It was not difiicult to deduce the fact that they were Freshmen, but upon second observation one knew there was something different about this class. Wliat was it? Oh-of course I-there was an almost intelligent look about them, a most unusual characteristic of Freshmen! The class proved to be quite interested in school work and did not seem to Hnd time for very many extra curricular activities. l.xlI211'g2ll'Ct Thomason, Eugene Alley and Winifred llflarshall were chosen as leaders of the class. ln our second year of high school, we were placed under the supervision of Nlrs. Meado1'. By this time our number had been decreased to eighty-four. This year Omega Poff, Duane Berry, Blondelle Foutz and James Stanley were elected officers of our class. September, 1931, found the Class of 1933 registering as Juniors. Duane Berry, VVinifred Ma1'sl1all, llflary Wllite lVIcCue and Ruthella Gearing were chosen to represent the class as ofiicers. ln November the Junior Play, Cinderella O'Reilly, was presented. For its great success we were indebted to lllrs. MCHdO1', our faculty advisor. Finally came the affair of the year, the Junior-Senior Banquet. This was a gala event, from which the Seniors departed with happy memories and a good will feeling for all Juniors. Now-the year of years has arrived. Seniors-at last! But that feeling of superiority and dignity which used to be prevalent has deserted us. lVIrs. Nloseley, our class sponsor, has in many ways helped us to uphold the standards of Seniors. Having proved to be such a capable leader, Duane Berry was unanimously proclaimed President of the Class of 1933. He wasf ably assisted by Orpha Cunningham, Pauline lVIcGeorge and Kyle Short. The Ghost Chaser was presented in lVIarch under the excellent direction of lVIrs. Nloseley and was acknowledged to be a great achievement. Now, with graduation before us, we are unable to describe our emotions. Is this feeling one of sorrow or of gladness? Sorrow when we think of parting, and gladness when we think how we have worked to make the name of the Class of 1933 an honored one. WVe sincerely hope we have accomplished that end. eil 22 lie ez2se2 z:z2 efsfs 1s::e:1:s:e:a1: :se2: ::::2 a 2:21f-1 1 1-'-2 '-1f:s2 .qzgi ' XIX 1-:-: '-A:::ffl1A - ' 2 2 25 geil Esi'?,i4iiifi?1i5Eis5 1'111':1f2s zge 'iififfilf i51f':fl5f iiiiafififiifi M Senior Class Poem PON life's sea our ships we east, dna' tossed about are we. Coach Nap Ahalt had nine letter men and a group of promising reserves with which to start the football season. The Terriers won the first six contests of the season, in which they held their opponents scoreless and, at the same time, managed to add up a total of one hundred and forty-seven points for themselves. The team journeyed to Charlottesville November Ilth, where they suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the strong Charlottesville Hi team by a SCO1'C of I9-O. A post-season game was played between the Terriers and the strong Jefferson Hi team, in which the Terriers were defeated by a score of 31-O. Due to the excellent coaching of Coach Ahalt and Assistant lVIcCue, football for 1932 was a great success. The enthusiasm shown by an exceedingly large squad and the whole-hearted support of the student body show the real spirit of Vinton High. SCHEDULE September 24th .......... The Terriers coastcd smoothly through their basket ball season winning seven out of eight conference games. The only conference game lost was to Rocky Mount. Out of the twenty-five games played, the Terriers accounted for nineteen victories while they lost only six games. The Junior Varsity, under the coaching of Keith Morgan, showed up well. Highly decorated automobiles and Hoats were the order of the day-artistically decorated and too numerous to mention in this short article. Then to the new William Byrd High School for the laying of the corner stone. This beautiful ceremony was in charge of the Nlasonic Lodge of Vinton. The speaker of the day was our congressman, Clifton A. Woodrum. Nlany other notable officials of both Roanoke and Vinton delivered addresses during the course of the ceremony. In the granite block that became the corner stone were placed the following: A copy of the Roanoke Timer of November 5th, a list of oflicials of the Town of Vinton, a program of the Home-Coming, a list of the members of the Roanoke County School Board, as well as lists of the members of the Vinton Lions Club, Nlasonic Lodge, and all the pupils of Vinton High School, along with members of the faculty and football team. A coin commemorating the two hundredth anni- versary ofthe birth of George Wfashington was also included. Then to Leggett Field where Coach Ahalt's Terriers engaged Radford High in a great game of football. Berry, the stalwart left guard of Vinton, came through with a great performance of tackling to take the honors for Vinton. For Radford, Painter, playing at fullback, displayed clever defensive work for his team. After the smoke of battle had cleared away the Vinton warriors marched oil' the field victorious by the score of 6 to o. - The horne-coming celebration, as a whole-parade, corner-stone laying, and football game-combined to make a day of real enjoyment and sport and will linger long in our memories, even unto the day that stalwart athletes of the new VVilliam Byrd High School go forth to do battle with worthy foes. - Q24 55 124- , 'V fb ff 04,49 1 , EK W, 33 ,U ML f .
