BUDDY CARLSON, Jr. Wing Back Ken Breaux gains valuable yardage with accurate blocking from Ted Walters, (above) The Lions opening game was a stunning up-set from the Boston ele- ven who staged a last quarter screen pass that was aided with a 15 yard penalty that put the Panthers in strik- ing distance. Vinton ground out 113 yards rush- ing to Boston's 56 to dominate the game but could not cross overtopay dirt for a score. 90 yards in total penalties kept the Lions out of the scoring bracket. Injures were a plague of the night for the Lions. Lions Massacre Indians 27-7 Gregg Fontenot drops his shoulder to slam a Pt. Neches runner for a loss as Vernon Broussard and Merle Berwick plow through blockers to aid. (above). STEVE SMITH, Jr. Tackle-Kicking Spec. A bewildered Vinton defense found itself three touchdowns behind in a free scoring first quarter before Barbeau’s big red touchdown machine found its scoring punch led by Mike Maggio's brilliant running and accu- rate throwing. Disbelief and shock are mirrored on the face of Head Coach Barbeau as un-ranked Welch takes advantage of Vinton mistakes to post a 20 to 0 score in opening minutes. Big Red quickly settled down to romp over Welsh 41-20. Now in the Lions 3rd game they were flexing their scoring muscles, (below) KENNETH BROUSSARD, Jr. MARK LeBlanc, Jr. Center. A hapless DeQuincy offense often found itself surrounded by Vinton's aggressive defense. Ted Walter and Buddy Carlson team up to take a pass out of a De- Quincy Back's hands. With the smell of play-offs in their nostrils Big Red was getting more formidable each game with a stingy defense and a greedy offense. The Red Machine was tuning up for a crack at District Championship. tender Saints — No Match for Lions 26-14 Mike Maggio scampers around the St. Louis end with his dangerous option play that was to gain him three touchdowns in Vinton's touchdown derby over arch-rival District contenders. Damian Mooney jumps high in the air in an attempt to snare a high pass. Mooney proved to be a two way threat. EDDIE DAILEY Soph. Tackle ROBERT SMITH Jr. Guard KENNETH TAYLOR Soph. Tackle Lateinthethirdquarter, Tail Back Ken Breaux is stopped on theCameron one foot line by a solid wall of Tarpon defenders. Big Red had dominated the running game all night leading in first downs and penetrations. The Tarpons could not substain a drive to penetrate Lion territory. A desperation field goal in the final four seconds gave a story book win to the hard fight- ing Tarpons The prescription tor a needed first down this night was Breaux's powerful knock play Breaux with his fast plunges kept the Vinton fans on their feet cheering. 90 Red Wants Back in Race — Kinder Falls 14-0- DAVID BAHNSEN Sr. Tackle DAVID LeBLANC Jr. Wing back DAMIEN MOONEY Sr. End TIM LEGER Jr. Quarterback GREG FONTENOT Sr. Linebacker Title hungry Lions galloped for two touchdowns in the second half to defeat the Kinder black-clads for the first time in 12 years. Field General Mike Maggio's favorite aerial targets were Damien Mooney and Buddy Carlson. After a first half see-saw battle of defense Vinton became the grid boss of the offense during the se- cond half with Kinder finding them- selves unable to score and the Big Red touchdown machine able to move almost at will. Coach Mueschke found himself put in the position of head coach with Coach Barbeau absent due to illness in the family. Broncos Tumble 30-6, Lions Wants Title Preston Richard, Roy Milton and Vernon Broussard team up to dump a Bronco runner for a 13 yard loss, (above) Buddy Carlson, Ken Breaux, Ken Bertrand andMikeMaggio all joined the fun in playing the touch- down game against a Sam Houston team that was rendered helpless by Big Red's scycle like blocking and bone crushing runs. Barbeau's touchdown machine reminded the Broncos it's safer to stay on their side of the river. Vinton was now in striking dis- tance of the State playoffs. ROBERT MEDUNA Jr. MIKE MARC ENT EL Jr. Tackle Guard 92 Mike Maggio shakes off a helpless Bronco would be tackier to scamper 24 yards to score standing up. PRESTON RICHARD Sr. Defensive End Red Touchdown Machine Punishes Tigers 41-0 Tim Leger Junior Quarterback scampers for a big gain around effective blocking, (above) Buddy Carlson leaps high in the air to snag a Maggio pass out of the hands of a hapless defender, (bottom right) JEFF BROWN, Fresh. Wingback Big