FOREWORD The modern theme of our 1953 Souvenir expresses our hopes, that as we go out into this great world we may look back in our book of memories to notice the changing of time. It is the hope of the 1958 Souvenir Staff that the faces in our book will remain dear to our hearts with hopes to meet again. THE SOUVENIR STAFF DEDICATION The 1958 Annual staff proudly dedicates the new edition of the Souvenir to Ted Lyons, one of Vinton High's best known former students. Mr. Lyons was graduated from Vinton High in 1918. He has always been an athlete. However, baseball has been his favorite. Mr. Lyons' baseball honors have been numer- ous. In 1956 he was elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame. On May 24, 1928, Ted pitched a 21 inning game. Three years earlier, on August 21, 1926, Ted threw a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox. In his active playing career, Mr. Lyons played 21 seasons with the Chicago White Sox. His record with the White Sox was 260 victories against 230 losses. In 1925 and '27 he tied for the most wins in the American League. He held the best-earned run average in 1942 with a 2.10 aver- age. Among his other activities have been active duty with the U. S. Marine Corps, manager of the Chicago White Sox, coach for the Detroit Tigers and coach for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Presently, Mr. Lyons is a scout for the Chicago White Sox in the Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma area. DR. A. H. FOREMAN With many pleasant memories the students of Vinton High pause to honor Dr. A. H. Foreman. Dr. Foreman was a Vinton physician for 47 years. Dr. Foreman, a native of New Orleans, was graduated from Tulane Medi- cal School in 1898. He held membership in numerous college and professional organizations. Some of which are a charter member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at Tulane, The American Medical Association and the Seventh Dis- trict Medical Society. Dr. Foreman was past President of the Seventh District Medical Association. H. A. NORTON PARISH lUPIRINTINOINT Vinton Scfioot W. A. HANNA, Principal Vinton, Jlouiiiana J. L. BREAUX SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER WARD 7 It is a real pleasure for a high school principal to work with a group of students who have labored in order to give to the students, faculty and citizens of Vinton a wonder- ful Memoir of the school activities for 1957-58. Your Annual staff has issued a challenge to each of you students that you might meet the goal in life that is expected: as, they have met our expectation in giving us this edition of the Souvenir. In behalf of the Faculty and student body, I wish to thank the Editor, staff and sponsor for a job well done. W. A. Hanna FACULTY First row: Mr. W. A. Hanna, Mrs. Marshall, Mr. Blackmon, Mr. Burnham. The fancy ball handling and passing of quarterback, Jimmy Wilfer, combined with the pass catching of Ronnie Racca, could not overcome the six point lead of the Jennings' Bulldogs. VINTON TAPS ST. MICHEAL of CROWLEY September 6 Halfback, Donald Lormand, ripped over from the one yard line late in the third quarter to score VHS's only touchdown as the Lions nosed out St. Michael's 7-0 score in a non-conference football engagement. VINTON NIPS IOWA 7-0 September 13 Thrown back on two serious earlier threats, Vinton's Lion finally managed to score a T.D. in the last 90 seconds for a 7-0 victory over the Iowa Yellow Jackets. The game's only T. D. was scored on an eight yard pass from J. T. Richard to end Ronnie Racca. With a minute and a half remaining, Richard converted for an extra point. The ball was held by Ralph Kimball. Vinton marched 51 yards for their touchdown late in the first quarter, with Billy Jardell scoring from the one yard line and J. T. Richard booting the extra point. In the first part of the last quarter, the Tigers slipped past the Lions to go all the way for a touchdown; and later on in the last part of that quarter the Tigers scored again. Vinton gained a 7-6 edge midway through the second quarter on a 41 yard march set up by J. T. Richard’s 29 yard punt return. Richard scored from the one yard line. The Lions made it 14-6 with a 51 yard drive early in the second half with Bull Jardell getting the 2 yards off left tackle. The Lions marched 60 yards for their final T. Touchdowns were scored by Duck” Lormand and Bull Jardell. J. T. Richard booted the game's winning point. TIGERS UPSET V.H.S. HOMECOMING November 8 With odds against them the Lions took the field, ready for their battle with the DeQuincy Tigers. The Tigers had a hard time breaking through the solid wall set up by the strong Lions. But finally their break came in the last few minutes and ended the game 6-0, to upset the Homecoming. LIONS FALL TO OAKDALE 27-13 November 15 The first half was ended with the score Oakdale 20, Vinton 0.
