Villiflll. Im X Foreword To present a complete record of the school year at Lincoln High is beyond the scope of the Arrow. We decided that to make the year more vivid to you at present and in years to come, We would catch events as they happened. As you glance through this brief pictorial diary, may many pleasant memories of the numerous events, all of which this book is incapable of holding, be recalled to your minds-the greatest storehouses of the world. We wanted to make our yearbook seem a tangible living thing, poignant with memories for each of you. We not only wish to present obvious memories but also recall associated events. In years to come if this book seems to be a dear friend, seems to be something really tangible and joy- ful, we, the staff, will certainly feel well rewarded. Thanks A illionwv In lluw-fi. Nt. Don Thompson, Fullback Don. a Senior who won his seeond letter, played good foothall through most of the season. Don shared in the running, passing, and kielking duties as well as haeking up the line on defense. Don hit hard on line plunges and was plaeed on the All-t'onl'erenee seeond team. lle will probably he missed when next year's season rolls around. Glenn Davis, Halfback Jiggs might have been small but don't let his size fool you. lle was very fast. and onee he got into the open field he was hard to bring down. Even though he was small his hard taekles ,iarred many opposing baeks. Jiggs, a Senior who won his first letter this year, will nevertheless be missed next year as he is the type that is always niee to have around. Hollis Henkle, Tackle Hllollyi' is a Senior who won his first letter this year and in doing so he made a, good aeeount of himself. Holly liked it best when the going was the toughest. and was always willing to piteh in. Holly was noted for his good disposition and is the kind a fellow that you like to have on your team. Bob Wilson, Center liob is another Senior who won his first letter this year, but he beeame an outstanding lineman. A fine defensive as well as offensive eenter, lioh worlked hard at his position and never looked for speeial reeognitiou. llis teammates, however, know that Hob deserves a lot of credit for his outstand- ing work this year. John Fowler, Halfback Johnny, a Junior letter winner. eontributed a lot to this year's team. lle was well known for his speedy and somewhat speetaeular reverses and he also did most of the signal ealling, Johnny is the type that plays smart. heads- up l'ootball all the time and will be expeeted to do much next year. Frank King, Guard Frankie is one of these short, stoeky, young fellows who are fast on their feet. Frank handled his position well and not only was he a good bloeker on offensive but he was also a good defensive man. Frankie was usually at the right plaee at the right time to do the most good. This Junior will do mueh to holster next year's line. Jack Mozena, End Jaek is another Junior who played a lot of football for us this year. Jaek showed a fighting spirit that earned him a plaee on the first team. Jaefk al- ways got down fast under punts and frequently nailed opposing backs in their traeks. lle will be eounted on to eome through next year. Andrew Pettit, End Andy is a Junior who won his first letter in football. This Junior played lots of good football this year and should make a fine wing man for next year's team. Andy improved greatly as the season progressed and made fre- quent ealls in opponents baekfields. Raimond Struble, Quarterback Ray. a Sophomore letter winner, is a smart hall player with lots of poise. Ray developed into a good bloeker this year and when there was a job to be done llay was always there to get it done. We ean all feel sure that Ray will do big things in the next two years. Good luek. Ray! Gordon Kunz, Tackle VVindy, a lfreshman. mind you, was the big boy of this year's squad and is as good a sport as you will find anywhere. You eould always find Vl'indy where the going was toughest. Wiiicly handled his assignments well and is a boy who will mind watehing around V. ll. S. the next few years. Scores Hit in '41 Student Council Elects Are Historical Dates for V. H. S. Publication ln l'1llllllli1L'.flll,l-'I throuxzh the dusty Arrows stacked in Mr. l4Itka's office we found some in- teresting: bits of history about VllS's publications. The grandfather t that we foundl ot' the Arrows was edited in 1915. At that time the Arrow was published five times a year and printed at the Times Office. In H420 up to the present time they have been coming out as the year book, The first Vinton High School newspaper was published under the name of The t'hronicle. Var- ious names have been used since that time but for the past nine years the