HIS LIFE EXEMPLIFIED THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF EDUCATION Mr. Fontenot was always interested in the welfare of youth. He worked untiringly for excellent schools, churches, libraries, and recreation centers; also for a better community, better state, and better nation. It was in 1958 when Mr. Fontenot was manager that the Sabine Irrigation Co. spon- sored the sending of two of our outstanding Agriculture students to the National FFA Convention. Also that year the Sabine Irrigation Co. gave a watch not only to the out- standing graduate in the field of Vocational Agriculture but also to the outstanding graduate in the field of Home Economics. These honors have been continuously award- ed. Mr. Fontenot was not only instrumental but promotor and supporter of our Ameri- can Legion Home, Medical Clinic, branch health unit, and also branch parish library which was named in his memory, Fontenot Memorial Library. University of Southwest Louisiana designated Jimmy Fontenot as the Distinguished Alumnus in Agriculture in 1958. After his untimely death in May, 1962, he was awarded recognition by President Kennedy for devoted time in the Armed Services. The students and faculty of Vinton School considered Mr. Fontenot as a true friend and a staunch supporter of the Scholastic and athletic programs. The Souvenir Staff feels that one of James Whitcomb Riley's poems expresses their sentiments for the loss of this dedicated citizen. HE IS JUST AWAY I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead--he is just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land, And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. And you--0 you, who the wildest yearn For the old time step and glad re- turn Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here; Think of him still as the same, I say; He is not dead--he is just away! The Fontenot Memorial Branch Library was dedicated in memory of the late Jim- my L. Fontenot on January 27, 1963.