Red treated hosts Lake Ar- thur rudely to the tune of a 41-0 stomping. Barbeau showed the dis- trict sportswriters what a real touchdown machine could do. The game quickly became an aerial Circus as Maggio repeatedly hit Walter and Mooney with hisbullet like passes. Beaux lugged the pig- skin for a total of 94 yards while pugnacious Gregg Fontenot broke up the Lake Arthur passing and running game by leading in tack- els and pass interceptions. Now Big Red was a step closer to State play-offs and did not want to stay home. Vinton DICKEY MONCEAUX, Jr. Fullback Humbles Jackets 35-6 ALTON KIBODEAUX, Jr. Guard FRANK BRYANT, Fresh. End BILLY VALLIN, Soph. Fullback The Big Red Machine was in a do or die position. In order to go to State play-offs a victory was needed. Mike Maggio alternated with running backs Breaux, Bertrand, Carlson, Monceaux, and passed at will to Walter, and Mooney to Am- mase 410 yards rushing to show dis- trict 4-A who was touchdown king. Barbeau seemed to toy with the completely outclassed Jackets. On most runs it took five or six de- fenders to stop bulldozer Breaux who often carried defenders on his back for a needed first down or a score. DAVID DOBBS, Sr. Guard 94 Panthers Edge Lions in Come Back Victory KEN BERTRAND, Jr. Flustration, dissappointment, and anguish show on the faces of the Vinton Lions as they realize their half-time lead of 15-6 is vanishing. For the 3rd year Big Red was denied the State Championship game by a team that we felt was not as good as Vinton. Tail Back. A blocked punt, an intercepted pass, and a saftey were the pieces put together in a jig-saw puzzle which saw Vinton dominate the game the first half only to loose it the last half with bad breaks, and miscues. The game had hardly started when speedster Mike Maggio raced 64 yards to show the North La. Panthers why he was a triple threat. Ken Breaux tore through the Bunkie defense at will the first half. Ken Breaux above) bulls his way to a first down. Buddy Carlson (right) snares a pass to put Vinton in striking distance of the goal line. Aetion . . . Speed . . . Muscle Reflect Six years ago Vinton was considered to be the door mat in District football competition. Five years ago Dale Barbeau and his staff of Maurice Mueschke, Robert Lewis took the Helm of Big Red. For the past three years in a row the Lions have gained a play-off berth. In his five years as head mentor Coach Barbeau and his staff has a record of 36 wins, seven losses, and 3 ties to put him as the leading coach in South Louisiana. Often our stands have many College scouts competing for room to view prospects for scholarships. 96 Success of Red Touchdown Machine A lightening offense, a tough, stingy de- fense, marked a successful season for the Vinton Lions. As foe after foe fell to the Red Machine the Lions became a household word in District 4-A. 97 Three Lions Win All-District Berth DAVID BAHNSEN - All District 1st Team Tackle 2nd Team Defensive Tackle, Full scholarship to Northwestern. SOAPE LLOYD BREAUX FATTY DUGAS 180 Morning and Evening Experiences Why does time go so fast? All that is left is re- flections of the past and many more reflections to come. Just think if we could stop time for only a second or go back in time to maybe our very first day of school or entering high school. Wouldn't every- one love to bring back the good times. After graduation we discovered school was much more than running through sunlit fields of daisy and clovers. It was fun, disappointments, but most of all work. We as Seniors were thinking man I finally made it or I wish I could go back. As editor I think I await the publication of this bock more than anyone besides my staff. I suppose it is because of all the long hours the yearbook staff has put into it. Without my staff and sponsor, Mr. W. Miller the publication of this book would not have been possible. They have proved to be one of the greatest group of workers that I have ever been associated with. It is great to know someone is there when you need them. To me, we were one big happy family, when it comes to this staff. As you look at the SOUVENIR I hope each and everyone of you is pleased with at least one little thing in the book. Also,we would like for this years SOUVENIR to be an example to future staffs to make their book as good as I think our is. MARIA HANKS 182 Autographs •« Hi. '•■nn.-i-H-t,,.