name of Purple and Gold has been used. This year Your Periodical Companion has had more to offer to its readers than just the latest scoops around school. It was es- pecially active in introducing the Freshmen to the high lights of high school life. For the rest of the V. H. S. fun-makers, they ori- ginated W. P. A. tWomen Pay Allt Week. In addition to these lively activities, the staff was host 'to all jive-crazed rugcutters at a dance. Credit also goes to the staff for their initiative in being among the first to present an assembly program. As another one of its commendable qualities, hon- orable mention is given to the spirit they inspired in the various activities through its encouraging editorials. P. 81 G. Editor and Assistants for Next Year The Purple and Gold editor and her two assistant editors for 1942 are: Dorthy Thompson, editor: Faye Gaddy, Junior class assist- ant: and KaDel Urice, Sophomore class assistant. The Student Council elected Dorthy. Faye and Kallel on the value of their work, cooperative- ness and other merits that deter- mine a good reporter. During the next year the Stu- dent Council will elect a Sopho- more assistant editor as Faye and KaDel are moved up to Editor and Junior class assistant respec- tively, providing that their work has been such as to merit this promotion. VELKA MM X bs X K. , , v :: A X - xg, NAXIICB YOQI This is dedicated to all of those Who pass through the halls and classrooms of Lincoln High School. i There is no monument that can be erected to the memory of a man equal to that monument which he has built for himself during his lifetime. A block of stone no matter how great is insignifi- cant indeed beside the effect of the im- pressions created upon people about it. Deeds live and their impact upon sensi- tive beings leave an impression of in- discernible proportion. Markers exist merely to indicate that at some past time a living personality existed making his impressions either good or bad upon those about him. Therefore, if I had the power to determine what boys and girls should gain from our high school I would list first of all a sound character built upon the teachings of Christ and dedi- cated to the highest ideals of mankind. Ivan Phillis was a standout in setting a new class B pole vault record by clearing the bar at II ft. 55541 inches. Gale Wienands placed third in the pole vault, Kenny Duncan placed in the half mile, Andy Pettit placed in the 440 yard dash and the high jump. Don Thompson placed third in the shot put to complete the Vinton scoring, Vinton 75-'l'l'acr 33 Vinton's track team swept past Traer by win- ning a majority of first places. Performing on their own track they scored heavily in the field events and more than took care of themselves on the track. Don Thompson and Gale Wienands were Vinton's leading scorers. lklcchanicsville Relays Close to twenty schools competed in the an- nual Mechanicsville relays and we placed 5th in the final standings. Don Thompson scored firsts in the javelin and shot, put. and third in the discus. Gale Wienands tied for third in the pole vault and placed second in the broad jump. Cedar Falls Relays Vinton's track team journeyed to Cedar Falls to compete in the annual T. C. Relays and man- ged to make a favorable showing. Our 440 relay team placed third, Raimond Struble tied for 4th in the pole vault, and Don Thompson placed Ilrd in the javelin throw. l't-dar Falls Dual Cedar Falls High invaded Vinton and won a victory over us in a dual meet. The visitors man- aged to score in almost every event and won more than their share of firsts. The meet, how- ever. was close all the way. A new V. ll. Scoring firsts in the t'ield events and placing in the running events, the home team gathered enough points for victory. Fowler, Wienands, and Thompson led the scorers. A new V. H. S. javelin record was set, by Thomp- son who tossed the spear 169 feet ti inches. 'l'ri-Valley t'ont'crencc Vinton placed third behind Wilson of C. R. and Cedar Falls in a meet held at the Teachers Col- lege track in Cedar Falls. Vinton made a surpris- ing accomplishment in placing first, in all the field events but conldn't manage to score much on the track. Fowler. Wienands. Struble. and Thompson were heavy scorers for Vinton. Vinton 4055-l'. High tlflwul Vifyl 8032 U. lligh brought a well balanced squad of run- ners to Vinton and humbled the home team in il dual meet. While Vinton won firsts in all the field events, Il. High won firsts in all the running events to more than balance the score. Vinton's usual quartet ot' scorers again made the majority of our points. Where Was I? lst Row-I. Parry, R. Struhln-, l. l'hillIn, I7. Thompson, 0. 'l'uylnr. G. VVIQ-nnmha. K. Duncan, D. S1-lken. A.
