Published by VINTON HIGH SCHOOL SOUVENIR STAFF SOUVENIR Vinton, Louisiana 1963 Editor: MARY MARGARET McCALL Business Manager: LOUETTA BREAUX Junior Editor: MARLA VALENTINE Adviser: MISS IRMA SPILLMON Assistant Advisor: MISS GLORIA CRANE CONTENTS MEMORIAL.....................4 FACULTY.....................11 SENIORS.....................15 FAVORITES...................19 JUNIORS.....................41 ATHLETICS...................45 SOPHOMORES..................59 ORGANIZATIONS...............63 FRESHMEN....................83 ACTIVITIES..................87 JUNIOR HIGH.................93 ELEMENTARY..................99 ADVERTISERS................107 FOREWORD The 1963 Souvenir Staff has chosen YOU, the students of V.H.S., as the medium through which to review the events of this memorable year. From the time you are a Freshman meeting new challenges to that day you are a Senior realizing your high school days are a blur in the past, the attention of the school and com- munity is focused on you. What is seen as you step into this spotlight of attention and concern? YOU—trying to look as though you were born with a slide rule in your hand, learning to type by touch and not by glance, rushing through crowded halls to equally divided classes, preparing footnotes for a research paper, and inhaling your food at lunchtime. With the passing of time and the ever-increasing tempo of our daily living, memories of V.H.S. may fade, leaving only scattered recollections of high school life. For this reason the Souvenir Staff hopes that your yearbook will be a tangible link between YOU of today and those inevitable vague memories. Mary Margaret McCall Editor IN MEMORY OF MR. JIMMY L. FONTENOT HIS LIFE EXEMPLIFIED THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF EDUCATION Mr. Fontenot was always interested in the welfare of youth. He worked untiringly for excellent schools, churches, libraries, and recreation centers; also for a better community, better state, and better nation. It was in 1958 when Mr. Fontenot was manager that the Sabine Irrigation Co. spon- sored the sending of two of our outstanding Agriculture students to the National FFA Convention. Also that year the Sabine Irrigation Co. gave a watch not only to the out- standing graduate in the field of Vocational Agriculture but also to the outstanding graduate in the field of Home Economics. These honors have been continuously award- ed. Mr. Fontenot was not only instrumental but promotor and supporter of our Ameri- can Legion Home, Medical Clinic, branch health unit, and also branch parish library which was named in his memory, Fontenot Memorial Library. University of Southwest Louisiana designated Jimmy Fontenot as the Distinguished Alumnus in Agriculture in 1958. After his untimely death in May, 1962, he was awarded recognition by President Kennedy for devoted time in the Armed Services. The students and faculty of Vinton School considered Mr. Fontenot as a true friend and a staunch supporter of the Scholastic and athletic programs. The Souvenir Staff feels that one of James Whitcomb Riley's poems expresses their sentiments for the loss of this dedicated citizen. HE IS JUST AWAY I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead--he is just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land, And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. And you--0 you, who the wildest yearn For the old time step and glad re- turn Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here; Think of him still as the same, I say; He is not dead--he is just away! The Fontenot Memorial Branch Library was dedicated in memory of the late Jim- my L. Fontenot on January 27, 1963. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE In this, the 1963 volume of THE SOUVENIR, you have compiled and presented to the Faculty, Students, Alumni and friends of Vinton High School a treasure that is close to our hearts. The faculty is sincerely hopeful that this volume may serve to verify the experiences which we all cherish so great at V. H. S. The Student Council's main objective this year was to raise the standards of student courtesy. In the many activities the Student Council sponsors a bulletin board which encourages school spirit in the high school building and a Good Grooming Day held every other Wednesday. Phillip McMahon, Wayne Coward, Johnny Brous- sard, and Herman Granger were selected by popular vote of the club members to represent the Vinton FFA Chapter. The four day trip for the boys was sponsored by the Sabine Irrigation Co. and the Vin- ton Co-op. The meetings for the convention were held in the Kansas City Municpal Auditorium. Those attend- ing the convention were taken on tours of such sites as the Chevrolet assembly plant and the U. S. Steel Foundry. The Vinton delegates were privileged to ex- change their viewpoints on agricultural matters with former President of the United States, Mr. Harry S. Truman. Safety is highly emphasized in the F. F. A. department. Carlton Cooley and Jimmy Dugas saw the wood used for building a Farm Safety sign. Boys are taught many skills through F. F. A. at Venton High School. D. J. Former Elementary. Junior High, and High School Choruses, dating back to 1956, have helped earn money for these robes. Each year a music festival and rally is held at McNeese State College in Lake Charles. In 1957, for the first time, Vinton entered the music rally and won first place. Throughout the years of 1958, 1959, and 1960 the Chorus brought home first place trophies. In 1961 they tied with Iowa in Class B, and in 1962 tied with Hornbeck for first place. Quartets, trios, and soloists brought back the first place honors and trophy in Class B competition this year. MIXED QUARTET: Bobby Kimball, Mary Breaux, Anita Aldrege, and Buddy Perkins. GIRL'S TRIO: Elizabeth Landry, Carolyn BOY'S QUARTET: David Landry, Bobby Morgan, and Gail White. Kimball, Barry Nicks, and Jerry Courmier. VINTON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS PELICAN STATE A high point in every junior's year is the selection by his classmates of the delegates to Pelican Girl's and Boy's State. These students are selected on the basic requirements of initiative, leadership abilities, personality, and scholarship. They are sponsored by the American Legion. During the ten days living on the L. S.U. Campus, the students learn the funda- mentals of the local, parish, and state governments by actually taking a part in the functions of each. They become familiar with each government official and his duties by building the mythical fifty-first state of Pelican. After having gained this knowledge the Pelican Girl and Boy Staters return home to appre- ciate and take part in civic affairs. DELEGATES: Joe Williams, Mary McCall, Grady Landry. LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Leadership Conference is a workshop held for the purpose of building leaders in our schools. This train- ing program, lasting a week, is held on the L.S.U. Campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A student is se- lected to attend Leadership by popular vote of the Junior Class. You are given the choice of four cate- gories in which to enroll. Students may undertake training in yearbook, newspaper, public speaking and recreation.
