Table of Contents FACULTY-...................... 11 CLASSES...................... 17 FEATURES.......................43 ELEMENTARY.....................67 ORGANIZATIONS..................75 SPORTS.........................97 ADVERTISEMENTS.................101 The old order changeth; yielding place to new ...” This year Vinton High School prepares to leave the memories and ac- complishments of the old school for the challenge .of the new. We of the Souvenir staff recall days gone by as well as the school events of the 1965-1966 year. We hope that each page will bring happy memories for every member of the Vinton High School com- munity. It is our sincere wish that this year's Souvenir will be meaningful as a chronical of the fleeting years of youth, and that as we move to new surroundings and new ideas, the joys of this year will long be remembered through the pages of the 1966 Souvenir. 3 Service to school and service to your country go hand in hand. The campus this quiet is a very rare sight. 4 5 Is it love? !!? Brrriiinnnnnggg! !’’ When the bell rings, it puts the school in action, the students, on the move. Mr. Newton teaches his civics class courtroom procedure through actual experience. Mr. Morgan helps two of his chem- istry students with their project for the high school science fair. 6 Junior high students welcome Stephanie Daigle with a gift and many exciting questions when she returned from Chicago, Illinois. There she showed her prize winning sheep. Homecoming cheerleaders, pep squad members, and our mascot wait patiently to run the football players on the field before the big game. Students watch films of Europe in Mrs. Idle- man's room. 7 In Memory SILAS R. LEGER JR. Oh! there at last, life's trials past. We’ll meet our loved once more, Whose feet have trod the path to God Not lost, but gone before. Principal’s Message My congratulaions to the Souvenir Staff of 1966 for the fine work you have done in compiling this, your school yearbook. The Souvenir is a treasure that you the students, alum- ni, and friends of Vinton High will cling to in the future as an everlasting memory. May your gladness from days gone by at V.H.S. always bring you joy and happiness and your future will match the brightest star in the heavens. My congratulations to the sponsors and the staff for a job well done. 9 Secretary Mrs. Haggart, the school secretary, works diligently to accomodate the schools needs. Runners-Up Second Runner-up Cindy Sandifer 46 Third Runner-up Marsha Courville 47 Third Runner-up Duane Domingue The members of the 1966 Souvenir staff decided that beauty was not the most important feature in the success of our school. We are, therefore, initiating a new honor to be added to the usual one of Most Handsome and Most Beau- tiful. The titles of Mr. and Miss V.H.S. were planned to honor the outstanding students vho h -vc contributed the most to the achieve 1. 48 The seniors chosen were first elected by popular vote of the student body, eliminated by the vote of the faculty. The three boys and three girls who received the most votes in the first student election and then the most from the faculty were voted on by the students to finally select the honorees. 49 Best Sport Most Popular Duane Domingue Marcia Mouton Most Intelligent Tim McCreary Melesia Moody Jeannie Sandifer Ronnie Courville 50 Most Courteous Charles Holden Sandra Sonier 52 She was presented a beautiful bouquet of red roses by last year's queen, Sandi Marshall 54 EILEEN LEGER Escorted by Mike Navarre LINDA PASSMORE Escorted by Richard Istre Senior Duchesses PAT LOFTUS Escorted by David Landry Junior 1 Maids JUDY HASHAW Escorted by Maxie LeBlanc RHONDA RICHARD Escorted by Lonnie Courville CHARLENE COPPELS Escorted by Ronnie Courville 56 CAROL ISTRE Escorted by Donald Courville MARLENE MORELAND Escorted by Teddy McNeil Sophomore, Freshman Royalty KAREN HOSCH Escorted by Sam Maggio CAROLYN WALTER Escorted by Roy Courville 57 DAVID LANDRY Lionette Sweetheart David Landry, chosen by the Lionette Marching Squad, reign- ed as Lionette Sweetheart for the 1965-66 school year. He was chosen on the basis of athletic leadership and personality. The big 230 pound bruiser played the tackle position on the VHS football team and served on the All-District second team this year. He lettered his eighth grade year and each year in high school, totaling five. In fact, David has played well enough to earn a scholarship with the Demons of Northwestern State. David a Senior, was also elected by the student body as Best Athlete. 