the events of a great year. Its joys and its sor- rows have made it one of the greatest yet. SOUVENIR ’69 The year is 1968-69. The place is V.H.S. The feeling is one of expectation mixed with fear. Behind all the motion there is a strength which the whole school feels. We owe this to you, Mr. Hanna. You have brought improvements to our school and town which can never be We would like to take this op- portunity to say ‘Thank You.” You have made 1968-69 a year to re- member. 38iiE ttlfiii HlfiiF min Mir j PMUBtllW- 1 Table of Contents Faculty.................. 7 Classes................. 17 Sports...................51 Organizations............81 Features............... DO YOU REMEMBER ANY OF THESE? WE REALLY HAD SOME GREAT TIMES THIS YEAR. FOR MANY THIS WILL BE THE LAST. ONE DAY THIS BOOK WILL SERVE AS A REMINDER OF A GREAT YEAR AT V.H.S. The Lionettes wait with Queen Pat to walk the boys off the field at Homecoming. Do You Remember When . . . The spirit of Big Red! Arthur Murray did wonders for me. Oh No! My contact lens. VINTON VIEWS There once was a little boy who dreamed of being a basketball coach. Here's that little boy, grown up. Our own Coach Maurice Mueschke. He even teaches geometry! Mr. Ray Morgan, science and chemistry teacher, leads students through experiment. What would we do with- out you to add a little pleasure to our day? Miss Phyllis Benoit heads the Girl's Physical Education department. She is also sponsor of the Lionettes. Her shoulder serves all the girls whenever they have a problem. What would we do without her? 8 Faculty Mr. Walter Miller teaches the Seniors their most loved subject, American History. He even teaches a class of Civics. Mrs. Langley teaches English II and French. She even makes French interesting. Our band director, Mr. Croom, has really done a great job with the band. We're proud of you, Mr. Croom, as well as the band. Mrs. Preuett, the girls' friend and teacher of Home Economics. Teachers Can Be Nice! Mrs. Morgan certainly lives up to the title of a gracious hostess. Our English III and IV teacher, Mrs. Breed lec- tures on the right method of preparing a term paper. Because of her European travels she can even make English literature more bearable. Mrs. Long gives assistance to one of her typing students. She also teaches clerical practice and shorthand. Mrs. Mouton instructs one of her students in book- keeping. She also teaches English 111 and Typing. Tis Education Common Forms the Mind. Mrs. Dorothy Hanna is the director of our Mixed and Girl's Choruses. Mrs. Harris still has time to smile between her General Science and Biology classes. Mrs. Maude Ann Gilmore has the favorite class of the school, Freshmen. She teaches their favorite subject, English I. Mrs. Barbara Idleman is kept busy with her Algebra II, Senior Math and Business Math classes. Mr. Robert Finnigan is the man that takes care of problems. What did we ever do without him? As our counselor and sponsor of the Student Council he's kept pretty busy. Mr. Robert Papania teaches Speech I to many of our stu dents. He also teaches a course in Civics. of Opportunity Mrs. Haggard, our secretary, serves as the jack-of-all-trades. Students and teachers alike run to her when they're confused. As well as coaching our football team, Coach Dale Barbeau teaches Phys. Ed. Vinton really had a great season and we thank you for it. The V.H.S. He is known just as our bus driver, but he is also a faithful, ardent supporter who boasts our boy’s moral when they’re down. He doesn’t miss a football game, basketball game or a track meet, and if you look far enough behind the scenes, you will find it was Freddie who organized the caravan of cars to follow the football boys to the out-of-town games. He also made sure the spirit was up” by promoting town pep-rallies. There’s a lot more to Freddie than just being a bus driver. We’re just proud to know he’s from Vinton - He’s OUR Freddie Hanks. 64 Vinton Lions Roster VINTON 62 Merryville--------- - 60 61 Merryville----------65 67 St. Mary's----------56 40 Marion --- ---------71 46 Dequincy---------- 56 57 Sam Houston--------52 28 St. Mary's----------53 43 Landry--------------46 53 Sam Houston--------52 59 Merryville — - — 61 71 Sam Houston--------- 69 54 Iowa----------------74 56 Bell City-----------51 86 Starks..............64 61 Sam Houston--------70 57 Iowa----------------72 43 Landry--------------42 54 Marion--------------88 56 Kinder --- ---------55 45 Dequincy------------54 57 Welsh---------------79 77 Sam Houston--------66 69 Iowa----------------62 50 Landry--------------71 58 Marion--------------86 76 Kinder -------------58 65 L. to R.: FIRST ROW: Sam Maggio, Bill Walker, Greg Maggio. Sometimes, so bad, you’ll want to throw the book in someone’s face. It doesn’t matter who, the nearest human will do. But somehow you make it. All this time when you were pulling your hair out, feeling sorry for yourself you’d forgotten about that staff of yours. Whatever you dished out, they took it. If you asked them to stay up to midnight they didn’t complain. They’re the real pro’s. Yet you get all the credit. Well, future editor, take heart. If you have half the staff I had, you’ll make it. Somehow they’ll manage to put up with your tantrums. Hold on to that book. Make it one of the best V.H.S. will ever have. Once an Editor, TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY The World's Best Yearbooks Are Taylor-made
