the season. A tired but very happy bunch of Lions pose in our gym after returning home with the 1972 State Championship. “STATE CHAMPIONS” 1972 Under Coach Lewis our Track team has broken all school records and the state, Regional, and District titles read like the team roster of V.H.S. ’s Track team. Coach Lewis has achieved the unbelievable five year record of 40 wins, 3 ties and only 6 losses. Our track teams have almost overflowed our trophy case in our school. Some of us will ride the train of education Some of us will ride the train of occupations And some of us will just keep riding ... f I Yesterday. As a freshman, I felt like a little wallflower in a world of sunshine that couldn't make me grow. Sophomore hours of study and Algebra made me almost begin to think 1 hated school. Being a junior. I wanted to change things to fit my own desires, but discovering it was me who needed to be changed. The new confidence I have as a senior, gave me the outlook on life that I feel I need to face what's coming . . . ahead. That was yesterday. All the different emotions had their own place but now after four years, insecurity creeps in and demands me to face the future and make the most important decisions of my life. Putting this book of memories together, helps me to appreciate all my years and experiences in this world at Vinton High and the world 1 seek tomorrow. As time separates us from Vinton High our only bond that remains, is that of the memory. Memories that were unhappy will diminish while the good ones will be treasured more.