58 Linda Passmore was elected by the 1965-66 Football Team to reign as Football Sweetheart. Linda is a Senior and has been with the Lionettes for four years and has been outstanding each year. She served as outstanding member last year and truly earned her title as Football Sweetheart this year. The title of president of the Lionettes doesn’t hold the true value of the effort and tremen- dously hard work that goes into it. As president, Linda did a magnificent job of leading the squad on Friday nights to awe the spectators with precision and finesse. Linda deserved this honor and has supported the team to the utmost. Her school spirit is illustrated by the work she has done as cheerleader, co- editor of the Souvenir, and president of the Senior class. Marcia is also a member of the Student Council and the Beta Club. As president of F. H. A. PAT LOFTUS exemplifies the per- fect future homemaker. Among her many activities are president of the Library Club and head cheerleader. Pat represented V. H.S. as Bi-Parish Fair Queen candi- date. Looking into the future is DOROTHY HADDOCK. Besides being a member of the Student Council and the mixed chorus she is vice-president of the Beta Club and secretary of F. B. L. A. Dorothy has also managed to maintain a high B aver- age. The voice heard on the loud speaker every morning leading the Pledge of Allegiance is that of TIM McCREA- RY. Tim serves as vice- president of the high school Student Council and is a member of the Beta Club and Art Club. on the Way Up Although she is a Junior, MERE- DITH ANDING serves her school well. The chorus would have quite a problem on its hands if Meredith was not around to play the piano. She is also secretary and treasurer of the high school Student Council. DENNIS LINSCOMB and MELESIA MOODY experiment in physics class. Both are honor roll stu- dents. Dennis is president of the Beta Club and a member of the Student Council. He also attended Pelican Boys State. Melesia devotes her spare time to the Beta and Art Clubs. She is also a member of the mixed quartet and attended the music rally. As president of the high school Student Council, LINDA PASS- MORE is often seen running off ballots for the many elections held during the year. Linda is also kept busy with her duties as president of the Lionettes, co-editor of the Souvenir, sec- retary of the Beta Club, and reporter of the Senior class. Somehow she still finds time to make the honor roll. 63 Seniors Class TOM PICKETT MARCIA MOUTON MARSHA COURVILLE RICKY ISTRE Juniors Favorites Sophomores KENNETH RICHARD GAIL COMEAUX Freshmen DEBORAH DUGAS TEDDY MgNEIL 65 DANNY LOFTUS STEPHANIE DAIGLE Mr. and Miss Junior High EDNADEEN BREAUX RICKY WATSON and Runners-Up Most Popular BRYAN LEBLANC CINDY UNSCOMB Mr. Miss Junior High were selected by the junior high faculty on the basis of scholarship, behavior, leadership, honor, extracurricular activities, and personality. C. Hickman-- Sponsor, Linda Passmore— Co- Editor, The Souvenir is a partial record of events and achievements at Vinton as kept by its students. The entire record could not be printed in 138 pages but is regarded as a segment of school activity. With the help of our sponsors we tried to improve VHS's yearbook with better pictures, interesting layouts and clever captions. Each member of the staff worked diligently all through the year by first selling ads then compiling the pictures and layouts. After setting up the pages, inking in all captions and completing last minute de- tails, the staff breathed a sigh of relief for they had completed the 1965-66 Souvenir. The annual staff wishes to express its appreciation to all who have cooperated to help make this a complete yearbook. As the halls grow dim and the classrooms quiet, we hope this book will bring back the memories of this year and hold this living school forever in your memory. 76 Some of the members of the staff are working hard to meet their final deadline. Their main objective, though, is the annual Barn Dance which they put on in February. There, the new F.F.A. Queen and F.H.A. King are crown- ed . They began with the odds against them that didn't slow them down. For the first time, our boys spent ten days at a football training camp near Alexandria. There, they built up their endurance and learned many of the fundamentals of the game. Later, they surprised many fans by coming out of the 4-A Jamboree in second place. The high spot of the season came when Vin- ton placed four players on the All-District 4-A teams. Lonnie Courville was chosen guard on the first team. He also qualified for the All- Southwest third team and Honorable Mention on the All-State team. District honors went to David Landry, Tom Pickett and Mike Navarre. 98 TOM PICKETT. The last shipment is off, so we can relax now and think about ev- erything that’s happened this past year. Remember the Christmas Formal and Homecoming? Remember the close basketball games that ended with everyone on their feet yelling? Re- member the crowded halls, the long classes, the tests, the teachers? Those are the things that maKe Vinton High School what it is, and nothing will ever change them. Next year, the student body will move to the new high school building. The setting and cast may change, but the plot will always be the same. The same spirit and enthusiasm that keep these old buildings going will follow and bring the new ones to life. But what of the memories left behind? That’s where the SOUVENIR comes in. We have tried to capture all of the activities and good times of this year and put them in this book for you, but that is impossible. The best we could do was to hit the high points, and even that couldn’t have been done without the cooperation of the faculty and the entire student body. There are no words to express our appreciation to all of the people who have helped us put out this yearbook. We can only present you our finished SOUVENIR and hope that it will serve to bring back many memories of the “old school.” With this goes our warmest thanks. 136 - ■ -
