Highly decorated automobiles and Hoats were the order of the day-artistically decorated and too numerous to mention in this short article. Civic organizations, bands, fire departments and military companies all brought dignity to the long line as it passed through streets lined with spectators. Then to the new William Byrd High School for the laying of the corner stone. This beautiful ceremony was in charge of the Nlasonic Lodge of Vinton. The speaker of the day was our congressman, Clifton A. Woodrum. Nlany other notable officials of both Roanoke and Vinton delivered addresses during the course of the ceremony. In the granite block that became the corner stone were placed the following: A copy of the Roanoke Timer of November 5th, a list of oflicials of the Town of Vinton, a program of the Home-Coming, a list of the members of the Roanoke County School Board, as well as lists of the members of the Vinton Lions Club, Nlasonic Lodge, and all the pupils of Vinton High School, along with members of the faculty and football team. A coin commemorating the two hundredth anni- versary ofthe birth of George Wfashington was also included. Then to Leggett Field where Coach Ahalt's Terriers engaged Radford High in a great game of football. Berry, the stalwart left guard of Vinton, came through with a great performance of tackling to take the honors for Vinton. For Radford, Painter, playing at fullback, displayed clever defensive work for his team. After the smoke of battle had cleared away the Vinton warriors marched oil' the field victorious by the score of 6 to o. - The horne-coming celebration, as a whole-parade, corner-stone laying, and football game-combined to make a day of real enjoyment and sport and will linger long in our memories, even unto the day that stalwart athletes of the new VVilliam Byrd High School go forth to do battle with worthy foes. - Q24 55 124- ,
